Balhouse - worst hotel i've ever stayed in
7 June 2010
Cons
It's a toss up between how filthy it was, and how rude the management were...
Pros
leaving early - even without a refund!

My wife and I paid for a week but left after 3 days. The linen was filthy (i mean REALLY filthy), there were no curtains and the flyscreens were broken. There was rubbish in the room, mould in the fridge, kitchen and bathroom (not to mention on the cutlery and cooking equipment). Our bathroom window opened straight onto an external staircase and had no curtains (so everyone could watch you on the loo. Nice!) There's a gig venue next door so it's noisy all night when a show's on. My wife complained about the dirty linen and the manager swore at her. We were refused a refund for our unused nights, but we were so grateful to get out of there we went and stayed in a hostel instead, which was much much better. Their website is completely misleading. It shows pictures of clean rooms with facilities which have been put in just for show. There's a picture of a swimming pool on their website under "our facilities", which is also a total lie. They describe themselves as clean, quiet and comfortable, but these are all complete lies. I knew they were cheap when I booked them, but I didn't expect to be sleeping in such a horrible place. I've slept in some rough rough places before, but nothing like this. I can't emphasise this enough - PLEASE DON'T GO THERE!!!

I cannot explain how angry we were when in April this year (2006) we rang our accommodation, Balhouse Apartments, from the Brisbane airport only to be told our room was not available!! I had arranged for 6 nights via email several months previous, securing with credit card details. We, my hubby, myself and 2 1/2 month old bubs, were stranded without anywhere to stay, with no warning whatsoever, a pretty lousy explaination, and no assistance to find alternative accommodation. On the other hand, after a stressful afternoon carting our baby and our luggage around Brisbane and a fortune in mobile phone calls, we eventually booked in to Annie's Shandon Inn, a bed & breakfast in the city centre, and it was fantastic!! The absolute opposite with friendly and helpful staff, and a quaint little cottage feel.

We had booked to stay at Balhosue apartments, a sister property to this one, and were told to go to Balmoral house to do our check in. We were very disappointed, upon arriving at Balmoral House, to find that our intended accomodation was not available for us, that there had been no attempt to contact us about the unavailability, and that we had been placed, instead, in the hostel. Since it was very late at night we were initially willing to stay at the hostel and prepaid $320 for 8 nights, however we soon discovered that we had been given a dirty, noisy, ensuite room that, bafflingly, was the same price as the self-contained "clean, quiet" cabin we thought we were renting. We were also disppointed to find that there was no safe, legal place to park our car at the hostel, since we had been assured us that there would be parking at the unit we agreed to rent. We stayed one night, realised that the situation was very different to the one that had been advertised, then checked out the next afternoon, a bare 19 hours after our check in. We expected to be charged two nights' stay ($88.00), since we checked out in the afternoon. Instead, we found that we were charged three nights' stay at the elevated rate of $50 per night, plus another $10.00 surcharge, and that there was no paperwork associated with the refund. It was done in cash. When I questioned the surcharges, which had NEVER been revealed to me by the managers of Balhouse apartments or the hostel manager I was told "that's we way things are". When we further questioned the charges the manager attempted to give us an extra $40 hush money "out of his own pocket", which we refused. I then contacted the owner of Balhouse apartments who washed her hands of the whole thing and told me she didn't own the hostel so she wouldn't do anything. Instead of taking the money and staying quiet, I am posting this review. Stay clear of this dirty, nasty place and also of Balhouse apartments.

this has to be the worst hostel in the whole of oz. there r two members of management, a semi grumpy/pleasant man during the week and the most evil woman to ever have walked the planet at the weekends. when he's here the hostel is semi clean, and run ok, but dont ask for any help with anything, its far too much trouble! at the weekend wen the witch is here she has a disabled lady with her who she leaves here to run the place while she goes shopping, and two very scabby dogs who run around, scratch and stink the place out. the hostel doesnt get cleaned at the weekends, the bins dont get emptied etc. now if like me you plan on staying there for a while, dont expect your room to ever be cleaned or to ever be offered clean bed sheets, i had to hunt them down in the middle of the night and hoover my own room. which i dont mind doing but it does say "serviced rooms". there is also no "Free pick up" as mentioned, there isnt even a bus there! there r also bars on the windows and cockroaches in the room, but apart from that its luxurious!! x

All we can say is Bed Bugs. Dont expect any help if you find them in your mattress - they won't want to know. And they won't refund your money.

This hostel won awards in 1996 1997, unfortunately I don't think it's been redecorated since and it certainly needs a clean. The TV's in the rooms show two fuzzy channels. The rooms themselves are dingy and dirty although the sheets were passable. The kitchen is adequate and unless you have en-suite the toilet facilities (especially for men) are filthy and inadequate. Our dorm was on the front of the hostel, next to the street and the windows had bars but didn't lock and there were no curtains. We stayed one night and moved on quickly.

THis is a good hostel for couples (as someone mentioned) no exciting decoration but clean and tidy. kitchen, laundry and bathroom facilities are good, just minutes away from the entertainment centre of brisbane, Fortitude Valley, so its easy to stumble home after a night out but the hostel is surprising quiet so you can get some sleep and nurse your hangover. TV in your room! Excellent! Atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, staff are helpful and the hostel is great value too, for a double room for a week its about $60/80 cheaper than other places in town. A good place for a long term stay.

Not the most liveliest place, but great anyway, especially if you have to be up at 7.30am!The rooms are serviced and the most you have in a dorm is 5 people. The kitchen is well equipped and you can sit outside on the veranda at night, they also have a laundry. The best thing about it is the price $14 a night if you stay a week and you even get a TV in every room!I would say this is ideal for couples and groups who want to make noise outside the hostel! The location is amazing, you are literally in the thick of things and it's a 5 minute stagger home from all the bars in the Valley.Be warned the Shamrock pub across the road is not the nicest of pubs,so ignore that if you're deciding whether to stay at Balmoral or not!Definitely one of the best I've stayed in so far.

This place is pretty chilled out, on the quiet side. The hostel manager is very friendly and helpful. Close to chinatown and maybe 10mins walk to city centre. Beware the cleaner talks too much, otherwise its a nice place to stay.
