This is what a hostel should be like! We stayed in a double ensuite and found this hostel to be the best one we've experienced! The room is nice, clean and roomy. Kitchen is perfect and filled with utensils, big plus for the small jars filled with spices!! It's located just 10min away from Cathedral square, close enough to walk but also far enough from the noise. The rooms are built in a square with a nice garden in the middle, a few benches here and there plus the BBQ area makes this a great place to hang out in....a perfect garden in the garden city!

Foley Towers is the founding member of BBH and as a result knows how to go about making your stay an experience rather than just an overnight stop. The place is geared up for the independent traveller (the ones who can be bothered to to make conversation with other people and not wait to be spoon fed and told what to do by staff) Yes it is bigger than some of the other backpackers but it doesn't feel like that since the hostel is spaced around 2 court yards and fantastic gardens. No T.V means people aren't sitting around staring at the wall and therfore you are drawn into conversation. A great place to stay and the staff are always helpful and friendly!

Just came back from NZ, and was looking at what other people wrote about my favourite hostels over there. What the hell is that person from "bland and boring" talking about. I really enjoyed my stay at Foley, they were the reason I became a BBH member, the best decision (they are the better hostels over there). The staff is (super)friendly, it's clean, the garden is brilliant, and about meeting people.....that is mostly up to yourself, I had good fun. So going to Christchurch ....Choose Foley and you can't go wrong!

Do not know where the previous reviewer can have stayed as i've been there on several occassions now and have met heaps of people in the process, i think sometimes we bring bad experiences in hostels on ourselves!! it's spotlessly clean and very well located, friendliest staff in NZ so far (which is saying something as quite a lot of NZ hostels are top notch!!)

Bland and boring

Foley Towers is located on the periphery of the Christchurch city center, in a non-descript commercial/residential area of town. If arriving by bus, expect a 10-15 walk from the bus station. Dorm facilities vary, including some small motel-style rooms that face a common courtyard, as well as a converted old house that features bunk-bed equipped rooms. (If you are looking for towers looming above, you won't find them.) Despite the owner's objections in his self-serving commentary below, "sprawling" is a reasonably accurate description. There is a outdoor common area with barbeque equipment. In addition, there is a decent sized kitchen for self-caterers and a common room. Hygiene was pretty good, fairly standard for the level that seems to prevail in ChCh hostels, which is to say is somewhat below what is typical thoughout the rest of NZ. If my time as a backpacker counts for anything, the opportunity to meet people can make all the difference for one's travel experience, and this is a weak point for Foley Towers. The poorly laid-out common area seems to encourage dead silence rather than conversation, and after staying there on two occasions, I was struck by what is one of the most anti-social hostels in which I have ever stayed -- at least 20 people in a common area, yet you could practically hear a pin drop. Having exchanged the usual anecdotes with backpackers I met while traveling throughout NZ, my experience at Foley Towers seems to have been the norm, not the exception. Foley Towers is far from horrible, but not particularly outstanding in any category, particularly with the disappointing social scene. Although it isn't a bad place to stay, there is nothing noteworthy here that would either warrant a particularly high rating or otherwise make this a must-stay.

We stayed in a double, ensuite room. The room was large and clean with ensuite shower as well as a toilet. Lovely courtyard garden. Kitchen can be accessed during the night with your key. Don't panic like we did when you here a fire siren, there is a fire station a few doors down. Quiet during the night. Friendly reception staff. Walking distance to shops, internet cafes and Cathedral Square.
