A big hostel with the feel of a small one in that you will be recognised and treated like a person not another 'number'. The rooms are nice with wooden floors and old fireplaces, plenty of space for bags etc. The bathrooms are old but clean, showers have a knack to them! The kitchen is big and always clean and orderly with lots of pans utensils etc. Lots of fridge space and food lockers available. There are large lockers you can store stuff in if you go on a trip etc. Large communal areas with a great TV. Great location for St Kilda. Staff take an interest in your concerns... had a bed bug query.. turns out to be unfounded but staff took it seriously and investigated properly with an intention to sort it out. Stay here if you do St Kilda and can get a room :0)

I spent 3 months here, it was well friendly, everyone went out almost every night as a group to the sunset bar over the road for cheapo drinks and bad hangovers. The bathrooms were a bit minging and the staff were a very 'intresting' bunch.

A reasonable place to stay in the South of Melbourne, this one. It is in a very nice old building and the dorms are probably above average by Australian hostel standards ( although Australian hostel standards aren't exactly that high really, let's face it). The kitchen is quite good, but the smoking rm is next to it and smoke drifts in. The manager was ok but a bit odd and not that helpful. Very good location though

i think the other reviews have been a bit unfair ot the place. i arrived at dawn one day, a bit ill and very tired, and was made to feel really welcome by the guy on duty. he sent me up to the dorm , which ok was a bit 'lived in', and said he'd sort out payment ($17/nite) and check-in once i'd had a rest. then he made me breakfast: they have free toast+jams, pancakes and cereals every morning. granted one of the other guys, who i think part owns the place, is a right arse so if he had been around more during my stay i might not be so fond of the place. cons: not enough hand basins, dorm was messy (people had been there for a couple of months though), a bit cliquey pros: homely, very good location, lovely tv room with videos, very good kitchens, good beds.

I expected of Jacksons Manor that it was a good hostel since it is a bit more expensive and by reading several reviews. I was very disappointed when I arrived there and when I could not sleep at night because other people were so noisy. Too bad because the beds are good. The manager assured us that there was a night manager who should make sure it is quiet after 11. I think he rather drinks beer and plays computer games all night and does not care. As a key deposit you have to give them your passport or pay $50. I payed $50 and was surprised to receive somebody else`s passport instead of the $50 when I returned my key. I think it is not even legal to ask for people`s passports as a key deposit, but that they do not handle the passports very carefully makes it even worse. Staff is not very friendly, it is just one of these places where it is not important for management if you enjoy your stay, only your money counts.

This place is rancid. I hated it. There were holes in the roof and mice running around in kitchen and bedrooms at night. The staff are very rude and unhelpful. You would be better off staying in a public toilet than here.

Did not like it, that is all. Reception is losed most of the times and when it is open staff prefered not to talk to us backpackers and instead drinking beers. That is not what I was expecting at all.

This place is in the heart of St Kilda and has a pretty good location right by Fitzroy St and near the trams into the city. Rooms are spacious as is the kitchen and lounge with lockers in the dining area. Friendly staff and the people in general were very nice. Could've done with a sink/basin in the rooms as toilets did not have sinks for washing hands, only in shower/bathrooms which were often occupied
