Great Hostel if staying in the rooms at the back

Cons
Bit out of town

We stayed here in Jan 07. We stayed in the house out the back by the swimming pool. We shared a living room and facilities with one other couple. Our double room was great lots of space in the lounge and kitchen areas. Can not comment on the main house as did not go in there much. It is a bit of a walk in to town but worth it if you can stay in the house by the pool.

I stayed here 3 times in my travels totalling 7 months all together and its the most fantastic hostel i've ever stayed at, maybe i'm a bit biased but i met 3 different groups of some of the best friends there, and came to think of it as my second home, theres somthing about the place!. the house is a lovely well maintained an clean old colonial era thing with verandas and a swimming pool and it has a tv room and the owners seem to make an effort to look after you (though one lady who works there on sat-sun can be difficult). the dorms are only 4 beds and spacious and its on a quiet side street so you can get a kip if you work caxton street round the corner is a lot more mellow drinking scene than the valley (calypso bar and o learys pub i miss you!) aussie way rules!

This is a great place if your travelling with your partner. If you can ask for the room with the four poster bed and balcony. $53 for the room per night is a bargain!!! It's so so nice and clean. It's like an old colonial ozzie place. got a nice romantic feel to it and you basicly share a top half of a house with one other couple with everything you need.!!! So what if it's a ten minute walk into the city, it's more than worth it. And stay a while, we wish we could of!!!!!!

This hostel is brilliant for couples Id say and people who are not so interested in going out clubbling every night and being loud etc. You know what I mean!! This place is brilliant value $53 a night and so clean and quiet. It has a lovely swimming pool and its also very clean. The bit of the house we're staying in is shared with only another couple and our own shared toilet with them and kitchen which has everythin in it (microwave, oven, all utensils, glasses, crockry, the lot!!) Brilliant little balcony off our room too so we can eat our meals out there together too. Its so sweet and i recommend it highly if you'd like a quiet few days. 10 min walk to centre of Brisbane and round corner to all the pubs.

really nice place, beautiful old house. We had a double room which was really clean. The house at the back is nice with a big lounge so you can chat to people you've met. The staff are really friendly and its only 15 mins from town. If I was staying for a long time I'd definatel stay here.

Great hostel with rooms only sleeping 4 people - nice change from the larger places I have stayed in. Mine had a balcony with great views of sunset! Hostel only 10-15 minutes walk to town and plenty of pubs and restaurants just around the corner. Staff were very helpful and collected me from the transit centre within only a few minutes of calling. Swimming pool ace and very clean. Fridge in the rooms meant food was safe too! Just a great place to relax for a few days, kick back and have a few beers!

What a fab place! doubles are gorgeous and if you are lucky to get the house out the back - the best we have stayed in! Own kitchen, living room, cable TV etc! The pool and air conditioning also a welcome relief from the heat! Felt more like a home than a backpackers. Went for a week and ended up staying for two! Staff especially great with booking tours - without the hastle of a tour shop and worked out cheaper. Definitley recommend this as a city retreat.

I was excited about this place: Charming Victorian home, pool, supposedly great location. While there is nothing exactly wrong with this place, it didn't live up to expectatons. It's an alright place to stay, though I found it a bit shabby and poorly managed. Plus, the kitchen is tiny, and the stoves don't work very well. It's a quiet place, and I found it difficult to really meet people here. I wound up in the city or Fortitude Valley every night anyway and ended up moving to a hostel closer to the great nightlife.

similar kind of thing really, I did manage to get picked up but it took ages. The place was ok, but the attitude of some staff was terrible. I had some important stuff nicked from an upstairs single sex dorm. The lady in charge on reception basically did nothing to help me, and made me feel like it was my fault. I also heard on the grapevine that it wasn't the first time it had happened in that particular room. This made it all the worse, so be carefull or just stay somewhere else.

I got to brisbane intending to stay for three days and ended up staying in aussie way for two months as I liked it so much. The house is a really great old thing with a veranda, pool table good kitchen and big swimming pool and is always really clean. The owner christina is a fantastic and is always really helpful and friendly, there's always a really homely vibe around the hostel and as I met so many great people there I had a blast. It's right near caxton street where there are good bars and take aways. Hope to get back up to brissie to stay again Ta!

The Guest House Was Great!

We did not get to stay in the main building of this hostel, which looked alright. But the guest house at the back of the complex was wonderful. We stayed upstairs, where there are just two double rooms, for two couples and that is it. The rest of the house is yours. Incuding a gorgeous proper fitted kitchen with fridge and freezer, a lounge with TV and dinning table, a huge bathroom with a shower and big cast iron bath in the middle of the room. And just down the stairs is the swimming pool, and your own entrance at the back to come and go as you please, close to Caxton St nightlife.

I heard good things about this hostel so booked a twin room for myself and friend for the weekend of the world cup quarterfinals. The booking was made two weeks previous and was suprised that they still had space on what I knew was going to be a v busy night in Brisbane. I arrived in transit centre and gave them a ring to request that our free pick up come out (probably could have walked but had a load of bags/tired etc). I was told that the pick up wasn't running and it would be no use to me anyway since there was no record of my booking. There were no other beds in Brisbane and ended up having to stay in some Travel Lodge 15km away for twice the price. What p*ssed me off more was their attitude towards me, they really couldn't care less that there had been a mistake made somewhere. The travel desk at the transit centre didn't seem too surprised by problem and I even met a guy who had exactly the same thing happen to him with a similar rudeness. Aussie Way may be a nice place to stay but I guess I'll never know. BE CAREFUL.

yeah they do have a pick up service, but I almost had to beg them to come and pick me up after a long journey so that was a bit disappointing. The hostel itself was alright, small and quiet with a homely atmosphere. The kitchen was well-equiped and just like my kitchen at home!! Most hostels in Brisbane are located out of the city centre so thats not something to regard as a bad thing.

A sweet small hostel. You feel there like in a family. But you need some minutes to walk to city center. It's a recommend place if you wanna stay longer than one day.

Peaceful oasis and a nice place to spend time

I agree with all that the previous reviewer said. I think they do have pick-ups though. I'm stubborn and chose to walk up the hill. Thankfully it was a cool day. Stayed in a 4-bed dorm, on a very high top bunk, but that's alright. The best part was the overall cleanliness and pleasantness. The upper balcony is great for settling in with a book and a beer on a slow evening and listening to the traffic and the neighbours. The kitchen and TV room are small, but well-stocked and comfortable. The pool out back is a really nice touch too. The location is alright for seeing more of Brisbane. You can walk downtown in maybe 15-20 minutes at a good pace. It's also a short walk to the Castlemaine XXXX brewery, which, unfortunately wasn't giving tours when I was there (Mon.-Weds. only I think). There's a handful of eateries, a good bottle shop, and the strip of other big hostels nearby too, if you absolutely have to have some noise in your evening.

The place has loads of atmosphere and nice rooms and bathrooms. A little hard to check out in the morning with no one manning the desk in the garage out back. Close to transit center (about 10-15 min. walk) but you have to walk up hill most of the way (with all your stuff with you). Doesn't have a shuttle service. Spooky at night to walk to.
