Hippo Lodge is up a very steep hill - however i managed it with a 75litre and 35 litre rucksack huffing and puffing so its worth it to get out of the main drag of Queenstown if you want somewhere a bit quieter. Great views when you get up there. Easy walk when you dont have bags. Friendly staff who will sort out bookings for you. Was Easter weekend so very busy. Had asked for a Double room - i actually got a room with a double bed and x2 bunk beds so i guess a dorm to myself, which at first seemed odd but plently of space to hang all my stuff and no extra charge so definatly no complaints there. Had comfyer beds in previous stays but not bad overall. There were three of these "rooms" that shared a kitchen so plently of space for everyone. No TV in lounge bit though which was a shame. Computer gobbled my money as well but no big loss as there are big cybercafes in town. The cutterly wasnt very sharp and the tin opener didnt work which was annoying as I had bought soup which i had to hammer into. So this could do with replacing at some point. 2 showers - clean enough, and enough for 3 rooms. Went up to the other kitchen/room place above to use the phone and that seemed nicer than the one we were in for some reason. For queenstown this is a good option if you dont mind the hill. Probaly geared towards the more quieter and older market rather than the Kiwi Experiences of this world who would stay "down town".

Because of the high rating I stayed in Hippo Lodge and expected a really nice place, but it was a little bit a dissapointment: it was clean, nice owners, but the climb up to the hostel was not compensated with great atmosphere, there wasn't even pepper or salt in the kitchen, view on the city is ok, but except for really small balcony no space to enjoy it, and communal area is a plain room without any atmosphere! Odd, the name hippo lodge does suggest creative owners, but I didn't see anything of it. It is a ok place, but that's it.

i came to this hostel intending to stay 2 days and stayed much longer. really clean, homely place, comfy dorms with amazing views over queenstown. yes, its up a steep hill, but you don't notice it when you're pissed! Best of all was the atmosphere. Its a small place so you get to know everyone and everyone sits and chats on the sofas or around the dining table (no TV folks, but in this case, its a good thing as you spent more time talking to people). Also, the managers are excellent, V friendly types, who'd often come out on the piss with us. Made some great mates there. Highly recommended!
