Nice Rooms - Unorganised Staff

We stayed in Koalas in June 2006. We had booked two dorm beds through Peter-pans, but requested an upgrade to a double room. We got this for free, but I think that was more to do with the staff being un-organised rather than any generosity on their part. The double room was very big, with own little kitchen area and en-suite bathroom. The decor was mid 70`s and the bed was probably from the same era, only just off the floor. Apart from that, it was clean. We asked if we could have late checkout and the evening staff said that was fine. However the next morning we were scolded by the most rude and hostile member of staff I`ve come across in a hostel. WHY WERE WE LATE!! WHO HAD GIVEN US PERMISSION TO DO THAT!! etc etc.. This despite there being a sign up saying late checkout $5, which we would have been happy to pay. The bag store is large, and only opened on the hour, although that rule goes out of the window when its busy, so you can expect to be waiting 1/2 hr to pick up your bag during the morning check-in. Also, when they say don`t leave food in your bags, they mean it. The store is full of rats that will shred through your new Karrimore if they smell food - even sealed packet soups. Overall, bearable, but there has to be better places to stay.

I was a bit apprehensive of staying here after reading the other reviews, but it looks like the Bohemia resort are listening (and more importantly acting). We arrived on the overnight Greyhound, and were picked up from the station. The pickup was 15 mins late, but that wasn`t bad considering it was about 6:30am. We had been told that check-in wasn`t till 2pm, but the staff were nice, and managed to get us a double room straight off. (I think we were lucky it wasn`t full). The room was very impressive, large double bed, big clean bathroom, TV and air-con. The tiled floor did get a bit slippy after a shower, but there was no mould like we had feared. The hourly bus takes you to the centre of town, but its often full. The walk is about 30 mins, along streets with no pavements (what is it about Cairns!!) Overall, I was glad to stay there, certainly a step up from the horrors of Koalas!!

We stayed there in June 2006, and loved it. The hostel is right next to the main bus station, great for catching the greyhounds, or getting dropped off. Although its a bit of a steep hill to get up to the hostel, its worth it. The hostel is an amazing old building, with a number of extentions for extra bedrooms, conference facilities etc. The staff (like most YHA`s) were lovely. They booked us in without any fuss and helped with things like change for the phones etc etc. The room was small, but clean and well maintained. The beds were fine, but a bit squeaky!! It was raining while we were there, so we ate at the hostel.. Great food, and cheaper than anything you are going to get in Noosa. We went canoeing for a few days and it was fine to leave our bags. The staff even arranged for us to go surfing at late notice. All in all, very impressed by the hostel. Its just what you expect from a YHA!
