The Yellow Sub is simply the best hostel ever! As soon as you enter through the green door you feel welcome, at home and among friends. You get to know everyone very fast. If you have questions Judy, Santosh and Tanja are more than welcome to help you... I spend Christmas and New Years Eve there and I wasn't homesick once! After about 3 months I'm finally leaving the Yellow Sub to go on travelling. But let me tell you - there have been so many people that simply got stuck there for far longer than they'd planned because you just feel so comfortable there and don't want to leave... The rooms are nice, facilities good, pool table and pool entertaining and the help for finding work is great!!! I've met so many nice people there and had such a great time... If you want to experience the same - go to the Yellow Sub!!!!

For a few months I drove all the way around Australia. I stayed in dozens of hostels. Out of all these hostels (and I have within the last few seconds decided that I will, within this statement, include all the hostels I have stayed in throughout my travels around the world over many years) the Yellow Submarine was the best. There is something magic here; something that you will remember forever. Stay more than a few days.

As you walk along Quay Street in Brisbane, you will pass the usual selection of YHAs and Let's-pack-em-in-til-they-can't-breath-but-can-still-pay types of hostel. Whence you happen upon The Yellow Sub, you truly submerge yourself into its sub-topical garden environs and release yourself to the community of long-stay workers and envied holidaymakers, who, for whatever reason, have chosen this special little hostel to rest their heads a while. If you're there at the right time of day you will get to meet Judy, the matriarchal owner who props herself up at the helm. Judy likes to get to know you. Especially if you plan on staying a while. That's one of the first things you'll notice about The Sub, they like to know everyone who is staying there, after all, this is a home away from home. I immediately liked it here. When I mentioned I was looking for work, within hours I was proudly toddling off to my new job as a market researcher. I was slightly deflated to learn from my fellow guests later on that night over a very generous glass of box wine that I was not unusually talented. If they say they'll find you work, they will. The Sub has been open for many years and thrives on it's work contacts. Employers know and trust them. And best of all, this job club is free. The facilities are pretty basic, but clean and well-maintained. And I have to admit, to have a swimming pool in the middle of the city is absolute luxury. You have a choice of large dorms (the largest being a 9-bed), or small four-bed dorms to choose from. Twins and doubles are also available and you can work for free rent if an envied position arises. When I was there, the manager in Judy's absence was a dapper, smiling Indian man by the name of Santosh. It was he who all but took me by the hand, and gave me the grand tour, stopping occasionally to introduce me to some of the long-term stayers who were lolling by the swimming pool or whiling away the afternoon at the pool table. I was amazed that four hours later, Santosh not only remembered my name but asked me how work went. When you are used to getting lost in the cattle marts that are The Palace Backpackers or somewhere like City Backpackers, this was truly refreshing. Mosqutoes and the odd possum sighting aside, The Sub seems to provide a haven for both workers and overnight guests in the middle of Brisbane. I wish them all the best and hope that one day Judy & co decide to spread their wings further than Brisbane.

I spent 2 months in 2001 in the Yellow Sub and still now reading the reviews makes me feel home sick to this unique hostel. I met so many awesome people there, we had so much fun..it was great! It' s a hostel for everybody who wants to stay a longer time at one place where it never gets boring.

Unfortunately I paid for 2 nights before I actually saw the place in all its' glory, and I looked on longingly at the YHA up the road. Yes, the staff are friendly, but it's dirty, the tables are sticky, the tables are at an angle so it's difficult to eat your food, and there is peeling paint everywhere. I've travelled up the west and east coast and this is the only backpackers that I can honestly say I hated. Sorry guys, but this place is rank!

I stayed in the Y.S. for 8 wks or more and worked there. The place is extremely clean (I know how obsessive Judy is about it). The building is over 100 yrs old and has loads of character. It's totally different to the clinical and impersonal feel of the larger hostels. The pool is great (and cleaned every day - not one of my favourite jobs but good for getting out into the sun), it's a nice way to chill out and cool down. The possums that come out at night are great, but they won't come near you or your room unless you have left food around. The communal areas are set in a garden, and the trees and vines make you feel more secluded and relaxed. You wouldn't know that you were in the city apart from the rail track nearby. You get used to this and a certain level of noise is to be expected from a city centre hostel. The free barbeque/pizza/whatever once a week is also a bonus, as well as the opportunity for free sailing in Manly on a Wednesday. Loads of effort is made to get people work, although most of the time people ask for guys. There is a lot of marketing or sales work. I made so many friends here and really enjoyed my stay.

