I had a fantastic time here. Staff went out of their way to help. They organised a great ski trip for me, cheers! What can I say about the hostel? Go there, because it is a marvel in the hostelworld. Everything is laid out to be really comfortable for us travellers and finally I found a place with really good comfortable beds. Also much appreciated the central heating system! Everything was just perfect. Compliments to the owners and the staff. Keep up the good work! Cheers :O

Without question the best hostel I've ever stayed in - I was very sad to leave.

I've never stayed in such a great hostel! Its warm, clean cosy, everything is freshly painted. The kitchens and bathrooms are really well equipped - its like staying in somebody's house. The lounge areas are clean and nicely decorated and the dorms are lovely (so are the doubles - I sneaked a peek!) I particularly appreciated the comfy beds - real mattresses and designed for tall people and loved the fact that there was loads of space, and a light over everyone's bed. All this and you get homemade bread for breakfast in the mornings (if you get up in time!) The staff there were so friendly and helpful - letting me choose which room I wanted to stay in, booking all my travel and answering about a million annoying questions! Laundry, internet and security are all good, the garden must be lovely in the summer and I loved being able to pick my own herbs to cook with. I found the location perfect - 10-15 mins to walk into town and with all the shops just across the road. The bus service is pretty good too Altogether I had a great time there - extended my stay by three days and was sad when I had to leave. I find the negative reviews written below very hard to believe and would just add that I've worked in hostels....and there's just no pleasing some people!!!

This was our first stop in New Zealand and we couldn't have wished for a better place to stay. Extra clean, super comfy beds and brilliant facilities. Showers were not just cubicles with a shower curtain but also rather good-sized rooms with hot showers. We couldn't share the last reviewers (Rebecca) opinion as we found the staff incredibly patient and going out of their way to help with our endless enquires and from what we observed they were very kind and helpful over the phone too. We can highly recommend this hostel. Go there and see for yourself rather than not staying there because of someones comment (Rebecca) who seem to simply have a hearing and listening problem or why else would someone keep spending money on making more and more phone calls after been told the same reply by the receptionist every time????

Could not book this hostel!

During the last week I have tried several time to book a room with Old Country House for early January (it is now late November). I wouldn't think this would be such a odd request, since many other hostels in Christchurch evidently already start running out of rooms. I have also booked 8 other hostels/backpackers/motels in the last week for around the same time withouth any problems. But at the Old Country House it seems to be "mission impossible" and the service level on phone equals zero. I am met by various comments, different every time I call. "No, our books are not open for more then one month in advance", "No, our books are only open until new years" or "sorry we can only take bookings over Internet". Since the webpage was not specified by staff in this last conversation, I naturally looked at their own webpage to book from there. But from there you could only book 2 nights (I was after 1 night only). I call back and staff tells me it's fine to only book 1 night, and that I should go to another webpage. This one is also only for bookings of 2 nights or more. I call back for the third time, get no excuse for the inconvenience and no suggestion of what to do next in order to get my booking through, just "aha, ok" in a "tough luck" kind of way. I ask to speak to the manager to see if there is any other way for me to make a booking. "No Gerti is away, call back after Wednesday". I call back Thursday and ask for Gerti. "She will be in later on today, she will call you back then". I leave my details, but when I still haven't heard anything by midday Friday, I call back myself (note that this is my 5th call... ). "No Gerti is away over the weekend, you have to call back on wednesday" (!!). Even though I explain to this staff that I was promised to get a call back last night regarding a booking, I get no excuse, simply "it was not me working yesterday it was another girl". The worst thing wasn't the obviously ineffective and a bit odd booking procedure, but the fact that I seriously felt like a disturbance to both of the girls I was talking to. According to the tone of their voice it wasn't them who should apologise for me not being called back as promised (it would have been so easy to just say "Sorry about that, give me your details and I make sure it will be taken care of soon as possible"). Instead I felt it was basically me who should apologise for dare calling up and try to book a room 1

This was a superb hostal that I stayed in. They stressed that I needed to be there for 8pm which was fine, and the girls on reception were very very helpful in booking transport for me for the airport a few days later. When i needed something i could easily page them and they came straight away, their service was brilliant. The hostel is very clean with a big kitchen fully equiped with matching plates and cups etc of good quality (no flowerly stuff that looked like it was from the 1970s) this gave the impression that they cared about the place. Wooden floors gave it that more smarter look and feel. Carpets in the rooms well padded - beds very hard and comfy. Plenty of room for foodstuff in the fridges and around the sides. Geared towards the quieter or older backpackers as it is quite a way out of town which was a bit of a shock to me at first especially as i walked it at 7.30pm with 2 big rucksacks. However it is worth staying out of town if you want this sort of place - definately no Magic or Kiwi Experience here (phew!) - shops opposite are very handy - good equiped supermarket and take aways for tea. I really enjoyed my stay here - the gardens were lovely, the lounge area was cute and the staff were very very friendly. Thank you for a lovely stay.

I really hate writing negative reviews, this is my only one for New Zealand though :( The hostel it self it quite a long walk out of the city, not quite as close to the centre as the advert makes out, but you can pay for a bus, if you have a lot to carry. The atmosphere was very strange for a small hostel, you got the impression from some staff that it was a hassle for them to have backpackers staying! Country House hostel made quite a negative impression on Christchurch, so I changed to another backpackers & although bigger the staff were great and much more relaxed there. I would not recommend a stay here because the few people I met there all felt the same, and a bad stay can make your time in a place so much less enjoyable.

