What it lacks in newness it makes up in character and service

When we first arrived we were a little bewildered by everything going on. The reception is located in the lounge area which seems to be a hive of activity with movies playing, pool tables, people reading and sitting round and chatting and eating. My girlfriend and me had booked for a couple of dorm beds but arrived to find they had mistakenly over booked. We figured they would call around and find us new places and refund our money.....we were wrong. The guy behind reception asked what kind of room we would like since they had overbooked. I said jokingly a double room. The guy behind reception who was a scarey presence at first handed us a key to a double room and told us that since it was their fault there would be no extra charge and when we were settled in he would buy us a drink. We were very surprised and happy they had over booked to say the least. The backpackers is a little old and run down but they keep up with the maintence and the place is very clean. It doesn't compete in regards to the new facilities like some of the bigger backpackers but what it lacked it more than made up for in character and atmosphere and all the staff are excellent and pricing great for those travelling on a budget. My only grumble is the noise though from the clubs in the lane. Maybe it was because we were there during the weekend but the clubs don't seem to close till early in the morning which made sleeping a little difficult to start with but nothign ear plugs couldn't fix and they could use an elevator as well. The rooms are a little small but for the price you pay you don't mind. I would deinfately reccommend this place to people.

Arrived at the backpackers exhausted after a 12 hour train ride from Wellington. The receptionist that greeted me was utterly stupid (and drunk!) He checked me into a room which was already booked and paid for, only to find it occupied by a very surprised German (who later told me it was the second time it had happened that night). Was moved to a different room with no ensuite (and I wasn't given any money back either). At least the room and the bathrooms were clean and fairly well maintained. Would definitely recommend trying somewhere else. Auckland's a big city - there must be something better, surely.

weve stayed in this hostel twice, both times in the dorm rooms the first was during the week the second time at a weekend. the second time we did find it hard to sleep as it is very noisy, cause of the bars right next door. but the facilities are good. every were is a bit worn round the edges (well lived in) but it is very clean. showers are clean and always seem to have hot water. the kitchen is clean (the upstairs kitchen is better equiped than downstairs) the laundry was cheap. and the lounge area is big so everyone can fit in it doing there own thing. telly, pool, games, chatting or quitly reading all is ok. the staff ive always found friendly. things seem to have changed here maybe now the staff carnt smoke inside they work harder or maybe its new staff, but i have found them nice. i wouldnt stay here at the weekends unless your one of those out partying but during the week it was nice.

This is my 1st review on bug but i felt i had to stand up for this place. Its not the best hostel in the world and its a little bit worn but iv found in my few days here a number of positives... 1) the staff are excellent. there must have been a change in personel since the reviews below or something cos the reception guys have been excellent. They were kind and welcoming (small things like shaking our hand), informative and helpful (esp considering quantas had lost my goddamn luggage: reception helped get it back). So for me they've been 5 star all the way. Amenities are generally good (though the kitchen is very basic). And its nice to find a backpackers hostel that actually charges like a budget accomodation shld. Ie: pool tables $1 a go, decent internet at $3 an hour, washing machine $2. Iv got fed up paying crazily high rates for these things. (also there is a free safe behind reception). My only complaint wld be that at night you need a swipe card to access the building. This is good security but when people cant get in they ring this god awful buzzer that wakes half the hostel up! But i would recommend this place to anyone. A good laid back and helpful place to stay.

Had to go out and buy a sleep sheet as soon as I got there as the sheet I was provided with had someone else's hair.... Dirty, cliquey, intimidating, unfriendly. Find somewhere else to stay - there are plenty of hostels in auckland.

For people who love smoking

I hate smoking, but by the time I came to Auckland, I was so tired to look a better place, so I stayed there for a week. The receptionists were more interested in smoking than serving customers. Talk about people, who are full of themselves!! I've travelled quite a bit and I have to say that this has been one of the worst places... the only positive thing was the clean toilets. A way too expensive considering the standard!!! In other words, try to find a cheaper and better place to stay.

This is a very drab an dirty place and not worth the $23 a night for a dorm. The receptionist seems more concerned about lighting up her next cigarette than actually helping you. Far better places to stay.

We were two older travellers, needing cheap accommodation, we found it great, clean comfortable and plenty of showers and toilets and best of all right next door to a pub!! Loved it, had a great weekend!

I stayed in a double room it was quiet enough to get a good nights sleep although the bed was lumpy and not very comfortable. The day receptionist was very friendly and helpful, however the night receptionist was rude and dopey. reasonable 2nd choice, stayed here because Auckland Central Backpackers was booked out.
