Laid back, but a bit basic

Basically this place is out of the city and quiet in that respect. It's about 10 to 15 minutes' walk from Southbank train station which is only a few stops from the city, that's if you can't get a lift with the free shuttle. There's a nice hot food shop at the end of the street, and you're also close to shops at West End. The TV area was pretty good also. Unfortunately this place has no air conditioning and is VERY hot in summer (I stayed there last January for a weekend and it was hard to sleep), it can be noisy at times, people smoke all over the place even though there are no smoking signs, and there seemed to be people living long term in my dorm who left the door unlocked and wide open even after I closed it and also left their bags and clothes and plates everywhere. The ensuite was also very basic, and the ensuite door didn't have a lock. Reception staff also showed no sympathy after one of the long term people in my dorm took my door key which was sitting next to my clothes (probably after losing theirs), and I got charged a $10 lost key fee. I won't be staying there again. I've stayed at Banana Bender near Roma St, Bunk in the Valley, and Palace Embassy in the city, and this hostel was the worst of the lot.

Satisfying but nothing special, mainly just a place to sleep

I stayed here for 4 nights and while this wasn´t the perfect hostel I was satisfied with it. I would come here again if I had to. Pros: Great location on 34th St & 8th Ave being close to a subway and Penn Station, close to Empire State Building and fast food places with a convenience store on the corner, TVs and ensuite in every room, free breakfast (just a bagel and muffin and banana and coffee and juice though), quiet away from most street noise, warm inside rooms, fairly helpful staff with answering questions. Cons: $4 a day for locker storage even after checkout, small rooms with 6-share much better than 4-share (although there´s no space in NYC for anything), showers were cramped and sometimes hard to get the temperature right, internet was a bit expensive with the nearest net cafe at Times Square on 42nd St, nowhere to socialise with other people apart from the small kitchen and your own room, fairly expensive rates but I think this is common for New York City.

This hostel is basically an old house converted into dorm rooms. It has a great atmosphere. The staff were nice, it was very close to the train (20 mins from city centre), hot food places and a liquor store were nearby, the internet was FREE with no bookings, large kitchen, big table to sit around and chat and socialise, nice lounge/TV area, and US$22 was cheap even though it was cash only. I didn´t use it but there was even a backyard with a hammock! I´d definitely stay there again if I had to go back to DC.
