YHA NSW operates its compact 48 bed Thredbo hostel year round: which is great if you love real (& enhanced) snow (winter hostel beds are so popular they are allocated by advance ballot) or the wonderful summer hiking: eg Kosciuszko summit with, or without, cheating via the chair lift. The hostel is half way up the slope facing the ski field: parking is strictly drop off: then park 500 m away, don't forget your National Parks pass. There are many dining options, or cook your own at the YHA. The best food shop is IGA Jindabyne next to the National Parks Info centre. Thredbo is about 1700m above sea level so you get sun fried faster, take care. The hostel stairs and access paths are steep but the comfy lounge with its great alpine view compensates. The dorms are neat but basic. There are 4 great self guided walks brochures of the village heritage and ecology. If you are fit and mobile and love the outdoors, this hostel is highly recommended.

This award winning renovated hostel is well worth your time to train it up from Sydney. An easy 2 hour ride through the scenic Blue Mountains the hostel is located about 1km down hill from the station. It started life as a guest house in the 1930's & has been renovated by YHA to a high standard. You can even lounge in the former ball room. It gets foggy & wet some times but the central heating makes up for it and the area is full of cafes with good coffee. Don't forget to try out the local eco walks or if you are less fit check out the Sky rider and the cable car rides down to the board walk on the valley floor. The hostel has all the mod cons & a good mix of local & international guests. It has good security features & a large share kitchen. It's a couple of km walk from the 3 Sisters. If you like art house movies look up the Mt Vic flicks 20 mins further up the train line.

Okay if you need a cheap bed

This is a YHA franchise & in quiet times the hostel is rooms in the heritage hotel Bompas. The hotel is legendary for its summer fun and scenic location close to fishing spots for the wonderful southern rock lobster but the hostel rooms are only just okay. There were no kitchen or lounge facilities, fridge etc. The bathrooms lacked adequate lighting and required maintenance: shower curtains coming off the wall and so on. I was disappointed and won't be back, which is a pity as I enjoy walking the great old jetty which is one of the longest in SA. If you are travelling in a group & just want a cheap bed & a fun night's drinking this would be a good choice, but not if your hostel standards are medium to high.
