My time in this hostel was the happiest time I spent in Australia. Donna and Rick the new Hostel Owners did everything in their power to find me work and worked tirelessly to ensure we had work at all times. They also asked about our wellbeing and it felt like we had substitute parents. Nothing was ever too much trouble. They took us on free excursions to the beach and waterfalls. Every room has its own airconditioner, refridgerator, fan and TV. The Theme nights were a feature with Halloween night being the best. Many Backpackers find it so hard to leave the Hostel and some stay here for 6 months or more. If I need the money I'll be back............ :D

 The previous review has this hostel down to a tee. It's disgusting. Do not under any circumstances stay here, or at the walk about motel (its run by the same guy). Rooms are small and dirty with a foam mattress, Kitchen is disgusting and I reckon disease ridden, nobody washes after using dishes etc. Toilets/shower areas are the worst ever you feel more dirty leaving them than you did going in. The owner is the only staff member really, don't expect any help or advice about your travels because he's only there for about 2 hours per day, the rest of the time the hostel is unmanned and open to any old tom dick or harry. You might be lucky to get a job on a banana farm, I would strongly recommend that you do not go. Do fruitpicking by all means just stay away from the banana's and the banana farms, they are as poorly run as the disgusting hostel. Innisfail is small whith nothing to do and staying in that hostel didn't help the situation either. Worst hostel ever, im not one for writing reviews but I felt I had to on this occasion to save other people from going here. ALSO - Don't stay at codge lodge, thats next door and looks just as bad, don't be fooled by the pictures. Hope you don't go here. UPDATE to reply to the newest poster. I stumbled across this review purly by accident, it made me smile. What a hell hole Innisfail was. Cyclone Larry hit it head on in (March?) 06 while I was in Cairns. By all accounts the place was wiped off the map - good bye banana farms! I hope Backpackers retreat blew away too scum hole of a dive. Maybe it was re-built and is better, but I wouldn't chance it. I have images of this place I would be willing to e-mail.

I don't normally write reviews either, but I had to object to the two below. I worked there from february to march 2006, and have brought back some of my best memories. Now yes, the owner is a complete moron, and yes the sister hostel 'walkabout' is a hell hole, but the 'backpackers retreat' is a total contrast. Clean rooms with a clean pool that is a total god send after hours on a banana farm. It made the work bearable, especially with the amazing friends you'll make as well. If you need to work, I can't recommend anywhere higher. The owner WILL get you work, and if you don't like it at a certain farm then he will quickly offer you somewhere else. I stuck it out on the same farm for 5 weeks, and it was a very rewarding lifestyle. The first week was hell, but once your body adjusts, you'll find muscles you never had, and you actually finish the day with enough energy to kick back watch some tv or lounge in the pool with some equally knackered mates. The backpackers retreat is nice, well decorated, open plan accommodation, and you couldn't ask for a better working hostel. Spitting distance from Innisfail centre, and with its infamous club 'Rumours', what more could you want? The hostel also comes with a minibus that you can take out on weekends if you can get the bus full (which isn't usually a problem!), and head down to the golden hole, the beach or even the bizarre crocodile farm. The best place to get you through the work, and to meet people that hate the work just as much as you. :D

The Worst Hostel I've Ever Stayed In

Every single thing

Its better than picking bananas

This is by far and away the worst hostel I have ever stayed in. I arrived on a Friday night hoping to stay for a month, meet some people and make some money from banana picking but only stayed 4 nights such was the horrendous state of this hostel. To start with the room hadn't been cleaned after the previous occupants left, there was a hole in the floor, the room did have a fridge but it was disusting and rusty but at least it meant I didn't have to leave food in the communal fridges for everyone to help themselves to. The mattresses are made of foam and form to the shape of your body after lying on them and provide no comfort at all. My roommate broke the slats on his bed just by lying on it too long. There is no security at all and the door is left open all night for anybody to just wander in off the street- there were horror stories of knife attacks. There were no locks on the toilet or shower doors, only 6 showers for 60 guests and two of the showers didnt even have a lightbulb in them. There is a sign in the kitchen asking guest to clean up their dishes after themselves but no-one did so the stinking dishes piled up in both sinks as the flies had a field day with all the unfinished food. So unhygenic. Apparently people have stayed there for 3 months without paying. The owners are never around so it is impossible to ask them anything or find out any information. They take your passport from you so you don't escape without paying and when we left, we had a hard time getting them back The only thing that kept me sane was the fact that the owners wife gave us a tv for our room (more like a prison cell really) so we didnt have to go outside and face the hideousness of the common areas. It does have a pool which I guess is something but no pool table and no glasses after some of the other guests decided to break them all in their drunkenness. And then there is the banana picking itself... this is the only thing that could possibly make this hostel seem good. I wouldnt wish banana humping on my worst enemy. I spoke to some of the locals while out in the banana paddocks and apparently this is 'the best hostel in town' so I'd hate to see what the others are like. If your thinking of banana picking don't do it unless you want to cause yourself serious back injury. If your thinking of going to Innisfail, don't there is nothing there! And if you have no choice but to go to Innisfail, whatever you do, dont stay at the Backpackers Retreat!!!

Firstly, this is not a first hand review. My Girl Friend is staying there. She has been staying there for 5 weeks total. Pros: The people here have always sounded nice, and thoses that I have met in person have been very friendly. People here have been getting work this year picking bannas. (Although not as much as promised, don't bank on anything). Cost wise this is one of the better, although not the best in town. Cons: Would you like to itch all over for weeks on end. Well my G/F has managed to get a bed full of bed bugs. A small beetle that feeds off your blood and will leave you covered in small little red bumps. The owner has made small effort to clean up the area. I am embarassed to be an Australian when I hear what he has done to help the backpackers who live there. ICHY!!!! Also the owener drinks a fair amount and will harasses the girls that live there if they don't apear to be attached. In my G/F's case she is being semi stalked. He will come into the rooms and watch you sleep. Man I feel like sorting him out my self, but writing this review is more likely to help you guys out there. Conclusion: Cheap, great with friends, take care of Bedbugs, some surface sprays will fix the problem. Careful if he takes a fancy to you.

I think this may have closed down now but if it hasn't, it should be. This was the worst hostel I've ever seen. Filthy dirty and run by 3 horrible dirty people. The rent is asronomical and they promise you work but fail to deliver more than just enough to cover your rent. A cunning plot to keep the unsuspecting backpacker stuck in hell. This hostel should have a health warning. KEEP AWAY FROM IT!
