Humid basemed-room with beton-wall-view

This was the second-worst stay during our trip through scandinavia. We took a private twin-room with own facilities for two nights. The only plus were the own facilities and the cleanliness of the room and the facilities and the view during the drive to the hostel. But we got a basement-room with a wall with an an arm-lenght distance in front of our window. If we wanted to see the sky we had to ly nearly on the floor and look straigth up to catch a small view. In the second night we did not need to try to catch a view at all, because it started raining and "luckliy" the gutter ended next to our window and we could hear the rain dripping very loudly so we had to close the window, which is in this room not the best idea, because then you get this nice tropical rain-forest feeling inside. You have it even with the window open, but this is worse. During the complete stay I could not get my usually fast-drying-travel towel dry, so it startet slightly to smell like the shower curtain already was. The complete building has this extreme youth-hostel feeling. And although the staff sometimes friendly (and sometimes not at all), it took them 15 minutes just to check us in, which usually took no longer than 5. We really did not enjoy this stay. Maybe if you get a room not in the basement it is better. It is a clean hostel and all the other comments of the reviews (like only a few backpackers, spar next to the hostel etc.) apply, but I definitly will not stay there again. I don´t think this room was a good value and I really like dry towels :-)

Not very attractive, but nice view and good facilities

We stayed here for 3 nights in July 2004. We didn't find the hostel very attractive (see earlier comments on 'institutional' feel), but it had everything we needed, the lounge areas are quite nice and the staff were really friendly and helpful. It is located out of the city centre, but the bus ride is quick and worth it for the view and peace (if you're after a break from crowds - not that crowds are a big problem in Norway!). You can buy chocolate etc and pizza in the hostel and the SPAR down the road is well-stocked. On the down side, it's NOK 25 for the washing machine and NOK 5 for the hotplates in the kitchen (it all adds up when you're on a budget... if you're there in summer have a picnic instead!). There didn't seem to be many showers (not that I had to wait long). I wasn't hugely impressed with the breakfast after a much nicer spread at the Oslo YHA (Haraldsheim). But I would definitely recommend this hostel for a stay in Bergen. Just out of interest, we seemed to be some of the few 'backpackers' staying there - coachloads of older/retired tourists kept arriving! I guess if you can't afford the prices in town it's a good alternative!

This is a lovely hostel, with fantanstic rooms and facilties, and the view is amazing!! We stayed in a twin room with ensuite, which was spotless. No faults at all with room, and the breakfast was spot on. Staff were very helpful, especially over confusion with the stove. The kitchen was quite small and you sometimes have to wait to cook, but the atmosphere is great, with plenty of people to chat to. Shop just down road. It is a bus ride out of town, but the buses are frequent and not a problem to get, though make sure you get the bus from the correct street (ask at info centre if unsure) The quiet surroundings and areas to walk are great and there is nothing nicer than the view across Bergen at night.

A large, okay hostel, but it's long way off.

A large, institutional HI hostel, complete with the English school groups, elderly couples, and families with bickering kids. Some large TV lounges with spectacular views of Bergen bay and a decent (if too packed) breakfast. Rooms are all right, but could use some repainting and redecorating. Ditto for the bathrooms. The only real problem with this place is the distance. It takes 20min. to get here by bus and all the bus fare (at 20NOK each way) starts to add up and make the place less of a value unless you get the Bergen Card.
