Good if you want a piss, not if you want to save money

stayed here for a while. Its in a great location if you want to get out of the city and be near the beach. no lockers if you want to lock away stuff. not enough shelfs for everyone in a room. beds are squeky, but that's normal in most backpackers. showers were grand. there is an atmosphere here but if ya want to get a nights sleep it ain't going to happen unless you can sleep through anything. kitchen is nice and big. most of the people staying here are long termers so you can feel a bit of an outsider as it feels like one big family.

Isn't backpacking about having LOTS OF FUN rather than complaining about petty things?

Coffee Palace is not just a hostel where you lay your head for the night, eat your free breakfast and move on. This is a hostel that encourages you to get involved, stay a week, a month, a year and really become part of the furniture. Upon arriving you'll think the same as me and many before me; a bit of a crazy maze with bathrooms dotted all over the place, outdated decor and certainly not a modern "flashpackers". The facilities are adequate, a well equipped kitchen with large pots to encourage communal cooking. A medium sized tv room. A couple of fridges behind reception selling six packs of grog. Some ensuites, some double rooms but mostly 8-10 bed dorms. The stand out feature is the large lounge and dining area and the large rooftop garden- two great places for meeting people and sharing a beer (or two!) Who wants a spotlessly clean flashpackers when you can have the atmosphere of this place? The staff will encourage you to get involved with the nightly activities (bingo, bbqs, fancy dress, movie nights, free nibbles) and are very knowledgable about St Kilda and Melbourne. The guests are a mix between those that have been there for a while and work, those that are just passing through and those that have been there for a while, don't work and just can't leave because they're having the time of their life. 90% of reviews you'll read on this place are by people passing through for a night or two who have been unfortunate to find themselves in a noisy or untidy room. These things happen. But if the hostel was so bad why would half the people there be counting their time in months rather than days? Oh and if you ever do leave the hostel, Melbourne is an amazing city!

Basically if you want to sleep, don't go to Coffee Palace. Music is played throughout the night at full volume and if it's not the music it's the guests/staff who keep you awake. The rooms are stuffy, smelly and can seem suffocating especially since there was only one small window in the room I stayed in. The beds were creaky and just made you feel dirty. The showers I have to say I liked because you got a shower and a toilet in one room to yourself which gives you some privacy, but they were a little dank. Seriously, if you want to get drunk and stay up all night then go here. The staff stroll in at 5am half drunk and eating a kebab, so what do you expect the hostel to be like? I SERIOUSLY recommend going to St Kilda Rd and staying at Habitat HQ formerly known as COOEE. This isn't value for money, it's getting what you paid for. It's just grim and I stayed for 2 of the 7 nights I initially booked.

I am an Australian who stayed at coffee palace earlier this year. I am ashamed that this is the standard of accommodation that is being provided for our overseas travellers, that we love so much. I understand that it is not meant to be the Hilton, but basic room cleanliness levels were not met. We booked in for the 1st and 2nd of Jan about 4months ago, only to find our room had been booked out by a drunken staff member the night before. Over the next two days we were then shuffled around a number of rooms, offered no apologies or compensations and the staff were rude and ignorant. There is no communication between staff and there is an attitude of "someone else can deal with it". Noise at all hours of the night is also a problem from long-term nightowl "guests". Melbourne is a beautiful city with many great attractions, so dont ruin your stay with a visit to coffee palace. There are many other affordable accommodation options throughout the city.

We were kept awake most nights by the majority of the other guest's, it was obvious they were dealing and taking drugs, aswell as some staff. Spoilt our Christmas and would have spent more time there if it had'nt have been so bad.Kitchen was filthy, not fit to cook in.Many of the staff were guests too and there didnt seem to be any standards. The Manager was away for Christmas which may have been why it was so bad as the first day he returned there was a big difference.

THE COFFEE PALACE IS ACE!!!

When reading these reviews it is important to understand that the Coffee Palace has been under new management who have been sorting out any downfalls the hostel may have once had. I have been staying at the Coffee Palace for 5 weeks now and intend to stay much longer. It is definitely the best hostel Ive stayed in, the staff are friendly and make you feel welcome and theres a really good vibe. Theres always stuff going on and you get free pancakes every morning. As for people moaning about the cleanliness, the dorms, bathrooms, kitchens and communal areas are cleaned every day which is more than Ive seen in any other hostel. Of course hostels get a bit untidy throughout the day but you cant blame the management for that thats just what backpakers are like! So if youre wanting to stay in St Kilda, the Coffee Palace is the only place to stay. Ignore all the bad reviews, you wont regret it!!!

Me and my mates stayed here in April and it is a dump, in fairness they're trying 2 improve but they're going the wrong way about it!!! You cant paint bathrooms or varnish floors when peole need 2 use it! Some of my stuff went missing, I know you cant blame the hostel, but there aren't any lockers or any space 2 put ur bags. We also had bed bugs, and moved rooms and still had them. And just sitting on the sofa i got bites! Its got everything u need, kitchen, washing, internet etc but its a bit shabby! Oh and the dryer ruined my clothes and when i told the woman on reception, she clearly wasn't bothered! Go 2 jacksons mannor down the road opposite! cheaper and nicer!

From the moment I checked in I was made to feel welcome. The staff are friendly and courteous. They were always ready to answer a query to the best of their knowledge. If they couldn't answer they sent me in the direction of someone who could which wasn't very often. It's definitely what makes a hostel. I've been in this hostel for the last two 2 months. Before that I stayed in hostels in America and all down the east coast from Cairns right down to Melbourne. It's definitely the best hostel I have stayed in the last year.

