It was so cool to stay in a fortress for a night. The hostel has great ammenities - free breakfast, table tennis, a games room with GameCubes, and friendly staff. But the real highlight is the complex you're in and the view from high up on the cliffs above the Rhine. The hike up was strenuous, but well worth it.

Totally agree with the comments re. location - view is magnificent. However, the trek to and from the Hostel is a nightmare when you´re on foot. As the chairlifts only operate from 9am - 5pm, departing from or returning to the hostel outside these times was a major hassle. I have had to resort to calling a taxi to drive up to the Hostel from Koblenz Hbf (Euro9) when I returned from a day outing at 7:00pm. If you have a car, this place would be pretty close to ideal.

I totally agree with Kevin. This is possibly the best view you´ll ever get from a hostel in Europe. I was told to stay here by my Dad who visited over 30 years ago and said to check if it was still there. As we were on foot with heavy packs the walk was a bit of a stretch. However, when we got to the top we found there was a chairlift on the other side. However, if you do walk it the beer in the courtyard over looking both rivers and the whole town is well worth the effort. Couldn´t recommend it highly enough.

What a great location and venue. Surely one of the best for both. Set high above the meeting point of the Rhine and Moselle rivers in an old fortress this hostel is hard to beat for views and atmosphere. The courtyard outside overlooks both rivers and the city below and is a great spot to sit and think or read or drink or whatever. Breakfast is a little cramped as it is not taken in the dining room but in a smaller room and so there is some jostling for food at the table (especially among the groups of schoolkids who were filling the place while we were there). It appears to be very popular and so I would recommend booking ahead. We arrived there on a Thursday night in mid May and could not book the second night (Friday) as it was full and it was almost full for the Thursday night. Booking ahead would also afford you the chance to have a private bathroom if they have any rooms with them because the bathroom was about the only real let-down. There was nothing wrong with them exactly but if you want a little privacy while showering - forget it. The shower stalls have nothing resembling a curtain or screen. While the men's bathrrom was right next door to our room, I am told that the women's was a good hike away. We arrived in a car but be aware that the high setting provides a great view but only if you have the energy to stagger back outside to enjoy it. We met a couple who had walked from the train station and they were pretty well stuffed by the time they arrived. I understand there is a funicular or something so my advice would be to ensure you have clear directions to find it unless you are very fit or have some other form of transport to the top. All in all, if the bathrooms had screens I suppose I would give the hostel 5 stars so if that doesn't bother you, then you will find the hostel very very pleasant.
