The above reviews say it all - this place is really very good. In escaping Brisbane for two nights, I had a relaxing break and appreciated everything in my stay - the other travellers I met, the facilities, the vibe, owners and the laid back pace of Hervey Bay. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and am already looking forward to heading up the highway to stay with the Friendly folk again.

We chilled out here for a few days. The room was nice and the bed was EXCELLENT!! Not your normal crap. The hostel is split up into flats so there is only 7 or 8 of you sharing the kitchen, bathroom, TV area which is nice. It is a perfect place just to relax and get to know the other BPs staying there. I had a look into the dorm rooms, no bunk beds, little tables with lamps so no strip light coming on at 4am! The only problem is paying for the aircon per night.

I hate the heat, so my quibble about the lack of aircon probably isn't one that most people would make. The owners were extremely helpful and gave me the lowdown on all the various Fraser Island tours running from Hervey Bay. The dorms had proper beds and plenty of space, and the kitchen was in good condition. I found the place to be quiet, which might not be everyone's cup of tea but there are party hostels that cater for that type of crowd. I would stay here again (in cooler weather).

I dont tend to post up reviews but this place has GOT to be mentioned. i have stayed in over 50 hostels in the last 3 years in various parts of the world and this one is best best by a country MILE. the beds are spotless its been refurbished lately and the bathrooms are spotless, a BIG plus. the apartment style layout is perfect for getting to know fellow trvellers the hosts gary and sherylle are simply OUTSTANDING, and exceptionally helpful. they clearly were not in it to make as much money as possible, but they run the hostel out of the love of it and they strive to make your stay as good as possible. its very close to the main town they wil pick you up off the greyhound bus if you call ahead free breakfast if you book a tour with them. just what the belly ordered at 6am when youre off to frasier island. i wish all hostels would take a leaf out this places book. it really is a friendly hostel, and the best one ive stayed in bar NONE. keep up the great work!

Like the poster below, I don't often feel compelled to write reviews of places I've stayed at, but I'll make an exception in this case. Whether you're coming back from or going to Fraser, or simply passing through Hervey Bay, you absolutely must stay at the Friendly Hostel (or, more accurately, the Super-Friendly Hostel). Proper beds with lovely snuggly duvets, spotlessly clean units and a great location. And Sheryle and Garry are so incredibly helpful it feels like having your Mum and Dad around to sort stuff out for you (only S & G are much cooler and - I should add - younger too :-)). To sum up - Carlsberg don't actually make hostels, but if they did, they'd be just like this one....

In 3 years of travelling I have never felt that I needed to write one of these reviews - although I read them all of the time, but this hostel was so special I just had to. From being picked up at the bus when I called (and they knew my name when I called before I said who I was), Garry carried my heavy bag up the stairs for me, I was shown where everything was including the emergency exits, and the Free tea and coffee (most important after an all night bus!), everything is of hotel quality, the beds were the best with great sheets (not those horrible thin, grey things you get every where else - if you get sheets at all). The view of the ocean from the back balcony was amazing and sitting there with a glass of wine, watching the sunset, the flying foxes and lorikeets fly over was just out of this world. Everything was spotless and Sheryle and Garry were available into the evening when I noticed everyone else around was in total darkness. It was nice to have a guest phone available 24hours a day with an incoming number provided - it meant my family could call me when it was convenient to them without having to pay heaps for cell phone calls. They have thought of everything at the friendly and are really there to help you in every way. And they also gave me great advice on my Fraser tour. I just wished I had known about them before booking my Whitsunday trip because that was a nightmare and they know all of the boats up there - I would certainly have trusted them to recommend something much better for me. I could rave about this hostel all night but if you are thinking of going to Hervey Bay - just stay there - there is no way you could regret it, unless you are looking for somewhere noisy, disruptive, and dirty beacuse this hostel is the complete opposite, clean friendly and nice and peaceful.

When all of our wallets and purse was stolen from Billabong we stayed here after Fraser Island and it was very much better. The staff is nicer and more friendly and the king size double bed is nicer and the hostel is cleaner. The kitchen has more things to cook in. Also they took us to the bus stop the next morning and our wallet was not stolen here - it has much more security.

