We only spent a couple of nights in the Brown Kiwi so our view is only a snapshot. We were glad it was only a couple of nights though. The hostel owner is very nice and welcoming, gave us a map of the area and explained where we were and the bus times etc. The place is small, but clean and the kitchen has all the instruments you require. The place feels a little worn and could do with some work. Not the hostels fault but while we stayed there, there was a large group of Germans who were not friendly at all - in fact quite rude. The main issue I had was with the bathroom. It is the worst I have encountered so far. There is a girls and boys bathroom - the boys being under the stairs. It's tiny. The showers just have a curtain and no room to get changed so you have to stand in the room drying yourself with others walking around you (not to mention if the door is opened anyone walking by would get an eye full). The hostel owner does not live there so it can get quite loud at night - with people getting back from the bars.

Very convenient: a minute away from the Link bus to town and 5 minutes away from Ponsonby cafes. A relaxed atmosphere outside of the crowded city center. Dorm rooms were a little cramped, damp and musty, but common areas were comfortable and clean. Bathrooms a bit run down and small.

_____THE GOOD (1) Fantabulous location - a sneeze away from the ever-handy Link bus and so peaceful. (2) Friendly staff. (3) Dorm beds are comfortable - non saggy in the middle. (4) The best shower water pressure!! (5) $12 shuttle to the airport DIRECT from the hostel! (6) If you're lucky, Vinny will still be there - he cooks for everyone mouthwatering meals every Saturday. (7) They have recycle bins and a beautiful outdoor dining area! (8) They have huge bins for everyone to store their own food! (9) Free phone for local calls. (10) You can store your stuff temporarily at the hostel even after you've checked out. _____THE NOT-SO-GOOD (1) Women's showers are TINY and could do with a few more hooks perhaps. (2) There seemed to be co-ed dorms only. (3) Maybe best to bring your own pillow as the dorm ones were REALLY flat.
