okay the breakfast is extensive and the best i have had in europe, your security locker is outside the room, check the linen to make sure it is changed, plenty of fresh linen available. its in a nice part of town but the access from the tram is through a dark church graveyard....yikes at night i can tell you. tram access is free with the stay so you can really get around. i used it for the bus as well. transport to/from the airport is easy for you easyjetters. getting into france for the day for a spot of winetasting was a feature. the zoo well its a zoo. so okay but here is the grind internet access is way too expensive. if you are late checking out even a few minutes there is a fee....well the swiss are bankers...but the final thing like many european youth hostels there are a lot of eastern european, turkish and african "residents" who are clearly not hostellers. i got shoved in room full of them who obviously had not washed in a while and were too interested in my luggage. to their credit the staff changed my room to a room full of genuine travellers no trouble but hey guys....you are a youth hostel not a dosshouse.

Positives - they provide you with a card allowing free use of public transport in Basel; large breakfast included in the price; lockers available; lots of information available on local tourist attractions (if you haven't ever seen Roman ruins there is a town nearby that has quite a lot that you can wander through). Negatives - very institutional feel to the place (i.e. bunk beds, standard communal bathrooms; large school groups likely to be there); bathrooms of an average standard - could be cleaner.

Impersonal spaces, prepared to receive large groups - this is the typical youth hostel. The showers are outside the rooms and sometimes in different floors, they serve a very nice breakfast and have a lot of community facilities. The Bern hostel is not a bad place to stay, but i have to say that the Backpackers hostel is better!

Institutional HI hostel...with a bonus

In many ways, this is your typical HI hostel. The facilities are large and impersonal, with simple rooms, bunk-beds and common-area bathrooms. The rooms are reasonably clean, but a bit less so than is typical in the normally immaculate Swiss hostels. One inconvenience: lockers are located in the corridors, rather than inside the rooms. This place sees its share of large groups, and the common areas are not well suited to socializing -- they are too large and dispersed to encourage mingling. I was glad to have friends living in town, otherwise my social life in Basel would have been a bit lacking. The hostel is located in a quiet neighborhood along the river, conveniently to a tram line which connects to the train station. It can be a bit difficult to find at first, as the signposts are not consistent. The main bonus: your stay includes free use of Basel's transit system. This comes in handy, as many of the sights are a bit spread out. Providing transit is an excellent idea, one that more hostels should consider offering.
