the hostel is located right on the harbour. Both the atmosphere and staff are pleasant, an enjoyable stay.

I've stayed in Ullapool Youth Hostel a few times over the last 4 years and always found a warm welcome from the people at the reception. They also have a lot of information about what to do or where to go in the area. The bathrooms, kitchen, diningroom and dorms are always tidy and clean. Travellers must understand that arriving in the morning can be a bit unconvenient for staff in the hostel, especcially in the summer when they are busy every single night.(see other review) The fact that you are welcome to leave your luggage in the hostel is more then helpful. They can't let you go to your room in the morning they have to clean the hostel first after the previous night!!! I've alway had a very good stay and I'll be back again this summer and this autumn.

Wonder if the previous reviewer wandered into the mens washroom by mistake! I stayed there with my friend Euan from Perth and didn't have the same experience. The views from the rooms & the dining room are amazing, overlooking the harbour, with seals coming in to the loch to greet the fishing boats arriving in the evening with their tea. And close to the bus stops (thank the Lord!). The staff seemed OK to me pretty laid back I thought. We stayed during the Ullapool Guitar Festival which takes over the village for a weekend in October. Lots of opportunity to listen to world class music (hostel staff at all the gigs too!).

I booked this hostel through the scottish youth hostel association. they were SO nice on the phone. but it goes to a central office, not to the individual hostel. I got into Ullapool in the morning. I was *exhausted*, and had no idea where this place was. so I call them and have the following conversation with the woman working there (to her credit, her first language was french. but she spoke enough english to get on fine with other people... and I was making a point to speak very clearly) me- 'Hello. I will be checking in today, and Im wondering if you could give me directions to the hostel?' her- you want to make a reservation? me- no. I already have a reservation. my name is -----. I just need to know how to get to you guys so I can check in. her- oh. me- could you tell me how to get there? Im at the bus station. her- no. me- um. is there anyone else there who would be able to give me directions? her- no. me- well I really have no idea how to get there. her- we are very very close. me- in which direction? her- we are on the boat. me- what? you are *on the boat*? her- yes. on the boat. me- nevermind. I will figure it out. THEY ARE NOT ON A BOAT. I *eventually* found it. (Ullapool is *tiny*) and went in to check in. when I come in, she is talking to someone else who speaks perfect english (who probably would have been perfectly willing to give me directions instead of leaving me to wander around with my gigantic pack) the english speaking woman left and I was left with the other one who started to check me in. she says 'we arent open right now. you can leave your stuff in the kitchen and come back at three' so we had a little... discussion... about how that would not be acceptable for me, as I was under the impression that I would be able to nap once I got there and I was *really* tired. I eventually got my way and went to the room. pretty lame facilities. thin mattresses on particle board. showers that reek of urine. blah blah blah. the internet was *really* expensive there (£1 for 20 minutes) and the other woman who worked there was also unpleasant. definatly more than abrupt. I was really dissatisfied with my whole experience there.
