I have stayed in Hostels all over Australia now and wake up kind of ruined the others for me. It was the first hostel i stayed in and that made me think all hostels would be of a similar quality. The simple fact is that not a single hostel lived up to this one. Not only the people i met eing awesome but the staff are actually smart and know what they are talking about - you do get this in some hostels but I found only from the owners. These guys at the travel desk can answer pretty much anyting (i tested this) and don't even try and sell you stuff. I am now back for the end of my trip and I can think of no better way than ending it here at Side Bar - I mean wake up.

I loved this hostel. It is right at the top of George street, and you can get the bus to all the main things for a couple of dollars. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes to walk to all the shops. Bit more to get to the harbour. Everything is very clean, and the staff are very friendly. The deco is funky, and each floor is a different country with things from that country painted on it. The TV room is bright and there are always lots of people there. It could just do with being a bit bigger. The same with the kitchen. Everything is clean, but it's always quite busy, so it's best to either eat earlier or later than you usually would. The bathrooms and dorms are clean and there is nothing to complain about. Comfy beds and your own locker to keep your valuables in. Underneath the hostel is a bar called Sidebar. On weekends it's really busy and the drinks are quite cheap. The only complaints about this hostel is the price. It's quite expensive, and also your key is a pain. You need it to use the lift, to get into your room and to get into the bathrooms. Not good if you get up in the middle of the night and forget it, as you can't get into the bathroom or back into your room. Other than that, it's a great hostel.

Wake up is definatly worth looking into. We stayed in a private room, wit a bathroom. Room and bathroom were cleaned perfectly. The room was big enough and had a nice view out over sydney. Wake up is very close to China town and central station, so if youre staying short term definatly invest in a travel pass. The kitchen (the one time i used it) was very clean and well equip. Staff were very helpful. Would recommend if you wanted a private room, or if you didnt mind being a tiny bit out of the very centre of town.

The ultimate part hostel! Side bar downstars is usually jammed every night and they have a different theme night every weekend. Drinks and food tokens are always given when you pay your rent. There is always something on in the bar, whether is acoustic Dan singing his heart out, Karaoke, bingo or whatever there is always something to keep you entertained. Its a great place for meeting people and as I found a great place to start off your travels. Start off here and enjoy it and you'll never look back! :D

Could have been a good stay if I'd been able to sleep at some point. I stayed in a 10-bed dorm (the others were too expensive) and that was a mistake: - they're on the first floor, next to the communal area (TV on 22 h/day, people playing football at 1am) - just above the bar, with music going on til 2 am. - the backpackers there are usually young, immature and very noisy: they come back at 3am, turn the lights on and talk as if it was day. It is also quite common to wake up and find a backpacker or 2 lying on the floor because they were too pissed to reach their bed! If you're looking for a quiet place, do not stay here or save money to stay in a smaller dorm.

A group of us stayed here our very first night in Australia. It was really nice, more like a hotel than a hostel really. There were a ton of floors that had different themes. But you had a keycard that you had to use to access everything--door, elevator, room, bathroom--that got pretty annoying. The room was VERY cramped. 8 bunk beds and thats about it. Nice internet area downstairs but kind of expensive. There is a cafe and bar attached, but I heard the bar was usually pretty dead. It's a great location, right across from the train station. Plus they've got a shuttle to the airport. So it's great if you're just getting here or leaving. But it's not very conductive to meeting people as it's more like a hotel and there's really no big social area. It's close to the market, chinatown, and not too far to the harbor. Not too many bars around though so if you go out you'll definitely need a cab back. All in all, it is SUPER SUPER nice, but more like a hotel and makes it hard to meet people.

This place is legendary! Great place if you want to shag! Clean, and has the best location. The trouble you will encounter is actually leaving the building. Friendships are easily made here. The staff is amazing! Despite its size, it has a home feel to it. The space screams sydney! Ask for room 703- the biggest room, with the most personal space. Wicked sunset views from this top floor. You can see the blue mountains!

Stayed at the Wake Up for a total of 5 nights and I would recommend it. We booked a twin room, and ended up with a double bed and single bed above in traditional bunk bed set up. It was 88 usd per night, and the only downside was the en-suites being booked - it was slightly expensive, but worth it. The walls are thin and you will hear people if they decide to be noisy, but this is generally not a problem as it quietens down after 12pm. The staff are all extremely helpful and as it is so large, there are all types of travellers here from the more mature (me) to the younger babes! There is a bar downstairs that provides entertainment and it is an excellent location for getting around Sydney.

I stayed in Wakeup over Xmas 2004 and into 2005 and had easily the time of my life here!! When i first went to OZ i was travelling alone and was a little worried about making friends but had no problem here as it was so easy to meet people and many of the people I met here i 've kept as friends even though I finished my travels about 6 months ago!! The Sidebar below is a great night out and convenienlty placed just below the hostel and speaking of being well placed, the hostel is right in the centre of Sydney next to the train and bus station so it's not a problem getting out and about. The internet is pretty expensive but just round the corner at Peterpans on George street it's only $1 so that's not really a problem!! On the whole i would defo recommend Wakeup to anyone visiting Sydney..... LOVIN THE PARTY!!!!

The location of this hostel is good-no pick up but it's only a couple of minutes walk from central station. We stayed in a double which was really clean, the kitchen facilities were a tad small for the size of the hostel but we didn't use it as there are so many places to eat in Sydney, the bathrooms were nice and big and cleaned daily and the common areas were ok too. I would definately stay here again.

