was due to stay here for 2 nights but ended up staying for a week. this has to be the best hostel that we have been so far in oz. the rooms are the cleanest and the most comfortable that we have stayed in. very close to the fab beach. lovely pool also. we have had a wicked time here. wish we could stay longer. management is fanastic. stacey will help you out with whatever you need. these people know how to run a backpackers hostel. if you come to mission beach, stay here!!!!!

i stayed here last december for 3 nights. for a start DO NOT stay at mission beach for more than one night - there is nothing to do. the hostel was large with fairly average facilites although there were only 3 toilets and showers between 30 people. the lack of locks on doors was bad and the rooms were a little dirty and stale including bed bugs fitted as standard. the staff were friendly and helpful most of the time although the atmosphere was all about if your face fitted. i wouldn't stay here again.

The Beach Shack is without doubt the greatest hostel I've ever stayed at. Right on the beautiful sandy beach, with facilities that should be standard in all hostels (but aren't) like a free pool table and sea kayaks that you can borrow for free too (I'd recommend taking one over to Dunk Island but MAKE SURE YOU WEAR SUNSCREEN - I didn't!) No problems with the cleanliness - it was spotlessly clean when I was there. The hostel and staff make you feel like locks really wouldn't be used even if there were any - as everyone knows each other! And as for the BBQ - hell yeah!! Elliot makes the best apple crumble on the planet!! All in all a great place to stay. It's small, cosy, all the staff are super-friendly and really work hard to make your stay special... go there and see for yourself!!

This was the worst hostel I have ever stayed in. Our room was dirty and didn't have a lock on the door. We were staying in a double and had staff walk into our room twice without knocking. They brag about the jaccuzzi bath which didn't even work when we were there and was bloody filthy. ***EDITED TO COMPLY WITH BUG'S REVIEW GUIDELINES***. We stayed one night and left the next morning as early as we could. Do not stay in this place as it should be closed down!

The beachshack is just an wonderful place. Located about 20 meters from the beach. it only takes a 20 seconds walk to the ocean. This place just feels like being at home. No, it feels even better. This is for sure one of the best hostels I ever saw. Making friends was never easier and it felt really good to enjoy dinner with seven people instead of making your own. Everybody is very social, a thing what some other hostels lack. The free pooltable gives the perfect oppurtunity to discuss the adventures of the day with new and old friends and the the BYO bar is just in the perfect location: on the balcony. Perfect place to chill. Elliot does the best he can to book your tours and find the best deals, and he sure does find them. He tries as long as necessary to get the best valued trip. I really regret it that I can only travel for one month. I'm sure, taht if I would have had the time, I 'd spent more than the week I've spent here now. This truly is paradise. There's no doubt if I visit this place again. I sure will! And hope to see Elliot, and Noam, the friendly bottleshop and pickup-service driver, again when I do! I higly recommend this place! Perfect atmosphere, perfect staff...perfect paradise!

least favorite out of 5 hostels I stayed in

This was my least favorite hostel I stayed in while traveling north. They gave our room away the first night, due to "computer failure" so forced to stick 4 people into the only vacant 1 bed hotel in mission beach. Stayed at Mission beach the next night, and was even more disappointed about staying there than the hotel. The most uncomfortable beds I have ever slept on. I ended up sleeping on the floor (because it was more comfortable), then waking up to cock roaches everwhere. One a brighter note the night life at the shack was descent. The other people staying there were fun and had a good time with them. Overall impression is that there are 2 or 3 other hostels on Mission beach and if I went back to Mission beach I would go to another one before I went back to the Beach Shack.

I cannot stress enough how good the beach shack is! From the BBQ's- (done every other night $6) to the spa baths, yes SPA BATHS and a mix of some of the friendliest staff i've met, made this without doubt the best hostel i've stayed at in OZ! The rooms, although nothing magical, are spotlessly clean, have air-conditioning and the biggest room with en-suite! En-suite including spa bath! Ha don't even have one of those at home! Cooking facilities are also excellent, very clean, new and as with everything in the hostel, very homely! A very nice feature of this hostel is the TV room, which is very important considering Mission Beach's placement in the middle of the wet tropics! Has a really big TV with SKY, DVD, VHS the works and new dvd's each week to play with! Overall i really don't think that this hostel could get much better! As a place to relax in friendly comfortable surroundings, Beach Shack is number 1!

Ah man just go to this hostel if you are anywhere near it. The atmosphere is awesome, v.laid back, and there's always people around to chat to, and current managers Eliot and Nick are legends, who will be very nice and helpful to you and make you feel so at home. And the place itself is also pretty awesome, colourful and fresh, with a nice TV room and a pool like a big pond (but quite a bit cleaner) and a kitchen where there is all the cutlery and crockery you could dream of. Unlike any other hostel I've ever stayed at, obviously much better than all the rest, just go to Mission Beach and enjoy it.

This place is pretty nice - its just like a big house and is practically on the beach. You can hire bikes for free (although they are not the best quality) and the pool table is free too. Every other day they do a BBQ for $5 which is great and the apple crumble is the best! However, there are only 2 bathrooms for the whole place so if someone decides to have a bath there can be a long queue! Rooms weren't exactly spotless either.

What an amazing place, I almost have difficulty calling it a hostel. A beautiful private home turned into a haven for travelers is closer to the mark. Rooms from doubles to the large ten bed dorm upstairs (which was a blast to stay in, think slumber party with all your friends) an amazing kitchen, fabulous pool with waterfall, big screen satelite T.V. and the most important thing, giant jacuzzi bath tubs! The beach was a short walk across the street and in a few weeks they will be doing their own reef trips on a recently purchased and retrofitted boat. If the boat is run with the same attitude and homey feel that the hostel has, it will be one of the best reef trips around!Thank you Bob, Ina & Stacy for turning your beautiful home into a hostel for all of us to share with you, and for your generous hospitality.

This place is by no means a shack... it's the most beautiful house built by an achitect who decided to turn it into a hostel. I stayed here in September 2002 and was blown away by the place. The dorm rooms are a little cramped but the common areas are fantastic - big screen television, leather couches, dishwasher, whirlpool tub in the bathroom, balcony with pool table. The guy who built the place (Bob?) is probably the nicest guy I've ever met and really cares that everyone enjoys their stay. He puts together an amazing BBQ evey second night for $5 a person and everything is homemade... even the apple crumble that he bakes himself. The house is right across from the beach and a five minute walk to town. The pool is beautiful and there's an open air dining area in the back. Trust me, you will love this hostel. If you like kayaking, make sure to book a one day trip to Dunk Island with Coral Sea Kayaking (the front desk can book this for you) - it was a highlight of my trip.
