The first few hours I stayed here I thought I was in heaven! The dorms are very private with curtains and plenty of room to store your stuff and the views are marvellous. But then the until then very friendly owner showed his other schizofrenic self.... Because everybody was busy making dinner in the very crowded kitchen and I did not want to mix in a very emotional private conversation of the only two other guests in the lounge, I turned on the tv (which was on standby-mode and the remote was invitingly lying on the table). He bashed in and took the remote and turned it off and said that I had broken a very important rule. No tv! And he went on preaching about the bad stuff tv brings to you very loudly for 30 minutes and did this in such an authorotive way that everybody had to listen! After he went outside somebody told me that the guy has his rules and he does not tell you before hand but if you break them you are in the dog house and a very stupid and bad girl. Not a very homely feeling for me anymore (although I had nice conversations with the other guests later on....). I guess that it depends upon if you not knowingly break a rule if you like this place or not, because until you do everything is just fine. I think it is very strange thought that he does not inform you about the rules beforehand and I guess he kind a likes it to humiliate people in front of others saying how stupid an bad they are. On the old bug-site there are raving reviews and reviews like mine of people who broke a rule they did not know it existed.... (see below) I would not recommend a stay here, because you never know what happends! > > > > Average Reviewer Rating: Number of Reviews: 11 ( Displaying Reviews: 1 - 10 ) Best Choice in Queenstown Reviewer: Anonymous from Kent - UK August 13, 2005 Allround a fantastic experience. The hostel has fantastic views and great facilities, great beds and great showers. I found Evan to be incredible helpful and pleasant to deal with and found him to be the same with all the other guests - from what I observed. Maybe those other people who commented on this site about Evan have a problem???? I would highly recommend this hostel to Queenstown travellers - you definately get your money worth here. 0 out of 3 people found this review helpful Was it helpful to you? Great little place! Reviewer: Anonymous from UK June 25, 2005 I've stayed at this hostel twice now on seperate visits to NZ, and both times I have been more than satisfied with the place, and the owner!. I know people's opinions can differ considerably, but I never would have expected to read things like this said about Evan! He really is a nice guy, maybe he can be a little weird, but I never once felt oppressed or put off by him as some people mention. He was always willing to help with our questions, and he has a great knowledge of the area. I found him to be a very welcoming host. The rooms are clean and spacious, the common areas well-equipped and homely, and the views are totally amazing (well worth the walk uphill). If you are looking for somewhere relaxing and different to stay in Queenstown, and don't mind a little effort for a great view, you cannot go far wrong here. 0 out of 3 people found this review helpful Was it helpful to you? Nice place, odd owner Reviewer: Anonymous from U.S.A. April 19, 2005 Scallywags was a well-maintained guest house with a great view, but because of the owner I can't recommend it. He was often downright grumpy, and god forbid you call him when a rugby game is on. He won't let you use the phone yourself to coordinate with outiftters (he insists on doing it himself), even if you'd booked them *before* you arrived at his place! We met dozens of people in NZ and in terms of warmth and friendliness he's at the bottom of the list. 4 out of 4 people found this review helpful Was it helpful to you? What is This guys problem? Reviewer: Anonymous from Germany March 18, 2005 We have stayed in many hostels around the world, but never been treated this unfriendly! The man who runs the place is like a prisonguard, walking around looking for things to complain about! "It has been 15 minutes since you used the kitchen, and it is not clean enough!". You are staying in his house and he wants you to be grateful for that! Unbeliveble. Complaing about guests, both to their face, and behind their back, throwing our clothes of the washing line to the ground so that he could do his own laundry (!), cursing at people, and he even twice came into our all girls dorm for a long time in the middle of the night claiming to be checking security.....(the doors where all locked) 5 out of 5 people found this review helpful Was it helpful to you? nice place, shame about the owner Reviewer: Anonymous from Sydney February 24, 2005 The place is decent, clean and fairly well equipped, decent (smallish) rooms. It's like staying at someone's house. If you don't have a car, don't stay here unless you like walking up steep hills. The main problem is the owner's unfriendly and unwelcoming and makes you feel like you are intruding upon his territory. And you get to pay for the privilege of intruding. (He asked us to take our washing off the line because he had his own washing, didn't want to use his kitchen because he was there). It's ok if you don't mind a bit of unfriendliness. Won't stay there again even though it was reasonably priced 5 out of 5 people found this review helpful Was it helpful to you? Great facileties- manic-depressive owner Reviewer: jonas from sweden January 31, 2005 There is little doubt that the facileties of Scallywags are great-the wiew, clean rooms, etc, but the owners manic-depressive behaviour makes an otherwise great stay-simply moderate:loud complaints and pathetic sarcasm in front of guests, which often creates an uneasy atmosphere. This fellow needs to re-learn (?) the basics of service management 8 out of 9 people found this review helpful Was it helpful to you? more like living at my parents than a hostel Reviewer: Anonymous from Toronto, ON, Canada November 04, 2004 well, better than living with my parents because of the great people that I met. The hostel itself was as billed by other reviews on this site with the full assortment of bungy jumps on video. keep in mind that there are more restrictions with living here, because, you are essentially living WITH the owner. I was restricted in minimum and maximum days, which days I could book, and when I could book. and welcome to the first 48 hr cancellation policy I ever ran into. Definitely the least flexible hostel booking I made for all of my travel in OZ and NZ. 1 out of 5 people found this review helpful Was it helpful to you? Fantastic view , A place to relax Reviewer: George from India October 10, 2004 One of the best views that can be had in Queenstown. I am not very sure of what the first reviewer is going on about , i found the Owner quite alright and extremely informative. Ask him to show you his bungy videos (he has done more than 500 of them) they are simply awesome. The place itself is on the quite side , it is a place to relax and enjoy the views , if you are after parties stay at the city centre. The beds are clean and new and have curtains to give you your privacy in a dorm. The kitchen is very well equipped, the TV and Hi Fi is excellent. laundry is available (i did not use it, so cant comment on it). It is a walk up the hill , but the walk itself is quite nice through a camping ground. All in all a very pleasant stay. 1 out of 7 people found this review helpful Was it helpful to you? Recommended Reviewer: Richard from London February 24, 2004 The review by the Bug reviewer is accurate apart from the stars allocated. I would say that if you want somewhere to chill, relax & enjoy the view then this is the perfect place. If you do wanna party in town, then it's a 15 minute walk home - uphill. Occasional people may not get on with the owner as in the case of the first reviewer, but after staying there for 4 nights, I can say that he's a fair, honest & firm bloke & there's nothing wrong with that. All in all it was a very pleasant stay & experience. Good points - Clean, comfy beds, no big dorms, Evan the owner introduces you to anyone around, Fully equipt kitchen, Superb Hi-Fi & TV, Evan looks for cheapest deals when booking excursions. Not so good points - Uphill distance from town centre, Having to book so far in advance, which occurs to all hostels in the South Island. 3 out of 8 people found this review helpful Was it helpful to you? best place i've ever stayed in!!
