Nice new hostel, far from town though (you get the hostel bus at certain times each day). We had a double room and it was a bit basic - just a window, bed and a locker. The room was clean and it had air con (its free but you had to ask for it to be turned on each day). There is a pool, sunloungers and one t.v in the outside lounge/dining area. Its got internet/payphones and a big tour desk. The Kitchen is new- no ovens just hobs and toaster/Kettle. There are drinks machines/snack machines near the Laundry room (got about 3 machines and 3 dryers. The communal bathrooms are clean with hot showers and big mirrors for the ladies - they are well kept. Nice place but we saw some more exciting hostels in the Town. Cairns does not have a beach : (

we loved staying here we had our own double room with lockers and clean towels, this was a party hostel if you want to have a good time then stay here we met so many nice people, the staff are very friendly and you get a free bus to and from town and they have there own excursion office so you can pick your trip and book it we did the barrier reef trip for $60 it was the funniest trip i went on. there is something for everyone and if you dont want to join in the fun, you can just watch eveyone else have a good time. the free meal everynite was better some nites than others but when ya hungry its comfort.

Deciding where to stay in Cairns can be difficult, as there are just too many places to pick from. I stayed at the Serpent first, as a free night's stay came in my tour package, which is probably what happened to most people who go there originally. As a hostel, the Serpent is ok. The rooms aren't bad, bathrooms clean, there is quite a nice atmosphere to the place, and you seem to strike up conversation with people quickly and get brought into the action. However, the Serpent is way out of town. Its not the only hostel like that, but it is a pain. Although a free bus is run into town at certain times, there is little logic to the timetable. It seems to run on the hour most of the morning, then drops off most of the afternoon, and then does a late run for people hitting the clubs. It might only be a 20 minute walk or so, but when you are there in wet season or in high humid temperatures, its annoying. Eventually I moved into town for convenience. Although you get a free meal every day, it was never anything special when I was there; I'm not a big eater, but if you are you'll be left still hungry, and anyway most hostels do something along these lines, many giving you tokens for the Woolshed pub where you can get a free meal or use it against a more expensive meal to get a discount on it.

I stayed here for 3 nights in January and was very impressed with the place. The building is new, clean, the pool is great and it is overall a very nice place. It almost felt like I was staying at a hotel. A bar opens at 5:00pm every night and there is a different special and that is a free dinner. You can upgrade to a larger portion for $4. Depending on the meal, sometimes I found it very small and needed to upgrade and others I found it to be enough. They also have a menu with other selection and everything is under $10. Staff was very nice also, I would reccomend this place to anyone and would stay here again.

Everyone is so friendly and nice and then take into account the fact that this hostel has THE BEST facilities (you can hardly beleive it's a backpackers!!) - you're bound to have a ball!! Highly recommendable to any traveller - do yourself a favour, stay here!!!

I stayed at the Serpent in August 2004 for around five weeks and I had a fantastic time. It was always spotless, the rooms were a good size and bright and cheery. The facilities are really good and there's a great pool, a fab bar, a volley ball court...and super-dooper friendly staff! (Thanks for everything guys!) Don't be put off by it's location - the walk is actually quite pleasant and takes around 20mins...of course, you can always jump on the free bus which will get you to the centre in 5mins!!

Seems like I unwillingly saved the best (hostel) for last. Spent my last days in Australia in this great flashy hostel. Everything is very clean and inviting. The rooms have cupboards and small lockers for every guest. Great pool, bar (free small meal each day which you can upgrade to a big full size meal for only 3$). Really friendly and helpful staff, if you ask them to pick you up / drop you off anywhere, they will! To sum it up: clean, flashy, inviting, lots of atmosphere, big&clean pool, heaps of fun (party!), free-/cheap meals... simply the best! But do not underestimate the walk from downtown, especially if you carry your 2 heavy backpacks-as in my case ;) Btw, if you feel you are in for a real treat try the restaurant 5 mins down Lake St. (heading downtown).

I stayed at the Serpent last year. I don't know what the reviewer below is on about. The rooms are ample in size - in addition to the beds and backpacks there was still loads of floorspace, small lockers for valubles and even a small area to hang clothes up. If staying at a hostel with a pool and a volleyball court makes it feel like a leisure centre then go and stay somewhere else with cockroaches and bed bugs that feels like a toilet..... This was the cleanest place with the best facilities that I stayed at.