I don't know how this place ever got 4 stars. Its horrible. We stayed in a tiny double room that had stained sheets and a hole in the wall that had been covered over with tape! The communal areas are bad too - the tv room is a corrugated iron shack and the showers/toilets lack any privacy. We stayed one night and got straight out of there. Even the tourist acommodation booking service at the transit centre told us they do not book people in at this hostel - ask yourself why!

I found the staff to be very friendly and fairly helpful, but I had real problems with the owner. I called and asked if there was parking nearby and he said in the front. I parked there and got a ticket. The owner mentioned that I should have known that the entire city had a 2 hour parking policy unless specifically posted. When I mentioned what he told me yesterday that he should assume that if an overnight guest asks about parking, you can safely assume he means overnight. I told him that I wasn't asking him to pay the ticket rather that he make sure to let people know in advance in the future. He practically started to yell at me saying, "You want to travel the world and when you get in the big city you want someone to hold your hand and....." It went on until I walked away. I have never been treated like that before at any hostel and will never put up with that. I had met some other people in the following weeks who had similar experiences. The staff (backpackers) were reasonably nice and the building itself is ok (nothing special, just ok), but I can't forget the treatment at the hands of the owner.

I stayed in the Yellow Sub twice during my year in Oz, it was the first place I stayed and the last before I flew home. I couldn't have asked to stay in a hostel with a better bunch of people. Everyone was super friendly, Judy and Ken were great and Tess was the best!! This is the sort of hostel where you feel welcome the minute you walk in the door. Its not too big so avoids that "anonymous" feeling that you find in places like The Palace. Very handy for town and the transit centre and also for the Fiddler's Elbow across the road. I met some great people here, most of who I'm still in contact with and we had some hard core punch nights! My names up there on the wall near the kitchen along with hundreds of other happy backpackers! This place rocks!!

I stayed in this hostel for a number of weeks - mainly because I was broke, and working to save money to travel further north. Admittedly I simply didn't like Brisbane. I thought it was a dull and unfriendly city. I heard great reviews of Yellow Submarine, and looked forward to seeing some much-needed friendly faces. The staff were ok - not overly-so, though - and the atmosphere in general was very cliquey and elitist. It's a long-stay hostel, and arriving on my own, I found it a bit frosty. In my time there, a gay couple left because of continuous and openly hostile comments, and one girl (a nurse) physically attacked another girl for interrupting a TV programme! In addition, the place is just grotty - very higgeldy-piggeldy and rundown. I cleaned rooms for a couple of weeks in the morning, and was amazed at the state of the place - especially downstairs. It was crumbling, damp and smelly. The facilities aren't great - the shower area is small and exposed, with nothing but flimsy curtains for cover. And the television 'room' is a tin-roof with no walls! I was amazed at the reputation this place has. It seems to think of itself as very cool, and that that's more important than actually providing facilities or a safe, comfortable place to stay. I stayed in lots and lots of hostels during my time in Oz, and most were very friendly, if a little haphazard. I never prioritised swank over a fun time, but in they Yellow Submarine, you get neither!

I stayed there for 3 months 1998. became firm friends with Kath & Jim (see earlier review) and eagerley await their birth of their first child. Another success story is Claire & Tim who met there & get married Jan 04. Five years on I still see on a regular basis all the friends I made there. I cleaned the rooms for about two months too and there was never a dull moment! Thanks Judy & Ken for a great atmosphere which created so many great and enduring friendships.

its always said that the people make the difference to the hostel you are staying in and this place really emphasises that. i have travelled for 6 mnths now in oz and this is the first city hostel to have had such a friendly and warm atmosphere. great fun, great people, great atmosphere and great staff. there really is a effort made by everyone to get involved and include everyone, noone is left out and all are guaranteed a great time. come for one or two nights you'll end up staying at least a week - you gotta love it!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was really disappointed by this place especially after reading the reviews. I found the atmosphere to be pretty cold and the both staff and the other guests were slightly snobby and elitist, for no good reason. Also I don't expect grand luxury or privacy when staying in a hostel, but I wouldn't mind a bit more than just a flimsy curtain between me and the main TV area when I'm taking a shower. Security was a joke, they may as well have just put a sign up saying no burgalars please. The place was clean, but that's all I can really say about it.

No doubt we will take him/her back to see where it all began .... In room 24... known as the honeymoon suite. Ken and Judy will always have a special place in our hearts and of course Tess ... lots of love Kathy and Jim

I briefly visited Yellow Sub on my way up the coast and I am so sorry that I could not stay a bit longer! All the staff were so nice and the hostel itself is so homey and comfortable! I would recommend this hostel to anyone who is looking to get away from the whole lager-lad scene, but who still wants to have some FUN!
