Very friendly staff, they helped us with booking a good diving tour (they don't push you at all!). Nice garden to sit and relax. Good facilities, clean showers and toilets.

First the good: amazing location - about a 10 minute walk to all the action, but located on a quiet residential street. Hostel very quiet at night, don't stay here if you are a party animal! Staff very friendly. The bad: everything costs extra here. Didn't realize you had to pay for air conditioning (was lead to believe included in the room price) - $1 for 3 hours seems a bit steep. Also, costs $7 to do a load of laundry ($3 each for wash/dry plus $1 for soap) - ridiculous! Also, internet is painfully slow in the hostel, but that doesn't stop them from charging for it (many other hostels in Cairns had free internet). Vending machines a rip off as well. One other gripe: the sheets and towels smelled! You know that sour smell that washcloths get after they've been used for far too long? Well that's what my pillow, sheets and towels smelled like. I thought that maybe this was a one-off thing, but when I returned a few nights later and stayed in a different room, same thing. Gross. Overall, an okay experience, but budget for the extras at this place. I won't stay here again.

This hostel is definitley recommended. They have very friendly staff. There is also a dinner included at the Sportsbar which is very good (unlike the Woolshed where most other hostels include dinner at!). The Hostel is not at the Esplanade but you can get there within about 10 minutes.

This hostel is excellent if you like quiet hostels (there's no TV). The rooms are so cheap- $36 for a double with a shower. The owner Barry is genuinely nice and very helpful. The facilities are good and the place is spotlessly clean. I would definitely go back again.

Best place and best people

The staff are what really made our stay special. Andre, Debbie and Barry know what customer service is all about. Their good advice is not limited to matters relating to the hostel alone and in our case resulted in the saving of a heap of money on new tyres for the truck. The bus trip to Lake Eacham and surrounds is well worth taking and the eccentric "Courtesy Bus Driver" is an absolute hoot, as is the nice bloke who owns the property where you go platypus spotting. Facilities are clean and comfortable and the hostel is within easy staggering distance of the city's many fine pubs. We will definitely be back!

I only stayed a night, but am gald I did. Unlike other Cairns hostels it wasn't (when I was there anywhere) full of drunk Brits, but a mix of nationalities. the staff were really friendly, and the accomodation was satisfactory (if not a little cramped!). the best thing about this hostel was that didn't pretend to be something it's not.
