Unique retreat unlike your average hostel

Cons
Plague of frogs at night, miles from anywhere
Pros
In rainforest, super-relaxing, friendly staff

The Sanctuary is an eco-retreat rather than a hostel - it just so happens that the cheapest beds are within range of a backpacker budget. The two-bed huts have mesh walls so that you really feel as though you're in the forest, and indeed cassowaries can be seen occasionally wandering the grounds. There are frequent yoga retreats at the Sanctuary, and the general atmosphere is very relaxing. The main downside is that it's not close to anywhere so, without your own vehicle, you'll face a long walk to get to Mission Beach itself - though the Sanctuary usually runs 2 shopping runs per day. (Your legs will get a good work-out anyway as the huts are set on a fairly steep slope.) You can eat in the on-site restaurant but it's not cheap. I would definitely stay here again.

I stayed there one night and it must have been one of the best nights in my life. The atmosphere and the surrounding are more than stunning. It has the perfect mixture between the australian bush and comfort & style. It's the most special place I've ever stayed in and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone who values quality and authenticy over budget neon-light-accommodation

This is the most amazing spot that anyone can stay at! The rooms are huts nestled in the rainforest with nothing but an insect screen between you and nature! The price may be ten dollars more than a regular backpackers but trust me, it is worth every penny! We watched and echidna walk around below our hut as well we saw two different cassowaries walking around! The location in the rainforest is great with extream relaxation on the agenda. The beach is only a ten min walk or so away as well as a national park! Go here for a real experience!

Absolutely loved this retreat! It was totally worth the $55/night for a double. The room was an open-air rainforest hut on stilts, covered in bugproof green netting. This is the place to be if you want to get away from civilization and fall asleep listening to soothing rainforest night sounds. It's located on a very steep rainforest-covered hill and accessible only by their courtesy 4WD. A very nice beach is located just a 10-minute walk through the forest. This is also an excellent place to see cassowaries (endangered giant flightless birds), as a few live around the Sanctuary retreat -- I saw a handful of cassowaries while in this area, there was even one a few steps outside the hut foraging for fruit. The main lodge is fantastic! It has a deck with an ocean view, a luxurious lounge area and library, and a gourmet (not budget) restaurant serving classy meals. Our food & wine bill came out to be more than the accommodation. Bring your own groceries, as they've got food storage bins and a fully equipped kitchen. Also bring lots of insect repellant! The mozzies are incredibly viscious.
