My husband and I stayed in a private ensuite room for 4 nights in August 2008. The location was great, very close to Central Station, Chinatown, and several museums and markets. Our room was just the right size with a table, chairs, and a small bench to place our packs on. It was extremely clean, as were the linens, towels, and bathroom. The bathroom was a good size and came with plenty of towels, soap, and glasses for water. Water pressure in the shower wasn

Stayed for a few days in November 2005. For first time visitors to Sydney this is a good first base. Very close to city rail & coach stations and hence convienient for Airport transfers. Its functional rather than friendly - Yes a great kitchen but with Chinatown a short distance away with its great value meals who wants to cook. More expensive than most hostels it is worth staying a few days but then get out and see the real australia. Stayed again in November 2006 - perfect for what I needed - access to a clean /quiet dorm bed after a long flight from the UK.

Great hostel in terms of location - right next to the central station and walking distance to all major Sydney sights. Also runs a shuttle service to Bondi. Very clean, excellent facilities and friendly staff. Only downer was the lack of atmosphere. Over 500 beds means it's difficult to meet people.

I stayed in loads of the YHA's when travelling around Australia, most of them are safe, clean, friendly and regimented in a good way! I stayed in a double room with en-suite facilities. The hostel is Conveniently situated near the central bus & railway stations. Its also close to China Town and Darling Harbour, the Harbour, rocks etc. is only a couple of minutes ride on the train. This was my one on my favourite hostels during my stay in Oz:-) Book early if your planning on going to Sydney in the Summer months as it's pretty busy.

This Hostel is amazing, it has everything that a 5 star hotel has. There is a cheap cafe downstairs, and the bathrooms, dorms etc are very clean. The dorms are very spacious with the bunks being very comfortable. The location is excellent being just a stonesthrow away from Central station and the bus stop. Staff are very helpful and reception is 24hrs. I would highly recommend this hostel as a alternative to staying in a hotel.

Ten minutes from beautiful Darling Harbour, a stone's throw away from Paddy's Market and Chinatown and right across the street from Central Station, Sydney Central YHA has a great location. Catching the trains and buses were convenient and all the major attractions were just minutes away. If I wanted to take a walk, I would just stroll down George Street for fine pubs (Paddy Maguires is a few blocks away and Three Monkeys is a few blocks more) and excellent shopping, and if it struck my fancy, keep going all the way to the Rocks and Circular Quay. Cheap eats are available at Paddy's Market in the food court just around the corner, along with bargain shopping for souvenirs. If you want festivity, check out Darling Harbour during the day (just a 10-minute walk away), or if you want to relax, take a stroll there at night... the neighborhoods around the hostel and Darling are safe. The hostel itself is brand-spanking new, with a reasonably priced cafe on the ground level (check out their Specials of the Month!), a great pub downstairs on the corner, Scubar - home of Monday night crab-racing! They've even got a huge cinema room, sauna and pool upstairs. If you step out of the pool area and out onto the balcony, there's a nice view of western Sydney (though a huge building blocks everything to the north). The rooms are reasonably spacious and clean, with individual lockers to stow your stuff. I was there in mid-June 2004, so the weather was variable; nonetheless, the room still remained reasonably warm. One complaint I have is that windows don't open, so if it gets stuffy in there you're out of luck. Also, when you swipe your magnetic keycard, the door handle doesn't slacken... instead, you have to push the door open, which causes a deafening *CLACK* noise that has a good chance of awakening your roomies. My particular room only had two electrical outlets, so it was inconvenient when you wanted to charge your batteries and were sharing with 5 other people. The kitchen is big, with many refrigerators to store your food and enough stoves to accomodate your needs. The dining area is spacious and well-kept, resembling a diner since there are private booths. Bathrooms are clean, but you need to access it with a keycard, and you can only access the bathroom on the same floor as your room (so take in consideration that you have to wait for the elevator if you've got to go badly). There's a main lounge on the 1st floor, where the kitchen is, and has a games room. However, there are lounges on most every other floor (there are 9 floors altogether), some just for reading or chillin, and a few TV rooms. With all that said, Sydney Central does have that sterile and regimented feel that YHA's are notorious for having. Though the 1st floor lounge is huge, it's layout is sectioned off, making it difficult for people to congregate. Also, it didn't seem popular with many backpackers, so there didn't seem to be any central location where people hung out, making it difficult to meet people. Meeting people did take an extra effort. Also, it is one of the most expensive hostels I've heard of. Even with a YHA card, I still paid A$27/night for a 6-bed dorm. So even though the facilities are comparable to a hotel, it certainly feels like it due to the atmosphere and the high rates. Nonetheless, I'd still recommend it since it's got high standards and has a great location.