I'm 61 years old woman who has never experienced a back-packers hostel until now. What a great "first time" experience. My friend and I had our own room which was clean and comfortable with good bedding and linen. The thing that impressed was the continuing "hands on" service from Gary and Sheryl. Nothing was too much trouble, including stopping for a friendly chat. ALL the international back-packers we met assured us this was not a typical hostel experience. "This is awesome" was a phrase we heard from many young people. We shared the little cottage with really interesting strangers. On the balcony (complete with bbq) we shared great conversation, and on our last night was entertained by a young man from the UK with guitar and song. Loved the whole experience, it was the most memorable part of our Queensland holiday. Don't let the young ones have all the fun!

The friendly hostel was hands down the best hostel Ive stayed in ever, the rooms are so homely and to have a kitchen and lounge almost to yourself was absoloutely great. Í'm almost gutted I stumbled accross it so early in my trip as I know nothing will beat it. The staff are soo friendly, and Coral and Heather went out of their way to mother me and make me feel at home! That combined with easily booking Fraser and Whitsunday trips through them made this the best hostel ever.

The Friendly Hostel was so good, it was nice to be able to go out and party hard - it is walking distance to all of the hot bars - and know that when you get back you are not going to have someone jump on top of you - 'cos there's no bunks! The staff are fantastic and a good laugh - you can relax and feel right at home. The whole place is absolutely spotless and the service and facilities faultless. They gave the best advice on tours that I have had throughout the whole of the East coast and even had fabulous tips on what to do around Hervey Bay. I ended up staying for a week when I had only expected to stay a day becuase I had heard so many bad things about Hervey Bay - ask them about Tom's aboriginal tour - cheap and the best tour I have done anywhere in Australia. Keep up the good work guys - and Lonely Planet sucks!!

After spending a lot of time (and money) on inferior accommodation along the East coast, we stumbled upon the Friendly hostel almost by accident - it was one of many in the Lonely Planet. We were in luck though! Here was a hostel with proper sized beds, which you didn't have to make yourself, a large, clean kitchen shared between a maximum of six people, and staff who were truly friendly and knew virtually everything there was to know about Fraser Island. Absolutely the best value for money and our most comfortable stay on the East coast.

We had an absolutely excellent time at the Friendly Hostel. It was immaculately clean (kitchen, living area, bathroom and bedrooms), very homely and fantastic value for money. The owners Sheryl and Garry are absolutely lovely too - they bent over backwards to help us out - booking all sorts of stuff for us and trying to give us discounts on tours etc compared to booking direct. They even booked our trains for us to save us using a payphone (which we'd already paid for in Brisbane, so they got nothing out of at all) and gave us a free beer while because we were in their office for that long. The advice they gave us on tours etc was also very useful - they had done all the Fraser Island ones themselves so could compare impartially (the one we went for was excellent, which they rated as the best), and had also done cruises etc in the Whitsundays so could offer advice on these too. They even looked out for us when we were thinking of booking our scuba diving (with a company we suggested to them) - they insisted on making sure it was a reputable company by contacting the Cairns coastguard first! Absolutely outstanding service. We would recommend this hostel to anyone. It was THE best we stayed in during our trip to Australia.

We have just had a fantastic time at "the Friendly". It is so much like being at home, everything is there down to having an iron and ironing board. We even borrowed a mixer and baking pans so we could make a cake in the real oven. There are huge lockers for each person in the dorms (that only have 3 people and real beds with fabulous mattresses) and you can lock both your room and your little apartment so security is really good. If you just want to chill out for a few days this is the place to do it. It was raining while we were there so we waited a few days to go to Fraser (the booking service and information you are given here is second to none as well) there is a great selection of DVD movies for hire and with our cake, a glass of white and a good movie - we really didn't need anything else! The hostel is spotless and the staff terrific and soooo helpful. We'll definitely be staying here again and would recommend it to everyone.

I went to the Friendly Hostel and thought it was lovely. It is very small with a homely atmosphere. It is very clean with excellent facilities and NO bunk beds! It has a fab verandah and the rooms are in individual units so you feel it is a flat share rather than hostel.
