Although i didnt actually stay in this hostel i spent a lot of time here with friends who stayed here for 2 weeks. The communal areas were fine and the kitchen wasnt bad - quite clean, but the rooms were quite shabby and need some work. After seeing the rooms i was a bit worried about visiting the bathrooms but they werent actually as bad as i had expected. Clean but basic - showers looked ok, but no mirrors which i found a bit strange. If you arent too fussy about where you stay and want somewhere cheap in a fantastic location just to get your head down for a bit of rest then this isnt a bad choice. If you are looking for a more modern, sparkly clean hostel with great facilities then book elsewhere.

I've stayed at the Ritz on a few occasions over the past few years and I've got to say that it is has really slipped in cleanliness recently. The rooms are filthy and the bathrooms are worse. Hot water is a rare commodity as well. The Ritz IS a very social place and a great place to meet other travellers who are looking to have some fun, but living in filth and risking a bed bug attack is the downside to having a great social life. Ironically, the prices at the Ritz are the same as the newest and cleanest hostel in th St. Kilda area. Go figure.

Booking not guaranteed!

A couple of weeks before I visited Melbourne last year I made a booking on VIP's website for a single room at this hostel and paid my deposit. When I arrived, I was told that my room was gone, as on-line booking does not guarantee a room! I wouldn't have been surprised if that happened somewhere in Europe, but I had expected more reasponable service in Melbourne. They did refund my deposit in full and directed me to Enfield House (a hostel about 10 minutes walk away), which turned out to be the shabbiest and noisiest hostel I had ever stayed in in my entire life, not to mention the uni-sex bathrooms. I transferred to Queensbury Hill YHA later on, and that was WAY better!

Good Chill Place

This place is a nice laid back place to hang out and meet some good people. It's only a 10 minute walk to the beach and you can hop a tram into Metro Melbourne right out front of the hostel. The showers are few but clean and the rooms are small but cumfy. They have a nice chill lobby to hang out in and meet other travellers. Don't stay here if your too light of a sleeper. If your looking for a good time close to the beach this is your place.

I stayed there about 3 years ago and can't get the time I had there out of my head. Wine & Cheese evenings were excellent although slightly lacking in basic human dignity as 100 people scramble around the place for an extra cube of cheddar. Nice atmosphere created by the staff. Anyway, if anyone was there at the same time as me and wants to get in touch, then feel free to.

True Backpackers Ritz

I've travelled all across Australia and found this to be one of the best hostels I've stayed in. Ok, so it's not exactly the Ritz you're expecting, but if you're wanting to meet interesting people and party all night, you won't mind the almost horizontal atmosphere!! The staff are very friendly, and you get help with looking for work...if you're not too hungover to crawl out of bed!! You even get the chance to meet some celebrities (well, some of the Neighbours cast). They have Neighbours night every week in the pub downstairs, and if you're lucky you could get to be Toadie's latest conquest!! Great party atmosphere, and a great place to meet new friends, it could be a little cleaner, and maybe have more shower facilities, but hey, since when did backpackers live in luxury?!! And I don't know what the other reviewee is talking about; I love pancakes!!

I stayed in this hostel for three months of my time in australia and it was the best 3 months i had. I came to australia to have lots of fun and this place gave me it, they organise everything from trips to Ramsey street to free wine and cheese nights. The hostel has everything you need and the staff were always very helpful. It is in the perfect location situated above the elephant and wheelbarrow pub which has live music 6 days of the week, it is always busy and always full of people having a good time. If you came to australia to have as much fun as possible then this is the place to stay ! If you didn't you are better of staying in an old folks home !!

This hostel is the pitts! The rooms are hot, smelly, dirty, tramp-like, the kitchen was unhygienic, 'breakfast' consisted of pancakes...every single person in the hostel gathered around a small table waiting half hour to get one, then another half hour for your second. Pancakes for breakfast??? Hostels should be more empathetic to travellers, at least make it comfy.

I found the Ritz to be shabby and badly in need of re furbishment. The kitchen facilities were terrible, only two pots had handles and there were not enough cooking rings. At night the place turns into a zoo and the noise goes on all night. Luckily I had some ear plugs.

I'm actually probably not the best person to review a backpackers because apart from a YHA in Melbourne, this was really the first I had stayed at. Compared to the YHA it was much more casual but we liked it that way and the staff were so lovely. It's small which is nice. The facilities left a little bit to be desired but the rooms were clean with comfy beds. We didn't get to try out the free breakfast cause we never got up early enough, but great cafes, bakerys and pubs for later on are right near by. I would give the Ritz a 3 1/2 stars but i can't do half stars, so all in all we had a really plesant stay.
