Stayed here in May 2008, what a great experience to stay in a building with such character!! Great location, great building, excellent atmosphere at the hostel bar and restaurant. Only downsides were - tiny kitchen which wasn't too clean (maybe they want you to use the restaurant!) and its a bit noisy due to the construction of the building, however they are really strict about no noise after 11.30pm, so its really not a major problem.

We stayed there in June 2006, and loved it. The hostel is right next to the main bus station, great for catching the greyhounds, or getting dropped off. Although its a bit of a steep hill to get up to the hostel, its worth it. The hostel is an amazing old building, with a number of extentions for extra bedrooms, conference facilities etc. The staff (like most YHA`s) were lovely. They booked us in without any fuss and helped with things like change for the phones etc etc. The room was small, but clean and well maintained. The beds were fine, but a bit squeaky!! It was raining while we were there, so we ate at the hostel.. Great food, and cheaper than anything you are going to get in Noosa. We went canoeing for a few days and it was fine to leave our bags. The staff even arranged for us to go surfing at late notice. All in all, very impressed by the hostel. Its just what you expect from a YHA!

Great hostel in the heart of Noosa, just a hop skip, and a very steep jump from the bus station and Hasting Street. Once you make it to the top of the steep driveway you will be rewarded with a friendly welcome, and a little bar that sells cheap drinks. The hostel is well maintained, however, the open weatherboard buildings mean you can hear everything that goes on in the next room. Ear plugs are recommended. Still worth the stay. Make sure you have the icecream from Massimo's on Hastings St, and an investment in a seafood basket from the Fish Shop is well worth the spend.

A lovely old building in a great location. It has charm and atmosphere. If you are looking for a sterile soundproof impersonal hostel .. look elsewhere. Sure there are limitations ... no electric points in several rooms inconvienient if you want to charge batteries. The timber structure can make it a noisy building but bar, television & pool areas are closed off at 11pm. Would like to see lockers in the rooms & ladders for all the bunks. That said it is a friendly hostel in a great location. I will return

I have stayed here twice now and rate this as the best hostel in Oz. Its in a beatiful building right in the town (which a lot aren't). Its clean and the kitchen, bathroom etc are excellent. Noosa has to be one of the nicest places to go to on the coast. You will love it!!

well situated from the bus stop, shops and the beach, really nice building and good food at the bar but that's where the praises stop!!! we were in room 15, just by the pub that "shuts when there are no more people around"!!! (as I was told by a staff member...no comment!), then by the tv room where you are supposed to turn the tv off at 11pm and NOT play the piano... but some people really don't give a s*** about other guests! the kitchen was REALLY dirty, even at breakfast (YHA are supposed to clean their kitchen at night... but apparently they forgot! too much partying???) and the dining area was not convenient, really narrow and right by some bedrooms!!! and the supermarket is quite far away from the hostel, about 20/30 mn hilly walk... bathrooms were ok, though I had the pleasure to find an empty bottle of wine in one of them... deposit for the key and for your kitchen set: $10 each, crappy bodyboards: $50!!!! beds were not that great and my friend didn't have any ladder to climb on the top bunk bed: funny at first, but soon annoying! so pretty bad YHA in the overall (first time ever I have been disappointed by a YHA) . Really good thing though is the meeting night on your first day of arrival: it helps you meeting people and have a chat! but it's not enough to have a good stay...

Location good - near Hastings st, beach etc. Expensive - paid $75 for double. Sleep is certainly a luxury here as it's very noisy. Small rooms. Staff overworked and stressed easily (not their fault). Moved to hotel in Hastings st for about same price - much better!

If you don't like your steriotypical YHA then you will probably like this place. It's situated in 2 lovely old buildings which are full of character. We stayed in the back building which was quiet at night. The bar is great and attracts a mixture of people (not just 18 year olds). Because the buildings are old and wooden, don't expect them to be 100% spotless, but they are as clean as they can be.

It was great to get off the bus and find the hostel so close i.e. across the road. Up a very steep hill but that was OK. The welcome evening on the first night was very useful. I was unlucky enough to get room 15 which I see was mentioned elsewhere and it was absolutely dreadful, not least because I had to endure 3 nights of pool-playing and a blaring TV right by my head until gone 11 p.m., followed by other residents sitting outside the room either on the adjacent veranda or in the garden talking loudly way in to the night. There was no way of cutting out the sound, as one of the windows had an open grille for ventilation, and having 4 other windows, although opaque, meant that there was a major light pollution problem. This was exascerbated on 2 nights when the rope lights hanging on the veranda were left on after the bar closed, so there were green lights flashing on and off throughout the night. To just about finish me off the windows faced east and therefore as the sun rose the room was filled with light from early morning. And there were no en suite facilities which was scary at night as there was no security and there was a long walk round the outside of the central bar and sitting room area to get to the bathroom. The sitting room was pleasant but not very cosy, the food was reasonably priced and very good (free wine if you ordered before 6pm) but the staff were not very friendly, particularly on reception. They seemed very over-worked and easily irritated. Definitely a place for people who don't mind if they get very little sleep. although I did hear that the rooms in the building next to the kitchen were much better. Noosa Heads was lovely, very smart, lots to do, great market at Eumundi on Wednesdays and Saturdays, really helpful tourist information place at the end of Hastings Street. Staying at Halse Lodge was not a great experience which is a shame as it is such an attractive building. I thought in view of the poor facilities that it was very expensive. The best part of the experience was meeting some lovely friendly people, several of them Australians. Relieved to have left when I did as they were showing a rugby match in the bar that night, starting at 10.30 p.m. I wonder how much sleep they got in room 15 that night??!!