This hostel really shocked me as i looked on this site and expected it to be pretty good. The lady (gerda?) is the rudest womean i have ever come across. I left after i was spoken to like a dog and went to charlie b's. I booked the hostel and paid my deposit and arrived to a note on the door saying they were closed and i would have to find somewhere else tonight! I asked for my deposit back the next day (25 min walk out of town) and she refused as she said she mailed me which i guarentee i did not recieve(why she could not ring i do not know) I would be very careful about paying up front with this hostel especially if you arrive out of hours (after 8pm!).Please do the right thing and do not stay here. You will thank me. _____________________________
HOSTEL MANAGER'S RIGHT OF REPLY In reply to James Padden's review: Our hostel is small hostel and owner operated and we pride ourselves in helping guests and non-guest in every possible way with all kind of enquires. On this occasion with James Padden we were truly left gob-smacked, shaken and in tears after he was asked to leave our premises because we simply do not take abuse off people (being shouted at, sworn at and being called a liar!) especially not after having gone out of our way not to leave James stranded without accommodation and nowhere to go when he arrived 1am in the morning at our hostel (knowing that our reception closes at 8pm) and making sure that he would find a place to sleep for that night with the least possible inconvenience for him - all of which was caused only because of his own fault! Here is the story: This person made an Internet booking through the bug website with arrival time at 11pm although we clearly advertise on that website that our office closes at 8pm. I sent him two emails suggesting to book into a hostel with 24 hours reception service for his first night, keeping his booking for the remaining 4 nights (mainly to avoid him loosing his whole deposit as suppose to only loosing the deposit for the first night...) and especially because I noticed he had an additional booking for a few days later when his dad was arriving. (Sometimes people advise us that they made a mistake with their arrival time being 'AM' instead of 'PM'.) But no reply to either email to James by the day of arrival - needless to say that it was also pointless to ring him then with us being 13hours ahead of the UK as he would have been in transit by then. However, we kept the room available until 1pm just in case he would turn up at 11am instead of 11pm. But with him not turning up by 8pm we were pretty certain that he would be arriving in the middle of the night in a foreign country in a foreign city and with no accommodation. Being concerned of this we actually rang two other hostels with 24 hours reception service within 10 minutes walking distance from us to check their availability for that night to make it easy for James to find accommodation in the middle of the night. We left a note on the door explaining the situation and telling him where to find a public phone (20m away from the hostel) and directions where to find those two hostels. Yes, James did turn up the following day wanting to cancel his whole booking which was fine by us but he also wanted his whole deposit back which I explained to him that bug.com and their booking engine retains this money as their commission. Because our hostel does not receive this so called deposit we can therefore not refund it. I was called a liar and he started swearing and yelling at me. I did not even get a chance to ask him why he made a booking with a hostel that closes reception way before he is due to arrive? Anyway, our video footage proofs that he actually arrived at 12.50am not at 11pm as he advised, picked up the note and went straight back into the shuttle bus to get to Charlie B's - so no real inconvenience for him. It is particular disappointing and hurtful for us to be treated like that after having done everything possible and more to help him to make his arrival here in Christchurch as easy as possible in the middle of the night and in a strange country. I must say if the man wouldn't have been so foulmouthed and belligerent I would have offered to help him get his money back from hostelworld.com. I have never been spoken to in this manner in eight years of operating our hostel but keep looking forward to dealing with all those lovely people who have yet to come to experience the warm hospitality that New Zealand is so re-known for - because that is what our hostel is all about.

I think this is the best hostel in Christchurch. Stayed at a few top rated hostels in the city but no other hostel is like this one. Especially enjoyed to big garden with lots of seats, some are hidden little bush seats where you can just sit and enjoy the sun and read your book. Stayed in a dorm with lots of space, best beds I've encountered during my travels in New Zealand... They have a herb garden with a good selection of fresh herbs. This hostel has lots of fine and pleasant touches that most people wouldn't even find in their own home. It seems the owners have thought of every possible convenience to make the traveller feel at home. Kitchen is very well equipped with lots of pots & pans and crockery items., Hotel-like electronic keys and reception staff are all very friendly and helpful - could keep going on with praise but in summary: I had the best time, everything was just perfect - thank you!

Stayed at some of the top rated hostels in Christchurch but this one is OUTSTANDING VALUE FOR YOUR MONEY. It's warm - makes a great difference in the winter... Great location with shopping over the road, great hostel facilities, plenty of space in the dorm, great beds, great large garden & lots of more 'greats' to mention including Murphy the dog and of course the great staff... Yes it is a bit of a walk to the city but believe me every step is worth it...

This was definitely one of the best hostels we had ever stayed at. We had a double ensuite which was very spacious and clean, along with the bathroom. They provided towels and bedding. The kitchen was nicely equipped and even the refrigerator was clean! The homemade bread in the morning was delicious. We felt very safe and truly enjoyed our stay. The only downfall was that the staff didn't have much advice for activities to do around the area but we just went to Cathederal Square and got the information we needed.

Lovely, clean, tidy and very friendly and helpful staff. I do think though that this hostel deserves 5 stars in EVERY category as the facilities are amazing and the safety couldn't be any better for a city hostel. Well worth the walk from the city or the money spent on the busfare....

This was one of the best hostels we stayed in and we would recommend it to anyone else. It was clean and welcoming and very well maintained. The kitchen was spotless and there was free freshly baked bread for those up early enough to get it in the morning. Its a short walk to the centre of Christchurch but don't let that put you off - this is a great hostel.
