Although this hostel is clean (except for the kitchen) & the ensuite rooms were reasonably nice, the service is AWFUL!!! Staff are extremely unfriendly & unwilling to help! We stayed here for 2 nights & after checking out, asked to store our bags for a few hours before having to catch the airport shuttle (a free service supposedly provided for guests). We were very rudely told there was no room for our luggage in the baggage storage area because 'a big tour group would be checking in later'. Unlike most hostels I've stayed at, all the staff we dealt with were a lot older & seemed totally out of touch with / uninterested in the needs of the young backpackers & travellers that make up the majority of their guests. Other poor points are: the hostel is in the middle of a food court so it is noisy at times; the mattresses are those really cheap, thin, uncomfortable foam ones; there are no dishes, cups or cutlery in the kitchen so you have to rent a set for a $20 deposit; they also make every person in the room get a separate key w/$20 deposit for each which was annoying because we were a group of 4 who only needed 2 keys amongst us & didn't really want to fork out $160 for deposits (keys + kitchen sets).

This place gave me the chills. Sure looks like a prison with brick walls and concrete floors.

This is by far the WORST backpacker I've lived in for the years of backpacking in Australia. Firstly, we were greeted by very rude and unprofessional staff members for check-in. It was shocking to find that we have to climb up flights of stairs to go through a tunnel of brick walls to get to a door that indicates our room cluster. As we walk in to further locate our room, we were appalled by the condition of the toilet that we passed by. We were shocked as we opened our room door. It has a strip of small windows near the ceiling on one wall condusive for a washroom and a smaller window on another wall. The room is merely large enough to have a double bed, a bedside table and a plastic garden chair. Air-conditioning is in the previous walkway, and we suppose that one small home air-conditioner is meant to provide cool air circulation to all the rooms in that one cluster through the small strip of 'washroom' windows near the ceiling. Outside on the dirty joined veranda, we found broken down washing machines. In the kitchen, dirty cutleries and plates were piled around the sink and utensils are in limited supplies for such a large backpackers accommodation! There is lack of space to prepare food. The kitchen is speechlessly filthy. It was impossible to sleep at night with doors that closes with a bang! People were going in and out the whole night and we could hear the loud music from the pubs on the main street. The entire night was filled with doors opening and closing loudly. It wasn't really fault of the other backpackers, it was the faulty door springs. There is lack of privacy in the double room too. Without air-conditioning, it was not possible to not open the windows for air circulation, however, then we could hear our neighbours conversations. Heed our advice, DO NOT STAY in this backpackers. Go to Magnums or YHA on the main street, we lived there after our cruise instead of coming back to Airlie Waterfront and it was an absolutely different environment and comfort level (MUCH MUCH BETTER with air-conditioners in each room, much cleaner and newer toilet and kitchen facilities). I hope the details portrayed how grossed this place is. I crossed my heart that all mentioned above is true and not due to some misunderstandings with the rude staff members, who also left us standing at the counter for a long time waiting for some travel, cruise advice.

There were too many stairs, the bathrooms were never clean and didn't have a fan which meant when you finished your shower it was like a sauna. The common fridge was abouyt 20 years old and was rusting.

Dire!

Cons
Overpriced, cramped, no air-conditioning, etc, etc...
Pros
Some good advice on Whitsundays

$60 a night for a "twin room" - in reality a breeze-block box barely big enough for two single beds, plus no air conditioning, no lockers, and no windows - was far, far too much. The only redeeming feature was some good advice about trips around the Whitsundays, hence 1 star. Otherwise it would be a big fat zero... Do NOT stay here unless you have completely run out of other options.

Some of the bad reviews below sound like a different hostel to the one I stayed in. I stayed in a 4-bed dorm the first 2 nights: fine, clean, if the bathroom was busy you could just use one around the corner. The next 2 nights I styaed in the 10+ bed dorm (above the kitchen) which lacked ventilation, especially for the poor dudes stuck up the far end. Only fans in there which would be a problem in the summer, but I was there in August. Not a party-on-Bill&Ted kind of hostel, but a great hostel to chill out. nice view of the beach (just across the road) from the balcony/common rooms. And I never saw one la cockaracha...

Worst nights stay in Australia so far - the rooms are filthy, you come out of the bathrooms feeling dirtier than when you went in! I'm positive this place has not been cleaned for at least 2 months. The building is not that secure as entry is via a side door that is left open all the time meaning anyone can access and use the facilities and i'm sure they do. Pictures on flyers and website very misleading - DO NOT STAY HERE - Airlie Beach is cool - staying here will ruin it! Beaches looks like a tidy place - i'd give that a go if was you.

The Worst In Queensland

Arile Waterfront is by far the worst backpacker resort in queensland. It's rooms were poor, we did not get the room we ordered, the bathrooms were old and have not been cleaned in months, things had been damaged and not repaired, only hall way airconditioning, the staff were rude and we were overcharged. Do not believe the pictures on their web site and I suggest you book either Koala or Beaches.

AWFUL! POSSIBLY THE WORST HOSTEL IN AUSTRALIA!

We travelled for 9 hours on a bus to arrive in Airlie Beach late at night, we got to the hostel and paid for 1 night. We went to our double room and for $55 it was shocking! The door wouldn't lock, there was no air-con in the room, and in the rooms where there is air-con it is just like the hallway being airconditioned and slatts over the bedrooms to let the air in. The staff were unfriendly and would not give us our money back. The website is misleading and I feel like they were just after our backpacker bucks! I strongly recommend that you do not consider staying here.

Not a highly social backpackers, but very clean, great views, and good location. The air-con makes it a great escape from the heat. Good food places nearby.
