I stayed in this hostel in July 2004. From the train station it took me a little less than half an hour to get there with my backpack. The old lady at the reception was rather unfriendly and seemed a little confused. Then, the bed was rather nasty, because the blanket smelled probably due to a awful washing powder. The hostel is very clean, offers very much facilities, but it has a lack of atmosphere.

Good Option for Aberdeen's only youth hostel

My flatmate and I took a two day trip up to Aberdeen and found this hostel to be a great value. Our rooms were cold at first, but I turned up the heater and they were boiling by the middle of the night with the heater on full blast. The staff was friendly and helpful, as were many of the Aberdonians themselves. The hostel is right on the 14/15 bus routes and could be pretty easily walked to as well. The rooms have two bunk beds and there are female and male floors and also rooms for families. There weren't any bedbugs as reported by a previous reviewer and the rooms were clean-- the lighting could be improved however. The bathrooms were also clean and the kitchen area was very spacious with plenty of room for those cooking their own meals. A TV room and book swap are also provided within the hostel and internet is available. If you are not a Scotland youth hostel association member it will cost you an extra pound, and sheets are included but it is another pound for towel hire. It was well worth the money and the cheapest option in Aberdeen. This hostel was also give three stars by the scotland board of tourism, with other, more expensive hotels in the area receiving less. Good value for your money and I would stay there again in a heartbeat. For those partiers out there, there is a 2 am curfew, but I don't think that would really be much of a problem in Aberdeen, unless you wanted to stay out at the pub all night.

I stayed twice in May-June. It's very comfortable, excellent kitchen, good dining room but a little dark. The TV room was sterile with the TV always on, but it had books to exchange. Showers and dorms were very good. Unlike the last reviewer, I found the corridors were over-heated. Internet is very expensive. The staff were helpful, but refused to keep a small bag for me for 2 weeks while I went abroad and returned.

bed bugs!

i am 99% sure i was bitten by bed bugs at this hostel, so watch out!! apart from this unfortunate incident, we thought this place was pretty good. our room was spacious but our heater didn't work (we were there in the middle of winter) so luckily i was able to grab another doona to use. the only part which was warm was the reception area and stairwell (not very helpful). no breakfast is provided but the self-catering kitchen and dining room are huge (though cold). there's also a separate room for the smokers and yet another big room with a tv and magazines. the laundry is great (1 pound each for a wash and a dry i think) and includes washing powder, a sink and an effective drying room. the staff were very helpful and understanding when we had to check out very early. the hostel is a 15 minute walk to the city centre (perhaps longer with a heavy backpack on). there are a couple of city buses which stop right outside the hostel. the showers are average but most importantly hot, and overall the hostel is clean (apart from the bed bugs of course).
