I loved this hostle you can do as much or as little as you like. from hiking and canyoning to oversized chess, pool , fussball. It has a great big lounge or a more intimate verandah. Staff are really friendly .. great mix of guests. Facilities were top notch, a huge kitchen which was spotless as were the bedrooms and bathrooms.

Great Hostel if only it had a bit more atmosphere

Lots of space in common areas - great facilities -- just does lack a little atmosphere. Still if you are intent on getting out into the Blue mountains then it is a superb base. Supermarket (Coles) which is open till midnight is 50m away and the bottleshop even closer.

Excellent hostel but lacking in atmosphere

This hostel has won awards in the past and it's not hard to see why, as the dorms and facilities are very good. My only quibble on that score was the surprisingly small number of washing machines and driers, given the size of the hostel. There's an enormous lounge area which is very comfortable but is maybe so large that it inhibits people's interaction with each other - there wasn't much of a sociable atmosphere, though that's quite common in YHAs. I would stay here again.

This award winning renovated hostel is well worth your time to train it up from Sydney. An easy 2 hour ride through the scenic Blue Mountains the hostel is located about 1km down hill from the station. It started life as a guest house in the 1930's & has been renovated by YHA to a high standard. You can even lounge in the former ball room. It gets foggy & wet some times but the central heating makes up for it and the area is full of cafes with good coffee. Don't forget to try out the local eco walks or if you are less fit check out the Sky rider and the cable car rides down to the board walk on the valley floor. The hostel has all the mod cons & a good mix of local & international guests. It has good security features & a large share kitchen. It's a couple of km walk from the 3 Sisters. If you like art house movies look up the Mt Vic flicks 20 mins further up the train line.

I am not a real fan of YHA, because some Backpckers have more for less, but this one is just groovy. Great staff, good facilities, clean, bit noisy but great location. Really nice renovated building. Check the guestbook of the people who dated their mates in the 40's and came back. Some got even married right there. The building was a dancing palace in the 40's. If I am in Katoomba again, I will definetely come back.

Really enjoyed our stay here in a double ensuite. The rooms have heaters in the bedroom & ensuite which is handy in the winter months. The staff were very friendly and the ambiance is cozy. The hostel is also a nice walk away from the train station and the major sites.

I cannot add much to the comments of the other reviewers on here other than to say that this is the best YHA I stayed in during my 10 months trekking around Australia. It is immaculate, equipped with all the usual facilities. The kitchen is large, there are plenty of places to sit and eat or socialise, which in many hostels there are not, and its well located for exploring the fantastic Blue Mountains, a must see for any visitor to Australia.

I'll admit that I'm not necessarily the biggest YHA fan, but this one is a corker! Excellent facilities, great character, friendly staff and just a much more personal atmosphere than a lot of the large city YHAs. The lounge/dining room is huge and has awesome tables, sofas and chairs, plus a cute little stage area where you can jam on a free guitar loaned out from the front desk...we had quite a good time entertaining the other diners! Rooms and bathrooms were clean and comfortable, and the outdoor areas were fantastic. A perfect place to spend a few days taking in the fresh mountain air and gorgeous views. For a little break, make sure to check out the Aquatic Centre nearby where you can use the pool, sauna and spa facilities for $7.50 - just ask reception and they'll point you in the right direction.

This is a fantastic YHA with nice clean facilities, huge kitchen, pool table, roof terrace and a lovely big lounge with couches, beanbags and log fire! Its close to a supermarket, bottle shop and the Three Sisters of course. Staff are very helpful too. Not as "clinical" as some YHAs are.

While I was living in Australia I got a chance to go to the Blue Mountains and stay in the YHA there. I always recommend the YHA's, though they can be slightly more expensive than other hostels, they're the best. The atmosphere was great and very welcoming. My friend and I visited during Christmas time, and it was a nice place to hangout in. The whole place is pretty well equipped and clean with internet access. We also found it had a good location and was just a short walk to the grocery store, restaurants, pubs and the train station along the main street, not to mention from the Three Sisters. This was very good compared to some hostels I've stayed at in Oz.

An excellent hostel with nice areas to relax and tidy clean rooms. Each bed has it's own reading light and the bathrooms were equally clean. Also a nice bonus was that reception have an acoustic guitar you can borrow. My only criticisms are that the kitchen closed at 10pm which was annoying, and the coin slot internet machines were a bit temperamental (the staff warn you of this however). Overall though an excellent hostel, but possibly a touch expensive for non-YHA members.

Excellent hostel with good rooms (we had a twin). Good, well equipped kitchen and rooms and areas to relax in were first rate. Neat outdoor area to sit and relax too with a statue which looks like it could have been been knocked off from Carbisdale Castle in Scotland!! Great Internet facilities. Parking was good, cycle lockup, short walk to the rail station and great shops and very friendly and helpful staff. Bakery is next door one side (great rolls, cakes, croissants etc) and police station the other! This was our second stay there. Christmas 2003.

The Katoomba YHA is a great place to base yourself for a couple of days if you're visiting the Blue Mountains. It's got a great big lounge room with sofas and open fireplace, as well as a separate tv room with a huge television and more sofas! The kitchen is big and well equiped and the rooms and clean and comfortable. The staff are friendly although it somehow still has the YHA less sociable feel about it.

Hostel paradise!!

After spending a few days in Sydney, the Katoomba hostel is only a 1.5 hour train ride to Hostel paradise. The main indoor living area is fantastic with comfy couches, heaps of mags and a great TV room. The veranda was a highlight and nothing beat grabbing a slab of beer, a cask of the local red from Liquorland next door , fire up the barbie and watch the sunset with your fellow hostel buddies. The only problem was that you get kicked off the veranda at 10pm as people get quite noisy! The rooms were a tad stuffy due to smelly socks drying on the heaters and the kitchen was locked for cleaning fairly early. So get out to Katoomba on the train and prepare to stay for a night or two more than you plan!!

A bit noisey

The old YHA hostel had more character. Too much noise late at night as the telephones have been placed next to dorms and all night guests are ringing home to mum. The outside veranda area is also a source of noise late at night. My advice is to choose your room carefully-preferably top floor South West corner. In winter the rooms are very stuffy as there is no ventilation and everybody keeps the windows shut. C02 levels rise. Good managers and good facilities.

This place is awesome! If you can in any possible way squeeze a couple of free days, or three, or even 2 weeks - go here, you will love it! This hostel is absolutely beautiful, huge clean dorms, REALLY good showers and is in a beautiful Art-Deco building. I'm not normally a fan of YHAs as I often find them very impersonal, but this place is the exception to the rule - everyone there was lovely, and the staff are the friendliest I've ever met in a hostel. They go out of there way to help you. This place has excellent communal areas (and when I say excellent, I mean excellent!) and a great friendly atmosphere about the whole place. You got to check it out! You won't regret it, I swear.

Whilst visiting the Blue Mountains earlier this year a group of friends and myself stayed in this wonderful YHA. There is plenty to do during the day if you like hiking and viewing some of the most breath taking sights in the world. If the nights get boring then nip to the bottle shop next door, get a box of VB, sit back in the luxurious TV lounge and whatch a few of the many videos on selection. The bedrooms are spaceous, clean and the facilities are very new. All together a great place to spend a relaxing week.
