Had a great stay here at Aqauarius and it most definatly must have changed since the last reviews......The kitchen common area, bar and reception area's are all brand new. The kitchen is huge, has a walk in fridge, 5 stoves and a huge dining/tv area. The new bar by the pool is pretty impressive too always something on like karaoke or other stupid games and real cheep drinks. You get a free dinner everynight in the bar included in your stay. The staff are helpfull enough, all the dorms have there own bathrooms which look pretty new. Um what else beach is real close. You are not allowed to drink in your rooms any more and pretty stricked about it, it good in someways and bad in others. All in all a pretty good place to stay in a beautiful part of the world!

Ok well as always its always your experience with the hostel that prompts an attitude adjustment. I stayed there for 5 nights and everynight was brillaint upuntill the last one. Definetly if you wanna get drunk, party then this is the place for you, advise you to go at the begining of the week because Cheeky Monkeys (the notorious Coyote bar has a mexican night of did when i went) and obviously its the begining of the week so less busy. Its always about the people who make it luckily i had some brilliant guys untill they left and the last night was...well not good. This hostel don't seem to mind letting in Non international travelers so i had the luxary of spending my last evening with 5 drunk Ozzie lads away for the weekend. As i had an early trip next day it did not help with them coming in drunk but again not really the hostels fault...just hostel life. I will say one thing you will spend alot of money in Byron bay. Reason being of course because its so touristy there are so many food places to eat, you have a subway across the road(which stupidly to my horror does not have a toaster) and the kitchen appliances were god aweful. two hobs between possible atleast 200 guests. I guess its so you are more than likely to buy their resturant food. Erm if your traveling up the coast you've probably discovered how for some reason places get stingier and the fridges get smaller... wel you have to rent your sheets, and theres one fridge between everyone. Please everyone remember this is a year ago since i went things may of changed.

Its an awesome place, specially cause its really close to the beach and the city. The rooms are really nice, beds are confortable, and although at night can be a bit too hot, you cant help having a great time there. The kitchen gets really busy and maybe is not as big as it should be for the amount of people that stay there, but anyway, they run different meals everynight, which sometimes are just better than trying to cook yourself.

Byron Bay is awesome, the aquarius was so close to everything ! We asked for a double on-suite and were pleasantly suprised with what we got - although you do have to go through a dormatory style apartment first as the double room was above that. We had a big bed/nice bathroom with shower/toilet. The t.v was big and we also had a balcony above the pool and bar. The room was more of a swedish chalet - it suited us. There is also a tour desk down by the reception -very helpful. They have a dvd/tv room also and a laundry. The Communal Kitchen was quite small for the amount of people that were there - it was clean and they also have a member of staff there to clean up and keep it tidy after the 6.00 dinner rush. Your not meant to eat in your rooms but we took ours up a few times. The room had a fridge and a kettle with free tea/coffee etc. The balcony was nice. There is a woolworths near the main bus stop and there is plenty of shops near the aquarius also the beach is just up the road. I would book in advance if you can, it was really busy when we were there. They pick you up from the bus stop, its not far to walk if you have a light backpack/luggage!!

For the people who say this place is amazing then they are obviously the kind of backpacker who dont mind the toilets stinking of pea and the kitchen dirty and living in a bit of a mess. The whole lay out of this hostel would be great but its so run down now. We stayed in a double room but it was inside a 8 bed dorm and it wasnt cheap so that was really crap because it made you feel like little outcasts in a closed out room which I have to say was tiny with no power supply sockets, mirror, fly screen or anything which you would at least expect after paying $85 a night! We made up some excuses and left getting our money back for the pre paid days we'd given! Dont stay here, go along to holiday village. Youll have the best stay for the same price and its really worth it. I promise you.

