lovely & clean, very central

This is a great YHA hostel, just over the road from Cairn's Central. Best of all it is quiet with real travelers passing through. Set around a central courtyard, there is a great pool with a jacusi, a large (and very clean) kitchen at the far end, and some (very expensive!) internet computer. The Global Gossip cafe down the road is much cheaper. Rooms are OK, if sparten, but at least all come with aircon. The place is open until 11pm - after than point you need you card to get in through the front door (and there aren't any staff around if it doesn't work). There is no bar, but at reception you can get vouchers for a $10 meal in the Woolshed (which seems to be the backpackers central bar). My only real complaint is that the reception staff were pretty unhelpful both in booking tours (they read the brochure infront of me, and then told me what it said, rather than going on their own experience!) AND in sorting out the problems I had with my door card which continually failled.

Dull but clean and well-maintained hostel

Cons
No atmosphere, seems to attract snorers, expensive
Pros
Clean, well-maintained, decent location

The hostel was good as far as cleanliness and facilities go, but it was lacking in atmosphere and seemed to have attracted some of the competitors for the World Snoring Championships. It was also by no means the cheapest hostel in Cairns. I would stay here again but the nightlife in Cairns is so excellent that you're bound to have a good time there regardless of which hostel you stay in.

Bad customer service, bugs and insults.

Looks good, but scratch the surface and it's pretty poor. I arrived tired and wanting to go to bed, but there are always long, chaotic reception queues with people pushing in. I had to wait ages to check-in. The motel-style design means sound travels, so you go to sleep when everyone else has and wake up when the first person gets up. I was bitten during the night (4 bites in a row), but because the receptionist couldn't find a bug in my bed she refused to do anything. She said I was hardly covered in bites, (I don't know how many bites she expects me to endure before she does something). I had to ask for her to change my linen. She would not refund the following night's stay because they cannot do it "just because someone believes they have bed bugs", so I had to stay or lose my money and pay again for a room elsewhere. She insisted they weren't bed bugs and just mozzies or something, but when I asked for bug spray, she said that wouldn't kill bed bugs thereby contradicting herself. So I felt really insulted and I had paid for this!! We were cold at night too. There are no lifts so you have to lug everything upstairs. I imagine disabled access would be a problem. The kitchens are better than most and the pool and bathrooms ok too, but I would not recommend this place to anyone. They also charge for luggage storage. They do not deserve 4*! :(

We stayed here in October 2003 and found the double room really great. The kitchen was great and everything looked new. Most importantly was the staff in the reception. They were friendly, helpfull and very professional. One of our best hostel stays.

I was very pleased with this YHA. Security is great and they have a travel center in the reception area. The kitchen is big and clean, the beds comfy, a great tv room and right across the street from a huge mall. I wished the pool to be a bit bigger and the location is a bit removed from the action, but the upside is that its a quieter hostel. A varied age-range here from backpackers, families and senior couples.

Relaxing, and absolutely brilliant with new extensions

I have been staying at this hostel quite regularly in the last 6 years, and I must say my stay here last weekend (13/9/03) was certainly the best. The extensions have made this hostel absolutely beautiful. It has a new pool/spa, games gazebo, internet access and the TV room is no ordinary TV room. It is a fully set up mini cinema with a huge plasma screen tv and speakers all around the LARGE room. It also has brand new lounges. Security is perfect. Each room is now accessible by swipe card technology with a central computer logging every time each card has entered a room. So I`m assuming if something goes missing at a certain time, it can be traced as to who entered the room at that time. Cairns Central YHA is and always will be a very relaxed place. I have had some gorgeous afternoons, sitting by the pool, with beer and prawns...mmmmm I can taste them now. Honestly, after the renovations and extensions, this hostel has risen the level all other hostels should follow. Must be seen to be believed. You won`t be disappointed.

I stayed in one of the double a/c rooms for 3 nights. The kitchen was clean and well appointed. TV lounge comfortable. Staff friendly and helpful esp Damien. The only winge I have is that the swimming pool has been dug out for reconstruction. They should have warned me of this major construction job when I first rang up to book. Otherwise it is very handily position near the Cairns Central Shopping centre and good pubs. Drunken indigenous folk can be a bit of a problem.

Tiny double rooms

The hostel has all the facilities you need and the TV room has nice comfy couches. The shopping centre just across the road is quite handy. On the downside, the double rooms are just big enough to fit in the bed and a chair and the grey painted cinder blocks had me drawing a comparison to a prison cell. The louvred windows let in all the noise from outside which included plenty of traffic noise and a garbage truck at about 4am.

A clean, comfy, motel like hostel

Dorms have small numbers, and have good security, and they all face in towards the lovely pool. The kitchen is clean and has plenty of space for your food, especially fridges. It's close to the train and the big shopping mall, but not much else, although it's only a short walk to the Esplanade. They have a luggage room if you want to leave things while going up to the Daintree.