Normally, I hate these huge, sterile, impersonal hostels, particularly YHA ones. Curiously, though, I've found this one to be fairly pleasant. It's close to Chinatown and the station, and it's a really nice walk to Darling Harbour, the Rocks, etc. I really want to hate the place, but for some reason I don't. It must be the people who stay there, because it has a nice vibe. I even eat at the restaurant downstairs when I'm in Sydney just for the day. Great for a perve!

Unusually social for YHA

Besides confirming all the good things said about this hostel I´d only like to add that it is an unusually social place, compared to other YHA hostels. Even during the week the "Scubar" (bar/small night club under the hostel) is crowded and a real fun place where you simply have to get social with other people, locals from Sydney as well as people from all over the world.

A really good hostel. Excellent security and lockers available. The staff are really friendly and helpful. The rooms are basic but really clean. TV rooms and movie lounges in the hostel but only the one kitchen for what is a pretty big hostel. The size of the place makes it a bit impersonal if your on your own however. The location is great for the station but isn't really that central for the main attractions in Sydney. About a 20min walk to Darling Harbour and about the same to the main shopping areas. Overall a really clean hostel good for a couple of nights stay but for any longer I'd look for a more central, smaller hostel.

Simply the best in Sydney

Being an Aussie and having journeyed to Sydney many times I have found it is the best I have stayed at. Many of those in the Cross and Glebe are on the unhygenic side and not secure. I have stayed in a number of flea holes and rooms were there are too many people. I am willing to pay a little extra for quality. It depends on your standards. Also I like a good night's sleep. If you are at the Cross or Glebe you have to add the cost of transport into the city onto your accomodation bill. This hostel is already there. This hostel is the next block to the interstate rail station (Central) and also the interstate and country buses- 5 minutes away. Great views fron the top floor and it has a swimming pool and sauna. Lots of TV rooms in case you don't like "Home and Away". The dorms are not crowded as YHA complies with NSW Health regulations. Kitchen is clean and adequate. There is a great bar downstairs and a convenience store and cafe as well. The downside is that it is almost always booked out a few days ahead. It has one of the highest occupancy rates in Australia (98.6%). I wonder why.

Good facilities, well located.......but, the usual YHA rules apply ; its too big, impersonal and regimental. Thats all I can say. Nice for a night, as applied to me on my way to the airport the next day, but for a longer stay in Sydney would probably be a bit boring.

I agree with people saying that this place is huge as it has over 500 beds and while I was staying there it was booked out, but if you're willing to make the effort then there are a lot of people to meet here. It may be a little more expensive than some of the other hostels around the city but it is clean and does have good facilities. Sydney is an expensive city so if you want something fairly decent you will probably have to pay a little extra for it. It's an easy stroll down to the harbour but if you think it is too far to walk then you can hop on a train just across the street and travel the couple of stations down to Circular Quay. The city trams down to Darling Harbour also leave from Central Station as well as the Greyhound/McCafferty's buses so I think that this hostel is actually quite well placed. So if your budget allows it and you aren't intimidated by lots of people then I think this hostel is a good place to stay.

Clean, good facilities, but too impersonal

If I could, I'd actually give this hostel two and a half stars. It's very central (in spite of what the reviewer below says. It's a good 20 minutes walk from the Harbour, but there's lots of Sydney to see on the way!), it has fantastic facilities - including the biggest kitchen in any Australian hostel I ever stayed in. And it's clean - which can't be said of all hostels, particularly in Sydney. However, it's a bit big (5 floors) and impersonal. It just doesn't encourage much mingling, and there's relatively no atmosphere. I stayed at the YHA for my first week of a year's working holiday. When I think of some of the grubby places I stayed in later, I was lucky to have such a comfortable, sanitary start. But I was naturally a bit homesick, and found it a bit daunting. It's also quite expensive. If you're passing through Sydney, and don't want to pay hotel prices, then I'd recommend it as a safe, clean, and central stopover. But for fun and a feel for the city, go elsewhere! Incidentally, I stayed in a few YHAs around Oz, and overall felt the exact same way about them all.

Sydney Central YHA is a great "all-encompassing" hostel. There are TV lounges, great laundry facilities, a travel desk, bar, barbecue area and pool. It is an enormous place, so it feels a little formal, and is not for everyone. But if you don't mind a larger hostel, Sydney Central YHA has heaps of stuff to keep you occupied and is in a very convenient and happening location.

Has a convinient location with quite reasonable "value for money" in the area. As a single traveler excellent facilities. The rooms are very bare and for $80 a double room if you are a couple there are better equipped rooms with more privacy for a similar price.

The hostel has excellent security, is situated very close to anything you could ever want in Sydney. It even has a pool, spa and sauna! The downside is that it is quite expensive. It was $29 with a YHA Membership Discount.
