good place to unwind if you're not too fussy

Although this backpacker is definitely not the cleanest or most modern, I enjoyed my stay there. And that is due to the country-house feel to it. While all the workers stay in the main building, short term guests stay in a separate little house next door with an old-fashioned bathroom and kitchen. After the bustle of the big (party)backpackers in Perth I loved the quiet and almost privat feel to this place

I stayed one night here and checked out at about 6AM as I was so cheesed off with it. Most of the people staying here are workers, meaning that the hostel is quite messy and people are already in their own little groups - I understand why this happens but it means that it's not a good place for travellers. In addition, with everyone fruit-picking, most people are in bed by 10PM and get up at 5AM - again, not the greatest for non-workers. The shower I used was dirty, including having a (used) Elastoplast sitting in the soap dish. Just to add to this, 2 of the people in my dorm were clearly dating and decided to get in the same bunk together. There was enough whispering and giggling to keep me awake, which is fine - I don't mind someone getting some action. Unfortunately shortly after they'd had their fun, the smoke alarm started beeping regularly because its battery was running low. I was never going to get to sleep with this noise so I took my bedding out to the common room and curled up next to one of the cats. An hour or so later, the night porter appeared, turned on the light, and insisted that I couldn't sleep there. I told him that he should get the freakin' smoke alarm fixed, and then I would sleep in my bunk. His response to this was to turn off the light and walk out, without even looking at the smoke alarm. I would not stay here again. Even if I hadn't had issues with the smoke alarm, I would still have considered it a grotty hostel.

I stayed in Pemberton to pick apples but still had a good time, mainly because of the vibe at the hostel. It's mainly fellow workers who are staying there so everyone is in the same boat- it's quiet at night but come saturday night be prepared to let your hair down and party in the sports club across the road. There are two buildings and I would highly recommend getting into the one with the kitchen as it's far nicer and has more showers. It's recently been bought and the guys are getting some radiators and more fridges, and with these additions I reckon it would be a spot-on hostel. It's homely, clean ('til everyone comes home from work!), and there's two cute cats too.

Pemberton YHA is on the main road, although this is less of an issue than the logging plant opposite. We were put in the cottage which has two doubles and a dorm; our room was huge with large comfy bed and excellent bedding. Building is old and a bit shabby but stuff does work, and staff were very welcoming and helpful.

When we stayed here, the majority of other backpackers were working in the area. Decent facilities although a bit busy in the kitchen - big gap under the door of our room which lead straight outside so would allow easy access for mice but we had no problems.
