I returned for 5 days this November 2005 having stayed for a few days last year. A well dimensioned/designed hostel with good communal areas - a well maintained & clean kitchen. Staff are through & helpful & it all provides an good atmosphere. All carpets were being replaced whilst I was there showing a refreshing investment. Location is such that bars, shops, beach & transit centre are all a short walk away. Stayed again for 6 days in November 2006. Now known simply as the Byron Bay YHA rather than J's Bay. It is still a good uncrowded hostel with excellent facilities. Fitting some small security lockers would be a good addition. Updated 2009 -- Stayed again in December 2007 & February 2009 - rooms now have security lockers .... decking area next to kitchen has been enlarged and an improved DVD/TV lounge in the old games room. Still well maintained ... little things light bulbs being replaced, medium things inefficient fans being upgraded and big things ... bathroom plumbing being maintained were all being addressed whilst I stayed there.

First let me say I would be happy to return to this hostel. It is close to the Metro and the MontMartre area is a very pleasant stroll away. So it is a good base for a tourist wanting to see Paris. The day time lock out policy restricts you to using the common areas between 11am & 4pm - but then you would be out exploring the city at that time. I sensed the rooms are of varying size and standard - mine was a 4 share with a bathroom - although there are larger dorms without private facilities. Nice touches are the included breakfast and the 30 minute internet usage given on booking in. It is a interesting buiding built onto the side of the hill - the wooden starcases are narrow and can be noisy - as was some of the plumbing. It was being decorated whilst I was there (end May 07). The breakfast room can be cramped at peak times. The area for self catering is small and basic -- fridge / microwave. Reception staff were friendly.... it always helps if you are friendly and greet them as well. Security well I was happy enough - Ok you don't have lockers available - but the rooms are lockable and they only let out 1 key per room - access to the hostel is via the front and the reception desk seemed to be always manned by responsible people. The surrounding neighbourhood is well maintained and appeared very safe. Overall a well run hostel.

It is a good base for touring Lands End , St Ives , Mousehole etc. there is a very limited but welcoming bus service direct too & from the hostel with Sunset buses. If you are arriving by train/coach there is a bus from Stand A at the Penzance station at approx 6pm - very useful if you have a large pack. Other buses leave hostel in mornings for St Ives & Lands End. Good self catering kitchen and wholesome good quality meals available to buy if you don't fancy cooking yourself. Good grounds which also accomodate tent camping in summer. Hostel is up a hill although if you want to break your journey there is the Pirate pub at the bottom.
