Very basic, but ideal location28 January 2004
Very basic accomodations (beds must be about three feet wide!) in a very run-down building. Bathroms are clean but unisex. somewhat scary to shower next to old men! lots of families stay here, so it's sometimes noisy with crying babies. Don't bother paying for breakfast: there's a Mercator grocery store right around the corner where you can find everything you need and a beautiful café right in the central square next to the church, where you can watch just-married couples get showered with rice as they come out of city hall and are greeted by family and friends. All in all, the price here can't be beat, so grin and bear it and head for the water (in Piran, the water is much nicer. The beach in Koper is right next to the port...)
Basic but not too bad17 August 2003
The Dijaski dom Koper is ideally situated in Koper, right next to the city bell tower and only five minutes walk from the sea. Unfortunately the proximity to the bell tower causes its own problems - namely being awoken at odd times of the night by the bells, but it provides a handy landmark if you get lost. The hostel is clean, and the staff reasonably friendly. However, it is very basic. The beds are basically just wooden blocks with thin mattresses and if you go at the peak of summer then you'll have to put up with the heat, as there is no air conditioning (quite uncomfortable, particularly as the rooms are fairly stuffy). There are no lockers, although you can leave valuables in the hostel safe. When we were there the hostel was taken over by Slovenian families and groups of teenagers, which meant it was often rather noisy, but it was also lively and fun. Breakfast is included in the very low price - bread with jam or pate, and was filling rather than tasty.
