Like most hostels in the USA, this one also doesn't have a common room with a bar where you can meet people. That is what makes a hostel so much more fun than a hotel. I don't get that in ueber-capitalistic US they don't realize how much money they can make selling alcohol in hostels.Fun-Factor is totally missing in this hostel (like most US hostels unfortunately) but I definitely recommend as far as the dorms are concerned.

At a basic level, and I guess for the price in NYC, it gives you what you need. Hot water doesn't last too long, Internet doesn't seem to work on the upper floor (drop down to the second to get access). Decent amenities, though if the showers are single sex, a label on the door would be good. If not, the cubicles are pretty small in terms of changing in them with your feet in the water. Meals are available for $2 each for breakfast and dinner, decent pub just next door. For the price it is worth it for short term, but having just come from HI Boston, I was back to expecting effort from hostels. When I mentioned the internet wasn't working, there wasn't much concern, when I inquired when the hot water might come back, a wave of the hand and '10 mins or so'. They're not bad people, nice enough, not terribly engaging in conversation or hospitality. So if I were in a pinch I would prob use here again, but I'd be going in knowing what to expect. The beds are sterling though. The rooms not to cold, and where they might be considered warm, there is a ceiling fan to keep an airflow. Friends were in another room that was bone cold and had no electricity and so they were moved. Just a slight sense of poorly designed. Maybe in a year they'll have things running smoothly? This wouldn't be my first choice, but the location is hard to argue with, nor the price.
