Laid back, but a bit basic

Cons
No air con in summer, noisy at times, not well maintained, disrespectful long term stayers
Pros
Quiet location, close to shops, free shuttle to the city

Basically this place is out of the city and quiet in that respect. It's about 10 to 15 minutes' walk from Southbank train station which is only a few stops from the city, that's if you can't get a lift with the free shuttle. There's a nice hot food shop at the end of the street, and you're also close to shops at West End. The TV area was pretty good also. Unfortunately this place has no air conditioning and is VERY hot in summer (I stayed there last January for a weekend and it was hard to sleep), it can be noisy at times, people smoke all over the place even though there are no smoking signs, and there seemed to be people living long term in my dorm who left the door unlocked and wide open even after I closed it and also left their bags and clothes and plates everywhere. The ensuite was also very basic, and the ensuite door didn't have a lock. Reception staff also showed no sympathy after one of the long term people in my dorm took my door key which was sitting next to my clothes (probably after losing theirs), and I got charged a $10 lost key fee. I won't be staying there again. I've stayed at Banana Bender near Roma St, Bunk in the Valley, and Palace Embassy in the city, and this hostel was the worst of the lot.

Somewhere to Stay is in an attractive Queensland style building, with palms and gardens, and it couldn't be more conveniently located. We wanted a good night's sleep and access to reliable, funky shopping, good laundry facilities, and a chance to recharge our batteries before taking off overseas again. This hostel was a terrific choice. We chose a motel style room for $65/night, with ensuite and brand new queen size mattress, and we enjoyed the pool, slept well, gave the laundry a workout and ate in the fantastic cafes in West End for three days. The hostel also provides a shuttle bus into town during the day, even though the local bus is cheap and five minutes walk away. We'd definitely spend days in Brisbane at this place again!

Afraid this hostel either has to upgrade their premises or downgrade their website. They don't match I'm afraid, the place is really run down and there are a few safety issues with rocking steps and shaky bannisters. Place kept reasonably clean but showers have seen their day. Out in the sticks with a good trek to the city, they put on free transport in a van which is pictured on the website before it became the wreck it is now. After havin travelled from Scotland it was not what I expected, and moved out early. Come on guys you have the makins of a goldmine wi some elbow grease and a lick of paint. Don't just be content with what it used to be How many years old is that website ?

My darling and me got the double room with balcony, mainly because it was the only available double room with TV and fridge. The location was not very convenient as it was far from the city centre and train station. Although the hostel was kind enough to provide transport to and fro the city, however it was not frequent. There were not many amenities around the hostel as it was situated in the residential area. The room was spacious and decently clean. There was this TV but it had poor reception. The furnishing was very basic and we could not even find a place to hang our clothes because they provided us with no cupboard. The hostel had more than sufficient toilets and showers but they were rather small in size and hot water was intermittent. Imagine the pain we had to go through because it was winter and we had to freeze our asses off while showering. The hostel has a huge TV lounge with comfortable sofas and chairs. We also made use of the paid internet facility in the lounge. Basically it was fine, but we actually shorten our stay there to check into a nicer HOTEL in the city because there was nothing much to keep us there. (But I do enjoy Brisbane though.)

Obvioulsy the person who wrote that this hostel rips people off and is filthy was paid by another hostel to say this. I have never stayed in a more friendly hostel, all staff and management are very helpful and go out of their way to assist you with anything from work, nights out, concerts in the hostel, regular barbeques etc. Home away from home is how i would describe it. Not only was my room cleaned every day but the kitchen was the best i have seen anywhere. Salt water pool a definitely highlight.

I stayed at this hostel last year and found the place dirty, the staff unhelpful and incompetent and the managers unwelcoming to backpackers. This hostel has only one goal, taking as much money from backpackers and delivering as little as possible. I was overcharged for my stay and saw a rat in the kitchen, if you can avoid staying here you should.

After coming up from Brisbane Backpackers this place was heaven!! Loved my stay here. The staff are great! Very friendly and helpful. They do a great job running the place (as the whole time I was there I never saw a manager/owner). Stayed here for 4 weeks and found the place had a great atmosphere and it was easy to meet other people - which is great when travelling on your own.

The place is a bit run-down but the friendly atmosphere more then makes up for it! The staff were great, very helpful and friendly from carrying your bags to your room upon check-in to great organised nights out. They also have a fantastic pool area to soak up the sun and free courtesy bus to the city hourly. Even though it is not in the city, it's close enough and only a 10 minute walk to Southbank Parklands.

Throughout my full time in OZ I never stayed in a more friendly and relaxed hostel. Although the hostel itself isn't the best looking one in Brisbane the relaxed atmosphere and the friendliness of the staff (especially Wicks and Tristan)makes the place worth staying in. I would particularly recommend this hostel to people new to backpacking as it's a great place to meet people with plenty of nights out organized.
