If I were a hostel I'd be the City Backpacker!

The City Backpacker had everything you'd want from a hostel - a lively and laid back atmosphere, cosy and friendly surroundings and helpful staff. Apart from the treck up three flights of stairs to reception, I can't think of much I didn't like. It's in an excellent location, just five minutes walk from the main station and in amongst a collection of bustling cobble streets filled to the brim with bars and cafe's. The rooms are small but each have there own lockers, sink and there's plenty of space to hang up your knickers to dry (doing a washing was an absolute necessity by the time we got to Zurich!). The internet was over the top expensive but then again so is everything in Switzerland. The hostel's kitchen was nicer than my own at home and you could of had a party in it if you wanted. Better still, there were kitchens and toilets/showers on each floor so there was no waiting around. Oh, almost forgot- the kitchen's had massive firdges to keep your beer cold (a must!). If you visit Zurich make sure you go in July when the Street Parade is on and make sure you stay at the City Backpacker - there literally was a party on our doorstep. Don't miss it!

Well, first off, just to clear, the cost of dorms has been upped just a few francs from what it says there (single bed in early thirties and double room in nineties.) You have to be into youth-hostel culture to enjoy this one, but I did (my parents...otherwise.) Of course it's a little noisy, because there is no lockout (curfew) and so people are coming and going, but the rooms were clean, and I was very impressed that they courriered me my car keys I'd forgotten in the room immediately when I notified them! A nice part of town, and sufficient service at the desk. I'd go again, if I could afford Zürich!

This hostel is extremely noisy at night with the resturant trade in the street below, and if you shut the window the room is suffocating. The garbage trucks at 5am weren't too quiet either. The staff are quite rude and don't like to help out with things to do in the city, which there is very little, as I discovered. If you had to come here for some reason then the place is okay, but expensive. If there is no reason to come, don't bother.

I just stayed there for one night but it was ok. We payed 29 FR. for the night in a 4 bed room and 3 Fr. for linen. I froze a little bit because they only have woolen blankets. I didn't shower but my friend says the showers ore ok. The toilets were clean and the rooms, too. Zürich is a very expensive town so I guess you won't get anything cheaper. We bought Spaghetti and cooked it in the hostel. The kitchen was clean, too. Sometimes you have to go to another floor because in your floor are not enough plates or forks.. You can let your backpacks at the reception- even if you are checked out. We even used the kitchen and the toilets later. Nobody cares. I guess you could even come in as a stranger. The key deposit is 20 Fr. and then you get something like a chipcard. The hostel is situated very central, 5 minutes to go from the Grossmünster. Although on Friday night there were many drunk pupils on the street our room was not too loud (except the men from the netherlands on our floor and the cleaning woman *g*) To reach the hostel you have to climb 3 or 4 floor and pass the kitchen of a restaurant which smells awfull :) The Hostel is a good place to stay.

Pro's: close to station, restaurants and attractions; price was quite reasonable (29 Sfr in a 6-bed dorm); rooms weren't too bad (beds were good); flexible check-in time; helpful and friendly staff. Con's: no breakfast; kitchen is very small and has minimal facilities; heaps of stairs to climb to get to the hostel.

Really located in the center of the city, rooms available for 2. do not expect anything more than what you can get in a military camp: rooms do not have toilets inside, nor shower, just a sink. but the staff is very nice and they can keep your stuff for the day even if you're not staying the following night. check out what's going on in zurich on www.ausgang.ch otherwise around the niederdorfstrasse, you may be disappointed if you're looking for action!

The Hotel Biber is close to the train station and the reception was friendly. Those aer the positives. I saw bums paying with hadfuls of change for a night at this place. The showers were gross and it is overpriced. There was no real socal scene.

a hostel right in the heart of zürich's nightlife

The best asset of this hostel is the location: in niederdorf, which is one of zürich's pedestrian areas, and also the area where the nightlife is. the second best asset is that it's located on a sidelane, thus making the place quiet and silent enough for you to get some sleep. What else? The dorms are nice and not too crowded (6 beds), it's clean and there's no curfew. There's also an internet station
