Flinders backpackers One of the two lifts in the 10 floor building is out of service for a total of 18 months showing lack of priorities. I arrived at this hostel and paid ahead as hostels always pressure you to by getting annoyed if you book day to day, however they also have a strict no refund policy. I had a sprained foot which wasn't improving and called an advice line. The manager walked past and saw my leg and said it was very serious as her partner had had the same issue and almost lost his leg and that I should go to hospital. I was going to take an uber and was told it wasn't necessary. I was feverish and my foot was badly swollen and therefore I could only wear flip flops. I stood around ages to wait for information and wasn't helped much. I went outside to find it was pouring down and slippery. I had forgotten to take my my hospital report with me and was sure I left it in my room when I went up. The hospital really needed to know my previous treatment in New Zealand. I called and asked if they could go to my room and find it and fax it over. They said it wasn't there leaving me worried that I was lost but there wasn't anything I could do about it. The hospital did their best without the information. I had to be kept in. I wasn't expecting this or even advised that it was a possibility. I begged the hospital to send a few things over from my room with a taxi. Apparently they have never sent anything before. They just couldn't be bothered. I really couldn't believe that they couldn't go in my room and bring me a few items and then I order an uber and meet it outside. I also complained that they advised me to take the tram instead of a cab as going to the hospital in an emergency is the most justified time to take one. He said he had told me the day before to do so however the manager and the woman had convinced me it was unnecessary and that the tram goes almost door to door. However it involved crossing slippery main roads and was a lot of walking for someone with a leg infection. So this is them trying to save me 9 dollars, but I was charged for 3 nights I was in hospital. When I returned after a 6 am last treatment and was exhausted and had over 12 hours till my night flight, I asked if I could sleep a little in my room. The room had been empty therefore all my things had remained as they were apart from when my friend went in the following night and brought me some of my belongings to the hospital. The first thing I saw was the hospital report on the floor. There were no other papers. They just lied about going in and caused me extra stress for nothing. I was told I can sleep in the cinema. However there were been bag chairs which you couldn't lie across, no pillows to prop leg up it was to stop people getting to comfortable when the other hostel had a quiet room full of sofas and armchairs and beanbags especially so that people could rest after checkout. There were no couches and sofas in the common area apart from padded stools with no armrests. Not a cosy hostel at all. I really needed sleep before my 24 hour flight which ended up including a 17 hour delay. I asked the manager about the three nights I had paid for as now I cared because I wasn't even allowed to sleep in the empty room on a floor which had been cleared for maintenance. No one would have been willing to pack my things anyway and my hospital stay wasn't expected, but the manager said no. She said I had my things in the room and hadn't packed them up. She was smug and unsympathetic. I also mentioned that they should advise people to take a car to hospital in such circumstances which she replied it was my choice and sarcastically added she was glad I was feeling better- when I was so clearly in pain- and smirked and waltzed off. Very rich to convince me otherwise and when I suffer the consequences say it was my choice. I have never experienced such a lack of humanity in a hostel. I was ill abroad and ending my trip- most people's worst nightmare. A bit of empathy would have been appreciated. I still couldn't believe I wasn't allowed to sleep because it was past checkout after paying for 3 nights I hadn't used.

One of the better budget options in Mebourne

This is a great little hostel tucked into the corner of Elizabeth of Flinders Lane. It has a fantastic location - a few minutes stroll to Flinders Street Station, Federation Square and the Town Hall, close to twenty-four hour McDonalds and pizza places and supermarkets, with trams running along Flinders Street and Elizabeth Street. It's been recently decorated and has some interesting murals on the walls. Rooms are clean and well-maintained, with extremely comfortable beds and fresh bedlinen. (Although fellow shorties beware - these beds are high!) It has a good atmosphere - lots of people around, basic free breakfasts (toast and cereal), TVs, communal areas, things like that. The seating can be a little run down (there were tears in most of the couches), but is quite comfortable. There are a few downsides - due to the presence of two bars, including a twenty-four hour one, it can be quite noisy, and the noise filters up when you're trying to sleep. And I had quite a few issues with the bathrooms - late at night, they can be positively disgusting and incredibly unhygienic, and the showers aren't brilliant. (To be fair, I've yet to find a hostel with decent showers.) Still, they're minor downsides. Probably the best option if you have $20 or less a night. If I was restricted to the same budget as I was last time, I'd stay here without hesitation.

