This is, all in all a darn good hostel, it is clean, it is friendly, it's easy to reach by public transport. On the down side the atmosphere can be somewhat lacking. For my two weeks in Helsinki I had an "interesting" roommate, which, well, made my stay in Helsinki "interesting", apart from that, this a great hostel!

We stayed at the hostel at Christmas time,2005 arriving really early from Australia, and thankfully were able to get straight into our rooms. We stayed in the backpacker rooms, which were clean and comfortable enough with lots of room to spread our stuff around. Its a great central location, the number 4 tram gets you to where ever you need to go really. Breakfast over the Christmas period was great and the normal breakfast was good value as well. The showers were a bit of a pain, you kept having to press the button for the water, but at least they are clean. A great place to stay and see the sights.

Hello Folks! In Summer 2004 and in November 2005 I took accomodation in the Euro-Hostel in Helsinki/Finland. First of alle I really recommend everyone who is visiting Helsinki to stay there, because it is a very nice hostels and you feel like they really taking care of you. How to reach? From main train station you walk through the underpass and follow the signs to tramline 4 from lasipalatsi/Glaspalatset. From there you take tram 4 direction Katajanokka/Skatudden until stop Vyökatu/Gördelgatan. After getting off the tram turn left and at the top of the platform turn right. The building you won't miss, is even the hostel! It couldn't be better to reach. To get to the entrance just turn left for the last time and after about 10 metres there is the entrance. reception: On ground floor you'll find the reception with a internet-terminal, hundreds of leaflets for cultural events, restaurants, pubs, ferry connections to the Baltic states and much more. You'll also find a public phone with a phone directory for Helsinki and the entrance to the hostel-owned restaurant, where the breakfast is served too. The reception desk is stuffed 24 hours and everyone is outstandingly friendly and everyone is talking perfect English. This is a great advantage because Finnish language is very hard to learn and to understand! Don't hesitate to ask for anything you would like to know. They know for nearly everything an answer!!! accomodation: You can choose between "Backpackers"-rooms and "Eurohostel"-rooms. "Backpackers"-rooms have finnish (!)-basic standard which is much over the HI-standards and "Eurohostel"-rooms are already refurbished with new furniture and TV in every room! Every rooms has usually two beds and most rooms do not have bunkbeds. There are very good and clean lavatories and bathrooms on the same floor as well as outstanding kitchen-facilities to selfcatering. Everything is so clean, that you can eat from the floor! breakfast: Only in summer 2004 I took breakfast, which is served in the indoor restaurant and it was very good, but in continental style. Normally Finn's have a lot of fish for their breakfast, which I missed there, but fish is certainly not everyone's first choice for breakfast. :-) rates: Rates start at 20,70 EUR which is a very good deal for Finland. They offer a huge variety of special-offers (e.g. "fully tummy"), which often include dinner, tickets for cultural-events and something like that. All in all: There isn't much more to say, because everything is that kind of perfect, that only few words are enough to report about it. Try it yourself, if you visit Helsinki. PS: I don't get anything from Eurohostel for writing this report, but I was so excited, because it's the best hostel I ever stayed in. Thank you for reading my report and bye for now. Shalom!

totally agree with all of pezza's review below - was shocked to find the dorm rooms are actually 2 person (and there was a 20 year age gap between me and my room mate which made the stay like a trip with your mother, but a lot stranger). sometimes there is an advantage to having a few more people per room. It is obviously clean and hotel style, and the tram system to get there is really good, but its not the most friendly place and its random luck who you end up rooming with. I wouldn't recommend it for young solo travellers, but if you are a family or a couple of people it's probably worth a look.

If your a solo backpaker, you won't meet anyone here - the people that stay here are from the baltics, russians or fins. Theres no common area and its a pain in the arse to cook as you have to go to reception and leave a deposit for some things and buy the others !! There are only two beds in each dorm room so if you get a miserable git as a room mate your screwed !! However, it was very clean, good location and the staff were friendly (apart from the guy who looked like bedil from bedil and skinner - he didn't know anything !)

My son and me stayed here 4 days in august 2004. The hostel is to be recommended, although I think 5 stars is a bit exaggerated. location: good, tram 2 and 4 stops at < 1 min. walk reception: efficient and friendly room: enough room and basic furniture, cleanness moderate, some maintenance is necessary. bathroom/toilets: limited number for number of rooms, cleaning moderate. breakfast: basic but unrestricted. Overall: close to centrum (tram 5 min. or 10-15 min. walking) and quiet hostel.

I stayed here in August 2003. Great place and I'd do it again. This place was superby, clean and they have fridge where you can keep food. I don't recall any cooking facilites though. Restaurant downstairs was fine but a bit price as is all of Scandinavia!! Staff was great very knwledgeable. Location is slightly out of way but right on tram line. Nice harbour walsk, runs nearby if you want that. Once caveat, the time I stayed here was a heatwave (in Finland that means it was 85° F ) and it turns out ventilation is really poor even with windows open. It was literally unbearable to sleep in this hostel at night - and worse in daytime - which started at like 4am in summer this far north. Helsinki has high humidity, so beware of that in summer if its hot - that's rare in Finland though.

I stayed at this hostel in April 2000 on a 3-4 day visit. I found the staff to be very welcoming and helpful. The rooms were very clean, and had a secure swipe card for entry (rather than keys). There are nice communal sitting areas, and a free sauna (which I enjoyed greatly). The hostel is located very close to the port. It's extremely quiet, but refreshing in the morning when you step outside and breathe in the pure Finnish air. You can also take a short walk to see the huge cruise liners coming in to dock. If you go to Helsinki, stay here. If you dislike it, send me hate mail!

Having stayed in Helsinki quite a few times I would say that this is the best hostel there. Unfortuntly it is often booked out in advance by large tour groups so it is better to book ahead rather than simply arrive. It is the same price as the other hostel I have stayed in , the Erroto.. which although having a better location is quite dingy and has horrible showers and toilets... for the same amount a little bit more walking is worth it and it is in quite a nice area.

I agree with the previous comments. Staff are very friendly and helpful, and the hostel is very clean and comfortable. Food is good, if a little on the expensive side, but reasonable by Finnish standards! Staying at this hostel is a pleasure in itself.

I have now stayed in the Euro Hostel twice, both times it has been superb! Its clean, friendly and welcoming. It has excellent facilities - sauna, laundry and canteen as well as excellent bathrooms. It is easy to get to on the tram, hardly any walk at all and close to the centre. Well worth it!

This hostel was very easy to find--a short walk from the Rostock-Helsinki ship and I was there. Hostel had an elevator, credit card door lock, comfortable bed, showers were ample with hot water, friendly and helpful staff. They helped me with my plans to Estonia for a day trip. There was a sauna on the top floor which was free in the mornings, but after 5 days in Helsinki, I was sick of saunas. Most rooms were either single or double and were very quiet. The tram stop was located just outside the door of the hostel. The coffee at the hostels just didn't do the trick in the morning and I had to get another cup downtown. I did my laundry while sending messages on the computer to friends back home.

I stayed in the Euro Hostel about a year and a half ago and was most impressed. The rooms offer a very good level of comfort and the hostel is well situated for all of Helsingfors amenities. The staff are first rate and went out of their way to help if they could. They helped me immeasurably with planning onward trips to St Petersburg and Tallinn in Estonia. Breakfast and other meals can be bought from the hostels café which rated fairly. The hostel overlooks the port which can lead to quite a bit of boat-spotting, but may disrupt the slumber of the light sleepers among you. Helsinki can be an expensive place to stay, but this hostel is so reasonably priced you needn't look much further.