We stayed in Byron Bay at the Aquarius in Dezember 2004. The Dorm (8 Bed) cost 30 Dollars per night. The dorm was equipped with 4 bunk-peds, a table with four chairs and the remains of a kitchen (fridge). There were no screen windows at one side of the room, so all kinds of animals came in for a visit by night. The beds were OK, but I would have liked a lamp at every bed + some storing space. There were no lockers etc. in the rooms, but valuables could be deposited with the friendly staff. The bathroom (wich we shared with a extra double room) was a mess. It seemed like it wasn't cleaned as least for the time we were staying at Aquarius. The wall was missing tiles and the shower was in a bathtub, which was very difficult to clean with the shower and therefore could only be used wearing thongs. There were no bed-bugs in the room - it seems they got that problem under control now. When we came back from the city by night the place was very quiet so it was perfect for a good sleep. Best thing about this place: Free bodyboards + friendly staff The prices are to high for what they are offering, but it still is a nice place to stay for some days (if you are not afraid of spiders)

Paid $32 per night for a bed in a large 8-person dorm with ensuite so pretty expensive (cleaners come in every day but sometimes don't do that great a job - I guess they had their work cut out though removing all the beer bottles!) but there was a great atmosphere and top floor rooms have nice balconies. There's also a bar fridge and kitchen sink in the room. There is also a great pool and bar area where there are trivia nights and really cheap decent meals (BBQ, all u can eat pasta etc.). Plus this hostel is right near the centre of Byron - just a short walk to beach, clubs, pubs and restaurants. Met a great group of people from all over and partied every night - didn't get too much sleep but I was in Byron after all! In regards to other negative reviews - I think the atmosphere in a place is largely what you make of it.

I made the mistake of paying for a week in advance. In the week i was there there was a massive problem with bed bugs, one girl even had to go to hospital. What topped this place off though is when the manager told my girlfriend that he would give her a job cleaning, if she sun bathed topless around the pool!!! We was'nt that desparate so left! Overall, dirty and un-friendly, loads of better hostels in Byron.

I'm not sure what everyone's talkin about because Aquarius is by far the best place i stayed in australia and new zealand, so good i stayed for 3 months. The atmosphere rules, its super chill but always a party. The hostel is less than a minute walk from the beach and the staff are super friendly and helpful. Definitely stay at aquarius.

I stayed here in April 2003 and was very disappointed. The overpriced room was stuffy and dirty could not possibly be described as "high quality". I arrived late in the evening and was checked-in by the unhelpful security guard and I was the only girl put in a guys room which seemed unecessary as they weren't full. It is well located but there are much nicer and cheaper hostels in Byron nearer both the town and the beach. Don't stay here unless you're desperate!

I stayed in the Aquarius at the end of a surf trip with Aussie Surf Adventures (www.surfadventures.com.au). They booked us in so we didn't have to look for accomodation at the end of the trip. Because there were about 30 of us from the trip staying there we didn't have a problem meeting people. The hostel itself was clean and comfortable, the staff were very friendly and the food was good. It's easy walking distance to the main drag and the beach, and they have lots of facilities available at the hostel (pool, internet, travel shop).

Its not hard to see how this hostel supposedly used to be a 4 or 5 star hotel. The rooms are nicely decorated with maple wooden panels, and although the dorms can have lots of beds the one I was in was split over a mezzanine level which if anything added to its charm. Balconies and ensuites were a definite plus and the verandah that connected the rooms was a nice way to socialise under soft light in the evenings if you didnt fancy going downstairs to the bar. I also stayed at the Arts factory and found this place a refreshing change where the rooms were bigger and cleaner, the location was excellent & the guests were friendly. The on-site travel agent (Justin?) was also a really nice guy (he had lots of time for me even though it was clear I wasn't going to buy anything). Definitely worth checking out if you're walking past/nearby.

Clean and central, but not overly friendly

Admittedly, this is not the friendliest of hostels, and it seems to think it's better than it actually is, but I did enjoy my stay there, and would be happy to recommend it. It's extremely central to shops, bars, and cafes, and the facilities are adequete. I was a little surprised to find that I was in a 8-person dorm, and that a door in the dorm actually led to a double-room - the occupants of which also shared the dorm's communal en-suite. The dorm was big, so we weren't cramped as such, but if you don't get on with the other 'inmates' it's a bit close for comfort. Thankfully, I met some lovely people, and we took full advantage of the pretty balcony area, as well as the lively bar downstairs. They were running a special offer when I stayed there - free breakfast - which took the sting out of the fact that it's not the cheapest hostel in Byron.

close to centre and beach the aquarius was a clean, friendly and affordable place to stay. most times the staff was friendly, helpful, sometimes too busy and "cool". the atmosphere at the cafe was absolute clinical customers seemed to disturb... I liked the bar and the evening meals, the open fire, swimming pool. homepage and email do not work!