Stayed here in an ensuite room for 3 weeks in Feb 2007. The staff here couldnt be more helpful and friendly - everything i needed was sorted out for me. I couldnt be more grateful. There is a 24hr bar for residents "the joint bar", and another bar "the green room" in the basement. You are in a perfect location in the CBD - right next to the major tram lines, and there is a 24hr pizza place, 24hr Coles supermarket, 24hr Subway, and 24hr Mc Donalds within meters of your doorstep. There is also a bottle shop and an ATM at the entrance to the Hostel. The internet is pretty good here, however you can get much cheaper at the cafes at the other end of elizabeth st near the Q.V markets, and the kitchen was well equipped and pretty clean most of the time - having a complete blitz each sunday. There are bbq's here each friday - depending on the weather, and bands play here a lot. The Joint bar also has a great balcony over-looking Elizabeth St and flinders Station. The rooms are pretty clean (and im fussy!) but are starting to look slightly run down - dust, marks on walls, bleach stains on carpets etc, but if you want somewhere clean then you will be fine here. I didnt see the shared bathrooms while i was here so i cant comment on them. I used one of the 2 laundry facilities a few times while i was there and theyre pretty good value for money at $2 for a wash and $1 for the dryer - you can even buy 1-wash bags of detergent at reception for 60c which is cool. You have a swipe card system for your room, and you can only access the floors of this hostel where the rooms are if you have a card to swipe in the lift, or at the access doors on the stairs. At night you also have to use your card to enter the building so it is pretty secure. There are also lockers available (quite cheap) just off reception if needed. I would have no problem staying here again!

This hostel was the perfect base for my stay in Melbourne, I found that the night staff were very friendly and the daytime ones perfectly alright. I ended up becoming good friends with a couple of them. The hostel is not exactly packed with facilities but it's clean and well maintained and there's always someone about who's up for a laugh(piss-up)! It's location is perfect and the bar on level one is trendy and relatively inexpensive. I disagree with people that say this hostel has no atmosphere because I found the complete opposite in the month and a half that I stayed here.

The central location of Flinders Station Backpackers is definitely worth the price. I paid for a week in a 4-bed dorm and it only cost A$118. Flinder Street Station is half a block down the street, where you can catch most trains and trams, including the free City Circle tram that takes you around the city. Federation Square is a block away. A Coles Supermarket is conveniently located across the street. There aren't really many restaurants close by, unless you take a 10 minute walk over to Chinatown. The hostel itself is decent but not overly impressive. My particular dorm room reeked - the smell was of a hobo who hadn't bathed for months. I resorted to buying a can of air freshener and spraying the room down each time I entered. There are individual lockers for you to padlock your gear. Being that I stayed in the beginning of winter (late May/early June), the rooms can get quite chilly. You must also bring your keycard everywhere you go as you cannot access facilities like the bathroom or elevator without it. The kitchen, located next to the lounge on the 3rd floor, is spacious and clean, with a walk-in fridge for all your groceries. There is also a TV there so you don't get bored eating your meals. There is only one lounge, located on the 3rd floor, with a main TV on one end of the room and another TV hanging from the corner in the other. Depending on the type of person you are, the lounge could be fun and inviting or a nuisance. Being that it is the only lounge, most backpackers congregate here and is a convenient place to meet people. Everyone also seems to get immersed into whatever is on TV, so everyone usually shares a good laugh together. However, being that it is the only lounge, it may be difficult getting peace and quiet to yourself when you want a space to chill. Also, it is a smoker's lounge, so if you don't smoke or don't want your clothes smelling of nicotine there really isn't anywhere else to relax besides the kitchen. The dryers in the laundry rooms are terrible - my laundry had to be dried 3 times, which was costly and time-consuming. Reception is located in the bar on the 1st floor (actually, it IS the bar) above a liquor and wine bottle shop on the ground level. I didn't find the staff to be terribly friendly and were not keen on answering questions. When the bar is busy, it may be a few minutes before you can get someone to assist you, and when you do, you have to shout your questions to them. The location and price were great, but the hostel itself could do with a few improvements.

I give this place 3 stars because it got everything you need: big kitchen (and clean), TV room and small dorms. The lockers on each room are fantastic! You can store all your stuff there! The TV room is very, very un-cosy. big TL-lights, stupid computer games (never used) and no colours at all. It's too big. The other TV in the kitchen (!!) is very boring as well. But: it's very well located, in the hart of the city, it is cheap, a bottle shop is in the hostel, and a 24 hour supermarket is located 1 minute from the hostel! That makes sence!

I have only moved into the hostel today and unfortunately I am committed to a week there. It has the worst beds in the world, the matress is paper thin and therefore the slats stick up into your back when you lay down. My floor smells of stale lemons and very stale ciggie smoke. The kitchen is shut between 10am and 11.15am, only the prime time for getting breakfast, for cleaning. It seems to be very backpacker unfriendly, as for being budget, it sure is that. And flithy, stinky and uncomfortable too! It has a good location but this hardly makes up for the squalor that you have to live in, would NEVER choose to come back here again!

The only reason I rated this two stars was for the location and the price, everything else is pretty awful. I haven't had hot water since I arrived 10 days ago and our room hasn't been cleaned at all. There is a large smoke filled, dirty, common room with two TV's competing to be heard on different channels!!! There is not enough storage space, seats or utensils for the amount of people staying here. The internet is constantly broken, hence the reason I am writing this somewhere else. Apart from that it's great!!! Have a good trip!