All those bad reviews below must have been submit by some bitter and unfun fusspots, who don't know the difference between hostel a 3star hotel! Now I can tell u I had an absolute blast over in the palace, I felt so welcome from day 1 and have been so well looked after by anthony and the rest of the staff they were so fun and caring and became my friends for life! For the record the whole hostel is cleaned every day, the showers 3times a day. Some of them r older but they will b soon reconsturcted and r deffinately not unclean!!! I loved every minute of my stay and there was always something fun happenin. If u want a sterile and boring place u can go somewhere else but if u want to have great time in Melbourne I strongly reccomand the COFFEE PALACE! And to all the people with complaints about this cool place: You all wanna pay as little as possible 4 ur accomodation, but expectc miracles 4 it.. Get Real!!! Have some fun in ur life and stop grizzeling!!

Just read what people have put about this place, and bollocks to the sad f<>kers, who are miserable!!! I intended to stay for a few days and ended up there for three months. Nothing but dollor pots next door, fun people, good staff and made loads of friends. There was a close gang of us there, and we had a riot in the hostel............ Ok, it's not that clean, or has the best facilities, but that's part of backpacking, to rough it now and again. If you like beer, fun, sex and meeting people, it's the place to stay in Melbourne. If anyone is reading this and remembers the England v Oz 'one day'er' back in December 02 at the MCG - cast your mind back to the streaker(s) Will and Steve!!! So, ignore the prats who would rather stay in a five star palace and not muck in, or make friends, it's the place to go and have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Having read the most recent reviews I can't help but think someone is trying to sabotage the new managments efforts. Yes the building is old, yes it can seem a little bit stuffy in the kitchen, but hey, I know for a fact that they have really improved the overall running of this hostel. A year ago you wouldn't have stayed here. Now it is run by friendly staff and managed really well. I know as I helped for a month with cleaning. Please disregard the terrible reviews, as I believe they are not true. There is definitley no old man on reception, you won't get sick and the place is cleaned every day. The bathrooms three times a day!! The kitchen twice. You will only meet nice friendly people at the Coffee Palace. So if you are looking to have a great time, meet some friendly travellers and staff and relax then definitley make your way to the Coffee Palace. Trust me, those few bad reviews are absolute shite!!

I first stayed in the CP in june of 04, supposedly for two weeks, four months later and it still held the same appeal for me. it had just come under new management when i arrived and i have since seen it change and get a whole lot better. so it isn't a five star luxury hotel, but it has a hell of a lot of character, the staff are friendly and helpful, and provides a great atmosphere for you to meet people on some of the many activities they ran. i recommend this hostel to anyone who is even thinking of staying in melbourne, and have since got many of my friends i have travelled with to stay there too, and they loved it.

i have to agree coffee palace is a dive. having stayed in several hostel around the country i can honestly say this was the worst. the whole place needs desperate attention. it looks and feels run down and uncared for. the kitchen is far to small for the number of guests and the kitchen set system is frankly unhygenic. the bathrooms aren't clean and i am still recovering from the bed bugs. the location is great but i am sure there are better places in st kilda.

Character? Charm? Unlikely is this scum infested wierdo's dosshouse. Possibly the only place where you can get dirtier by having a shower and going to bed. With everyone's favourite retarded uncle manning the front desk and a policy of only allowing winos and losers to use the facilities, the Coffee palace exudes a rustic charm not dissimlar to that of a wartorn Beirut. Enjoy your stay guys. Get and AIDS test when you leave!

I stayed at the Coffee Palace for 4 nights, and to be honest, it was a pretty big dive! The place was badly maintained and pretty run down. The kitchen was tiny although the common room wasn't too bad, but the Internet ($2 for 30 mins) was really slow so just swallowed your money straight away. I stayed in an 8 bed shared dorm which smelt and I only ever saw the room get cleaned once, plus it was tiny! The window wouldn't open very much so the room was constantly smelly and stuffy. The bathrooms were terrible! Only some of the bathrooms had sinks in and in general every one of them was run down. I'm not asking for an immaculate place whilst I'm travelling but some degree of cleanliness would have been much appreciated, given that I have stayed in better and cheaper hostels that have been so much better. I couldn't wait to get out of this place!!!

dirty bathrooms, no ice box and total incompetent staff - that's st. kilda coffee palace! although we had paid our rent two days in advance, the manager kicked kicked me and my friend out of our room at 9am. we had to move to another room, because our beds had been double-booked and a group of asians wanted to move in. we did not get any compensation, not even a "sorry". don't stay at coffee palace, there are so many much nicer places around st. kilda.

I had an absolutely awesome time at the Coffee Palace and I would say that the people I met there were among the best since I got to Australia. The staff were very friendly and always extremely helpful. Anthony, especially always went out of his way to help and must be one of the better hostel managers I've met since travelling. The best bit of the Coffee Palace, although it has a great atmosphere, lots of rooftop parties and a fantastic atmosphere, had to be that it was the first hostel I've been to where I've felt like I've been treated like an adult rather than a backpacker. Altogether a fantastic hostel and one I'd recommend to anyone that wants to have a good time, probably not the best place to sleep off jet-lag though

I only spent two nights at the Coffee Palace but had an absolute ball. St Kilda is a great part of the world.. lots of backpackers, lots of great party venues, lovely surroundings. The actual facilities on offer are pretty poor tho.. it's a very old building that hasn't been renovated and it shows. It's not that the place isn't cleaned - because it is - but everything is getting old and needs a bit of money spent on it. To sum up: If you want somewhere that's spotless then there's another good backpackers in St Kilda.. if you want somewhere with a great atmosphere and you don't really care what it looks like then you'll love it.