I've stayed in many hostels over the last five years, Wake Up is an excellent example of how a city hostel should be.It doesn't feel as important in the country or at the beach but being in the heart of a busy city, you can feel quite vulnerable at times, not just in Sydney but most major cities where crime unfortunately happens! security of this hostel is definately the best i've come across! I noticed people have complained about the key card system, yep it can be a pain but believe me from experience, better to have a minor annoyance from key cards than be robbed or attacked! It was clean, (do need bigger bins in the dorms) all the staff were real friendly and helpfull, (great cleaning staff ) It's got a fun bar in the basement, great for meeting other travellers, and a great starting place for sydney whether you're heading on elsewhere or staying to look for a job and maybe more long term accomodation like i did, i was in Sydney for 6 months working and travelling, and wake up and it's bar were a great staying and socialising place to have, cheers to Wake Up!

I stayed at Wake Up for 2 nites.Very very disappointed. First, no one clear up the rubbish bin in the room though the rubbish bin has no more room to accomodate rubbish!Second, the toilet/bathroom are dirty and smelly. I saw some tissues, rubbish on the floor in the very early morning, however when I got back in late night they are still there!! It is unacceptable. Third, you have to use your keycard even go to toliet,lift...It's painful!!It's not worth to pay such amount of money to obtain this sort of service!

RIP OFF BEWARE OF THE BED BUGS!!!

I had heard so many good things about this hostel, but don't beleive any of them. The toilets were filthy, there was vomit in the hallways, the staff were unfriendly. I reported that 3 people in my room were bitten by bugs, and one girl had to stay in hospital for 3 days, the staff laughed and said that it happens everywhere, and that they had 3 floors already infected. I wanted to see my friends on other floors but my card swipe wouldn't work, this could be very dangerous in an emergency. Opposite the hostel street bums live and harass you at night time for money and smokes. This is not a good place for a single girl to stay in, or for anyone else that wants a nice hostel.

This hostel has good and bad points. The rooms have high ceilings and new carpet and the hallways are nice, but it is a huge impersonal place and you have to have a security card to go EVERYWHERE which is kind of a pain! Going to the tiolet in the middle of the night can be a real pain because you need to swipe your card to get into the bathroom and they almost never work on the first or second try! The thing that bugged me the most was that our room was poorly lit. There was one overhead light with about a 20 watt bulb and you could barely see your hand in front of your face much less find anything in your bag and definitely could not read in bed!

Wake up! is in an excellent location. you can walk to the major attractions. It is relatively clean. In all fairness i have seen the staff clean up the place so i guess its the guest that mess up the place. The female toilet have been filthy few times over the week i was there. The lady at the travel desk is super unfriendly. Other than that this is an ok place to stay in. Quite expensive. There are plenty other backpackers in the vacinity. So you have lots of choices.

I really liked this place - its very clean, modern and in a great location (just across the road from central station and within walking distance of darling harbour, the rocks, the opera house, harbour bridge etc. etc.). The rooms are modern, bright, airy and clean. The communal bathrooms are lovely and were always spotlessly clean when I was there. The Side Bar in the basement is nice and does some great meal deals and happy hours (champagne for $3 - my kind of place!). My only complaint would be the swipe card system - we had friends staying on a different floor and we couldn't get up there to see them so we had to keep leaving each other messages at reception!

Ok but not great, no freezers in kitchen

The kitchen has no freezers! Only large refrigerators! This is a huge drawback in my opinion. I stayed in a twin room with ensuite. The room had bunk beds and foam matttresses. The room had a TV mounted high on the wall so the only good location to watch TV without craning your neck was from the top bunk. The third day I stayed there were bugs infesting the bathroom. We notified the staff and housekeeping "took care of it" but the bugs were back the next night. Overall this place was ok but not great and not a good value for the price. The key card access to floors is true except if you are on the first floor, then everybody has access to your floor! because the kitchen is on the first floor. Unlike other hostels which make you pay in advance for all nights and do not allow refunds, wake up lets you pay as you go, paying for each night in the morning, though there are no refunds.

The wakeup's location is impressive - opposite central station so using the trains to the airport is extremely easy. A half hour walk up George street will put you in the rocks near the bridge and the opera house, although there is a decent sized bus station as well as the trains if you're too lazy. With regard to the hostel - security as already mentioned is impressive to the point of being almost anal, and the rooms are clean. It ought to be obvious, but you need to book ahead for peak periods such as Mardi Gras and the whole Xmas/NYE period. Don't walk in on NYE looking for a room like I saw two German girls doing, that's plain stupid. Rapid fire good points:- Has an ATM, good bar downstairs with sensible prices, good location, good travel desk, cafe tacked onto the end of it with good tasting coffee - weirdest though good tasting fry up breakies ever - lettuce should not feature in a fry up breakie! Negative points:- It's a bit expensive, it's definately too large for long term stayers (510 beds), if you're there at Xmas we got fully ripped off by their Xmas lunch - don't do it, wasn't anywhere near worth it - their (expensive) internet access computers don't let you open multiple windows - v annoying. Kitchen way too small, chill out area needs sofas. Would stay in it again for up to a week, but definately no longer than that.

I stayed here for a week when I first arrived in Sydney. It's not cheap, but it's in an ideal location to explore, plus it's clean & shiny & new & modern & funky! The dorms are spaceous, with lockers & a big mirror, & are cleaned regularly. There's a bar downstairs which also does good priced meals, the guy at the tour desk is very helpful, & there's always someone at reception. On the minus side... the communal areas are tiny compared to the amount of beds they have & it's quite hard to meet people coz it's sooooo huge!! :-(
