I wrote the last review and stayed again at Dorset in January 2005. Had just as pleasant a time, they were doing some renovations but there was no noise or inconvenience. I had a room at the back of the house, which was lovely and private. Room was clean and nicely furnished (by backpacker standards), has lovely common room with cable TV, cat who is very friendly. A good choice if you want to chill, probably not the one if you expect to party hearty.

I stayed here in January 2003. It was very pleasant - just like the previous reviewer said, it is like staying in a private home. The garden is nice, the lounge area downstairs is big and comfortable, the showers worked and were clean. It is a bit of walk into the centre of Christchurch but nothing that a fit person can't manage. The compensation is that it is quiet and relaxing. I'm going to stay again in January 2005 and a repeat visit is the best recommendation!

It took us awhile to find this hostel because it was a bit of a walk from the city centre. Despite this, i'm glad i stayed here because it was such a cute little place. The staff were very friendly and the facilities were great. The internet was quite cheap and because it is only old house, the living area is furnished with couches, a billiard table, books and games. The showers were modern and clean and while the kitchen was small, it was clean and well equipped. There is a nice area to sit outside and eat dinner and the people who stay here are very nice. Security was great and it's a good place to catch a few 40 winks because it's a nice and quite hostel with big rooms. Overall it was kind of like staying at a friends house and was a nice change.

Found Dorset to be very tidy, clean and comfortable. The roaring fire (and accompanying Squeek the cat) were great. We came back to town and returned twice! A walk to town and to Hagley Park. No SKY, but free pool. Off-street parking, nice showers, and no bunks. Don't know what currency the rooms are quoted above but we stayed there July 2003 for NZ$22 in a dorm room.

Very comfortable, very well decorated, services quite expensive (laundry, email...). Staff pleasant, except for the proprietor, who is absolutely odious. Despite all the fine qualities of this place, the attitude and behavior of this individual would discourage me from staying there again.