After reading all the positive reviews on this hostel I was v dissapointed when I got here. Yes they have good facilties and its clean, but the rooms are small, and it feels like you're staying in a leisure centre. Wish i'd never left Tropic Days...

This hostel is one of the best I stayed in. Although I am 35, I found it great on every point of view. Unless you don't like modern places, you should like this place as it has everything you need, it is very clean, the beds are comfy, the rooms big enough (even 6 share dorms), with free lockers, air-con., etc. The only inconvenient one could find is that it is in a quite isolated place, but the hostel provides a free shuttle to the center (5 mn) 10 times per day until 12.30 am. So it is not that bad.

I stayed at the Serpent in February 2002 it had only been open for a week or so & it was absolutely brilliant. Dorm beds are a good price & after travelling all the way up the east coast and staying in stuffy little hostels along the way the Serpent feels like luxury. Air con, beautiful swimming pool, chill out areas, great bar & fab (cheap) food. As it had only been open a short time there were'nt many people there but the staff were the friendliest of hostel staff i've ever met & I left considering them good friends. Big up to Martin, 'Big Hills' and Alicia!!! I recommend this hostel to everyone I meet who are heading up the east coast..its brill. keep up the good work guys

Very, Very Good - Definately the Best Place in Cairns.

I visited Cairns in May 2002 as part of 18 months of travelling Oz, NZ the US and Canada (so I like to think I know what I'm talking about when it comes to hostels). After having a look at a few other places in Cairns and not seeing anywhere that seemed particularly good, I tried the Serpent as I'd had it recommended to me by some other backpackers I met in Alice Springs. It's a new hostel so it might not be in Lonely Planet or the other guidebooks yet, but believe me - this place is superb. The facilities are that good it puts many hotels to shame. The Serpent is Australia's first purpose built hostel (so I was told), and has the biggest swimming pool of any hostel, as well as a beach volleyball court, regular BBQ's, a big bar area, and lounge areas on each floor with big TV's that have all the satellite channels (premiership highlights are on at 4pm every Sunday afternoon). There's internet access at a reasonable rate, and washers and driers (although during the dry season its almost as quick just to hang your stuff on the line). The hostel is fully air conditioned too (the AC is on 24/7 in all rooms unless you turn it off - there's none of that sneaky automatic turn off at 10am business like some other hostels), and it has a decent sized kitchen decked out in stainless steel, with lots of fridge space. If you can't be bothered to cook, there are cheap meals available with generous portions at the bar. There's a bottle shop and post office 5 minutes walk away, and it's right next to a big park - very useful for having a kick about with the football, or teaching Canadians how to play cricket. The only down side of this place is it's 20-25 minutes walk outside of Cairns city centre, but there's a free shuttle bus that takes 5 mins and goes from the hostel to town and back again every hour, on the hour, from 8am to midnight. They'll come and pick you up from the airport too. I never found getting into or out of town a problem - and if you're staying out after midnight (which you will be) a taxi back doesn't cost much. Although often new hostels have a trade off in that the atmosphere isn't that good, this isn't the case here. When I was there it was only about a third full as it had only been open a few months, but the staff and the people there were very friendly. I reckon it would be even better when its full. Although the hostel is quite big, the way it's designed it feels a lot smaller and has an atmosphere to match. I gather its recently been added to the weekly Cairns pub-crawl event too. The dorm rooms arent too cramped, and have individual security lockers and key card entry. When I was there the cleaning was done daily by an external cleaning contractor - so the place was spotless. Oh, the bathrooms are key card entry too - worth remembering if you go for a leek in the middle of the night. Otherwise you may find that youre standing in the corridor in just your boxer shorts, youve left your key card under your pillow, you cant get into the bathroom or back in the dorm, and reception doesnt open for another five hours. If this happens I recommend the sun loungers - theyre very comfortable. The bathrooms are clean and have lots of toilets and showers (which are warm and powerful - none of that having to run around in the shower to get wet!). In my whole time backpacking this was the best place I stayed at. If you dont believe me then have a look at the web site, or just stay somewhere else and make friends with the cockroaches.