Plus: close to bus terminal; pleasant historic house and grounds; friendly staff. Minus: If your bed is in the original historic house, don't expect to get much sleep. Putting bedrooms 5 yards away from a licensed bar with music till 11pm and chatter till midnight, all in a building with single skin timber walls and open ventilators, doesn't really work. Kitchen & dining area is cramped. NB Don't expect to get anything cheap in the nearby trendy shopping street. The ordinary folks' shops are over the hill 1km away.

the halse lodge is a lovely old fashioned building with lovely grounds. the inside is very attractive too and the facilities good. however the hostel is very noisy, the staff blasting the radio from reception from 6:45am onwards doesn't help either. there is also a bar in the hostel which means you aren't allowed to bring any alcohol of your own onto the grounds at all. i just found this place riddled with rules and rather irratating on the whole. which is a shame as it could be such a great hostel.

My stay in Noosa Heads was excellent. YHA Hostel rep met the bus and directed people up the hill to the hostel. That night there was a welcome meeting and free drink for new people to tell us about the hostel and activities in Noosa. There is a very nice common area with couches and tables. An on site bar and restaurant offers good meals and drink; not necessarily cheap but very good by Noosa standards. The 4 bed dorm was quite small but I met some fabulous people so I didn't mind the cramped quarters. Showers and toilets were clean and modern. The kitchen can get really busy and you have to pay a deposit for a cutlery/plate set which is a bit annoying. Overall, Noosa is a beautiful area, great beach and national park, decent shopping and restuarants. Also, Be sure to catch the free bus to Australia Zoo. The YHA topped-off a great visit.

The YHA is opposite the bus terminal and just 5 mins from the main beach and hastings street. Be prepered to pay big money here though $23 with yha dicount, bar and resturant are also expensive, dorms are ok, although for $23 would have liked cutains so the sun dosn't shine on you from 6am and a 4 bed dorm only had 2 lockers!!! Kicthen was small and eating area even smaller so that was a let down for the YHA. If you stay here theres a nice atmopshere and staff are friendly but remember to bring eye patches and ear plugs, as you can hear every footstep and door closing.

Good hostel, noisy room

The Halse Lodge YHA is in a lovely old wooden building, with a really nice lounge area, it's own bar (small, but friendly), a small cafe and just up the road a bit from the main street in Noosa Heads, making it an ideal location. The only problem with it was that we had room number 15 which backs onto the lounge area on one side and the tv room on another wall - with all the walls being made of wood, the sound travels and we could hear people racking up the pool table and watching tv until quite late at night - so ask for another room if possible. If we'd have had another room though (were only there for 1 night) it would've been great!!

Nice location but found my dorm very stuffy at night as no a/c & a broken fan. You can hear every step around the hostel as the floors are wooden & people were stompinga round from 5am. Kitchen rubbish, have to pay $10 for your crockery/cutlery & have to keep in dorm otherwise it gets pinched! Kitchen very busy & not particulary clean either. Probably nicer/cleaner places to stay in Noosa.

In Noosa this hostel was in by far the best location, very near the National Park, beach and shops. The staff were friendly, rooms and kitchen clean, and you could borrow surf boards and boogie boards for free. It does get booked up quickly though, so should book ahead.

Koalas in the trees outside my room

I had the best time in Noosa and Halse Lodge was a big contributor to that. The building is a beautiful, turn of the century mansion with lots of character: huge wrap-around balconies with lots of comfy chairs, hardwood floors and cozy four bed dorms. My room had French doors that opened onto the balcony, and although the rooms are pretty tiny, there's built-in shelves for your stuff. There were even koalas in the trees around the property. The location is the best in Noosa... three minutes from the beach and the shopping/restaurant strip. The bathrooms were clean and there's a restaurant on-site that served the most amazing curries. The communal kitchen is in a separate building and had all the standard necessities. There's lockers, washing facilities, a ping pong table, internet terminals and a BBQ once a week. There's also a bar but it doesn't get too crazy at night - you'll sleep well.
