Great place, best I found travelling around Australia. Lots of freebies, breakfast, tea, coffe pasta etc. It was so clean and the bar had loads of activities, so was easy to meet people, also reasonably priced drinks was a bonus. Loved Melbourne and loved Urban Central, would highly recommend.

hi,my name is catherine i stayed in urban for my first 3 months in australia. urban is a really good hostle i had a brillant time there and i met some amazing people. however on my last night at urban,my digital camera was stolen. as i sat at the bar with my handbag on the bar, the man who stole my camera came up behind me and opened my bag and removed my camera while i was talking to a friend of mine. the whole incident was caught in camera. this happened on a thursday but the staff in the hostle counlnt retrive the video footage until saturday. i filed a police report saturday. the man who stole my camera checked out of the hostle in the middle of the next week, and somehow the video footage of him stealing my camers got deleted, meaning nothing could be done about my camera. the manager of the hostel was no help to me or anything to do with the whole suituation. when me and my friends went to talk to him,he wouldnt listen to us and completly undermined us and dismissed the whole suitition. that all happened over a month ago. now a month later after he stole my camera, the man who put his hand into my bag and stole my camera has checked back into the hostle. the manager and staff know that this man is a theif. i feel it is my duty to inform people what this man did because the manager i feel will not. be careful with your belongings and lock your lockers. this man is walking around the hostle. thank you, catherine.
Manager's reply
As General Manager of Urban Central I would like to protect my venue and personal reputation by explaining a few facts about this most unfortunate incident.

Catherine is a truly unfortunate victim of theft and as stated, the damning though legally inconclusive footage was recorded over (he was seen with his hand in her bag but we were unable to identify him taking any items). I take full responsibility for this mistake but I was unaware until after the incident that I would lose the footage. As explained to Catherine at the time, the recording system (which we are not legally bound to have) was set to store only approximately two days of footage on this particular camera before starting to rewrite disk space. This has now been rectified and again I accept full responsibility for this mistake.

In a heated moment Catherine and three of her friends (who had previously been staying at Urban Central for a substantial amount of time) stormed into my venue and demanded to talk to me. Catherine’s friends then proceeded to ask me what I was going to do about this problem, demand that I fix it and in a number of ways informed me that my procedures of management are appalling (I can’t recall the exact words). I know of no manager that will allow ex residents to enter their venue to shout and swear at them. As they were in no state to conduct a reasonable conversation, I asked them all but Catherine to leave. I then spoke to Catherine about the incident, admitting I could do nothing to retrieve the lost footage.

As with all issues, I communicated with the team and we were on alert if the alleged criminal returned. Approximately one month later when he did return, our reception staff called me immediately. I made a decision to allow him to stay with a view to informing Catherine so she was able to call the police or handle the situation in the way she felt best. I called Catherine and she thanked me for the information. We watched him the whole time he was here (not that he was on site for much time) and he checked out a few days later. During this time I heard nothing from Catherine or the police.

As I understand we are still innocent until proven guilty and as all reputable accommodation venue managers will confirm, it is illegal for us to warn others of criminal behaviour unless there is evidence to back it up. This was also confirmed by the police.

Even though Catherine was very upset with this incident and criticised my management procedures, she continued to drink in my bar.

I feel Catherine’s review is damning and unfair. The facts are true yet misleading and I am disappointed she has taken this view. I feel it is unreasonable to infer that I was of no help and that I showed a lack of care. In my business there is nothing more important to me than the safety, wellbeing and satisfaction of my guests; otherwise how else would my business survive?

Please be reminded that travellers share accommodation with total strangers. It is not just this alleged thief but anyone who could steal at any time. Travellers should never leave anything of worth unattended at any time wherever they are.

This hostel is the best that i have stayed in. I cannot fault it at all! clean, tidy, friendly staff and funky bar downstairs. When i checked into my room my bed was made up, towel for me to use and massive lockers in which there is a power point in each. Big kitchen in which there was free tea and coffee. It is a spacious and comfortable hostel even though i felt i was in a hotel. The next bit is the cost $19 a night, thats right $19 a night. so cheap! Why would you want to stay anywhere else? I didn't want to leave urban central. I read the other review here and they said it was a bit far from the centre, well only a 10 min walk then your in the centre. It is not lot really, is it? BOOK INTO HERE AND YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPPOINTED. :D   :)

As it is new, the facilities are all really clean and very nice. The reception area looks more like a hotel than a hostel. Kitchen is spacious and well equipped. Pretty decent bar as well. Bathrooms and rooms are all good. Only downside is that it's a bit far from the center of the city. ;)
