OK - But there is a MUCH BETTER hostel in the city

Allround OK experience. The location is good but doesn't appear to be in the finest neighbourhood. Stayed in outside room - ok but not very well heated. Staff did not seem all that approachable either. I'd recommend to walk 5 mins further to THE OLD COUNTRYHOUSE on Gloster Street where you'll get what you'd expect from a top rated hostel!

Having stayed in several Christchurch hostels, including Old Country House, Chester Street & Dorset House, I've found Vagabond to be the pick of the bunch:- cheap, lots of off-street parking, very clean & welcoming. In fact I so enjoyed it that I opted to work there for a few months this year and was on duty when Robert & Loretta (see below) arrived. Just to set the record straight, they told us that they would arrive at the hostel at 8 am. In the event they arrived over ELEVEN hours later (not 7) after 7pm. Meanwhile I had emailed them to find out where they were & called Christchurch Airport to see if any planes had been delayed (they hadn't). Also scores of desperate backpackers had been calling us for beds for that night and it is always frustrating to turn frantic people away when we very have empty beds booked by probable "no-shows". Moreover we are also reluctant to cash credit cards from bookings from non-arrivals; often they have very valid excuses why they could not come. So, after much agonising & 11 hours after Robert & Loretta said that they would arrive, I sold their room to another couple who were very very happy to get beds for that night. It was done with the very best of intentions. Fifteen minutes later Robert & Loretta arrived. After many phone calls I was able to book them what seemed to be the last beds in Christchurch for that night. I am very sorry that they weren't happy with their accommodation. After consultation with Vagabond's owner, we have now decided to honour all valid credit card bookings, even when, as in this case, it seems highly likely that the beds will remain empty at a time when so many backpackers are desperately looking for beds. We apologise to Robert & Loretta for what they feel to be shabby treatment. I acted in what I felt to be their interests and in the interests of the couple who were able to stay in their room that night. We still do not understand why Robert & Loretta chose not to tell us that they would be nearly 12 hours later than expected when they had several opportunities to do so. Chris

Can't be trusted

We reserved 3 beds at Vagabond Backpackers 6 weeks in advance of our visit and confirmed those reservations with a credit card. Due to a missed connection on one segment of our 36-hour travel to Christchurch, we arrived at Vagabond at 6:00 p.m. (7 hours late) only to discover that our confirmed, reserved beds had already been sold. We finally ended up in a musty garage 30 minutes away still having to pay the same NZ$20 that we had confirmed for Vagabond. If we had not shown up at all, the confirmed reservation would have enabled the owner to charge our credit card for the beds and he would not have been out any money. Makes me wonder if we had not shown up at all, would he have charged me for those empty beds anyway. I would not recommend this hostel as the owner is not particularly trustworthy.

Beware the private rooms

The private rooms are fine inside, but are detached from the main building, which has the only available toilet facilities at night. This means that you must walk across the courtyard, then use your key to open the door to the main building to get to the toilet, a true inconvenience on cold or rainy nights. It wasn't even raining or too cold when I was there, and it was still a nuisance waking up in the middle of the night and having to go...

Vagabond Backpackers is the place to stay in Christchurch! It's a very short walk from downtown, and is a small, quiet, friendly place. I stayed in June--the off-season, but the place was fully booked every night, which should tell you something. Everything in the hostel was in great shape and it looked like it had been recently renovated. The rooms and bathrooms were clean, the kitchen is quite large and well-equipped, and the fresh-baked bread in the morning is a real treat. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. A great place to stay!

I stayed here in November 2002 and can highly recommend it. The owners are wonderful and there's a very laid back feel to the place. I stayed in a four bed cabin in the back, and even though it was a bit cramped, it was quiet and clean. There's free freshly baked bread every morning (get up early or you'll miss out) and a cheap and fast internet connection. Free videos too! It's always full so make sure to book ahead.

I stayed here on Christmas a couple years ago and the owners were incredibly generous and friendly. The facilities themselves are alright - nothing extraordinary but adequate.
